Mexico

Día de Muertos is a celebration of memory, artistry, and belonging. Offered daily from October 29 to November 2, the experience traces the festival’s rhythm from creation to commemoration: from flowers and food, to processions and light.

You’ll begin in the market, where marigold and pan de muerto fill the air with color and scent. Paco guides your eye to texture and detail—petals in sunlight, powdered sugar on hands, vendors arranging altars of fruit and candles.

Next, visit a local home to see and photograph an ofrenda being built. Families arrange photos, bread, mezcal, and candles. You’re welcomed to respectfully capture gestures of care, memory and love—and may even place a few elements yourself.

After lunch, Paco arranges a short face-painting or mask-making session with a local artist. Then, you join one or two calendas (comparsas): joyful street processions of music and masks. Paco helps you move with the rhythm, framing the motion of dancers and the intimacy of onlookers.

This experience focuses on the making and meaning of Día de Muertos. Paco’s approach is personal—he guides you like a friend with a camera, not a tour guide.

You see a full day of traditions: market in morning light, the concentration of altar-building, the late-day crescendo of music and color. Paco teaches you to read light, to ask permission before photographing, to sense when to shoot and when to simply be present.

This tour emphasizes what Día de Muertos feels like—the scent of copal, the warmth of shared work, the joy that sits comfortably beside remembrance. In this first stop, Paco leads you through the market. You photograph flower sellers, fruit vendors, and families buying offerings. You’ll learn to frame texture and rhythm — petals in baskets, powdered sugar on hands, the soft smoke of copal rising. The market is more than supply; it’s the pulse of the celebration.

Rather than rush through, Paco helps you slow down — reading light, finding human gestures, and engaging respectfully with local vendors. You begin to understand how the altar, the food, and the flower are all forms of remembrance — each color and scent carrying meaning.

Choose your expression — a traditional face-painting session with a local artist or the chance to craft and wear a hand-painted mask, both rooted in local imagery and symbolism. You’ll need to send your choice in advance to Paco at the time of booking so he can arrange a local artist accordingly. Keep in mind – slots fill up quickly.

After lunch, Paco arranges a 30-minute session led by local artists. You may opt for subtle, symbolic face painting inspired by La Catrina and local floral motifs, or for a handmade mask that draws from Oaxacan papel maché and folk imagery. Both are created with cultural context, genuine local artists, real connection.

These sessions honor tradition. The artist explains the symbolism — how the calavera celebrates continuity, not death. The designs are personal, thoughtful, and made to be part of the calenda, not to dominate it.

Rather than a conventional tour guide, Paco acts as a visual experience curator, guiding travelers to meaningful moments and the best photographic settings across Oaxaca’s markets, homes, and festivities.

Paco’s work spans professional photography and cinematic video — including weddings, cultural productions, and collaborations with local artists — and he frequently documents major events like Guelaguetza and Día de Muertos. Held on the third weekend of May every year (May 15-17 in 2026) at Asakusa Shrine, the festival takes over the neighborhood for three full days of parades, music, dancing and ritual. At the center are the mikoshi — portable shrines carried on the shoulders of teams of bearers, who shout and sway as they move through narrow streets.

You’ll be drawn to the raw energy of the crowds, the emotion on the faces of the mikoshi bearers, and the visual richness of the traditional wear — from happi coats to tabi socks. The festival offers a sense of controlled chaos that makes for powerful street photography and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture in motion.

This workshop immerses you in the action with an expert photographer by your side to help you capture key moments during the event. Each Mikoshi — portable shrines carried by locals — is paraded through the narrow streets of Asakusa and around the historic Senso-ji Temple district, an area rich in tradition and culture.

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. Modernisme in Barcelona

5 days in Barcelona for design, culture, local markets, museums, tapas, and Gaudí’s best landmarks.

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

The Bonneville Salt Flats are not to be missed! A slight detour off I-80 near the UT/NV is a moon-like alternate universe not to be missed. Go for a quick run through the salt flats or just stop for a quick photo op or picnic!

Avanos Town

This is a Gothic-Renaissance palace that once served as the seat of the Rector of the Republic of Ragusa. Today, it houses a museum displaying artifacts from Dubrovnik's history​​. Originally erected in the 15th century, this historical edifice has weathered disasters including explosions, fires, and earthquakes, notably being rebuilt after significant damages in 1435, 1463, and the devastating 1667 earthquake. 1: Governance Core. Get into the heart of Dubrovnik's historical governance by exploring the Rector's office, administrative and council halls, and the courtroom. These spaces, preserved with their original grandeur, offer insights into the administrative mechanisms of the Dubrovnik Republic.

Portugal produces over 50% of the world’s cork, used for everything from wine stoppers to sustainable fashion. These forests not only support rural communities but also provide a crucial habitat for wildlife, including the endangered Iberian lynx. Cork Oak Forests

Shibuya Crossing, or Shibuya Scramble Crossing, is a popular scramble crossing in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.[1] It is located in front of the Shibuya Station Hachikō exit and stops vehicles in all directions to allow pedestrians to inundate the entire intersection. The statue of Hachikō, between the station and the intersection, is a common meeting place and almost always crowded.

Three large TV screens mounted on nearby buildings overlook the crossing, as well as many advertising signs. The Starbucks store overlooking the crossing is also one of the busiest in the world. Its heavy traffic and inundation of advertising have led to it being compared to the Times Square intersection in New York City and Piccadilly Circus intersection in London.
