What is this?

This comprehensive 3-hour experience covers the highlights and hidden gems of Valparaíso, laying bare the port city's fascinating history. Predominantly delivered as a walking tour, the experience also includes rides on the emblematic trolley bus and funiculars.* The route explores the architectural and cultural legacy left by 19th-century immigration on the hills of Alegre and Concepción—the heart and soul of Valparaíso. You will also learn how the historic Barrio Puerto (port neighborhood) maintains its traditions, visit a historic market currently undergoing major renovation, and take in panoramic views of the seaport from Cerro Cordillera. Come and discover why Valparaíso was recognized as a World Heritage Site, and get to know the modern face of Chile's Capital of Culture. *Public transportation is subject to availability on the day. You will travel on the El Peral, Concepción, or Reina Victoria funicular. The trolley bus may be substituted with a local "micro" bus.

What makes this unique?

This experience offers the ultimate education on Chile's beguiling city. Before the construction of the Panama Canal, Valparaíso was the most important port in South America, and it remains the headquarters of the Chilean Navy. Built on 42 hills connected by funiculars and terraced promenades forming a natural amphitheater, the "Jewel of the Pacific" has survived earthquakes, served as a living canvas for artists, and become a meeting point for free spirits. It's as easy to get lost in this labyrinthine seaport as it is to stumble over the facts. Let your guide untangle the strands of history and share untold tales of this charismatic urban center. You will have the opportunity to capture everyday life and venture down quiet streets rarely trodden by foreign visitors. Accompanied by a local Porteño who knows every inch of the city, you’ll chew over everything from the advent of street art under Neruda to where to find the best empanadas—with a tasting included.
