What is this?

Hosted by an architect, this full-day excursion analyzes Santiago’s preserved pre-colonial grid and the strategic placement of a city within a natural basin. You'll see the cathedral, Plaza de Armas, and a network of covered pedestrian galleries cutting through the city blocks, while discussing the eclecticism of the historic downtown. The itinerary continues at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (built in 1972 and renovated in 2009 after a national competition), Santa Lucía Hill (the founding site of colonial Santiago), the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (designed by Smiljan Radic), and La Moneda Cultural Center. Diego will guide you around the barrios of Lastarria—a cultural hub—and the historic Yungay. These historic points of interest are juxtaposed with the renowned Alejandro Aravena's UC Innovation Center. Together, you'll observe how different architectural periods coexist—identify layers of transformation in public spaces from a contemporary architectural perspective.

What makes this unique?

Come and see the key attractions of Santiago through the lens of an architect. Santiago occupies a unique geographical position in a natural basin formed by the Andes Mountains to the east and the Chilean Coastal Range to the west. As an architect, Diego shares a comprehensive reading of Santiago’s historic center through an architectural and cultural lens. Beyond visiting iconic sites, the tour reveals how the city’s colonial grid, public spaces, and civic buildings have evolved over nearly five centuries, exposing the layers of urban transformation that define Chile’s capital today. By connecting heritage landmarks with contemporary works—such as the Pre-Columbian Arts Museum by Smiljan Radic and the UC Innovation Center by Alejandro Aravena—you gain a situated understanding of how Chilean architecture negotiates between history and modernity. The result is an engaging exploration of how culture, memory, and design coexist in shaping the identity of Santiago’s urban core.
