Experience one of Portugal’s rural Carnival traditions in this full-day experience from Coimbra to Aigra Nova, a schist village in the Serra da Lousã. Known locally as the Entrudo, this vibrant celebration brings people together dressed in ancient folk masks, dancing to traditional music, and taking part in a one-day gathering rooted in centuries-old customs.

Your day begins with a scenic drive from Coimbra to the village. Once there, you’ll wander through the cobblestone streets and visit the interpretation center, where you’ll learn about the cultural heritage of Portugal’s schist villages and their Carnival traditions.

You then join villagers as they parade through the streets wearing handmade cork masks, teasing the crowds with humorous verses. After the festivities, you’ll share lunch with locals celebrating alongside you before returning to Coimbra.

This is a rare invitation to step inside a living ritual. Aigra Nova is part of the Aldeias do Xisto, a network of schist villages where life is shaped by a tight-knit community and a strong connection to the land. Here, rural traditions are still kept alive, including the Entrudo — a rare form of Carnival that has survived through memory and the villagers’ enduring spirit.

Alexandra introduces you to the masked villagers and explains the meaning behind their handcrafted cork masks, made from the village’s own oak trees. She takes you through local houses and the interpretation center, talking you through the customs preserved across Portugal’s schist villages, while giving you time to take in this once-a-year celebration.

In the past, it was mostly men who took part in the masquerade. As many residents migrated to the cities, women and girls began joining in to keep the tradition and ensure its continuity.

This photography experience takes you front and backstage at an iconic tango show in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires. Hosted by a professional photographer, the activity starts with an introductory talk in a San Telmo cafe where you'll learn about the camera settings and techniques required for shooting moving objects in low light. After this, you will walk a short distance to the theater where the rest of the evening plays out over photography, art, dance, and conversation.

Once seated at a premium table with a clear view of the stage, you will photograph the dancers and orchestra without obstructions. Premium beverages and ice cream is served during the show, while Bernardo mentors you through the photography and shares cultural insights into tango culture. At a convenient moment, you will access the backstage area for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and photograph the tango dancers while they prepare their make-up and costumes ahead the show.

This rare-access experience immerses you in the passion and art of a Buenos Aires tango show. Hosted by a globally-published local photographer, you will view this splendid performance from the perspective of an artist. Susana and Angelo are passionate founders who put in their heart and talents to the development of the center and the support for the grannies. Susana is a designer and Angelo is a psychologist, both believe in the natural potential of people, who just need the right stage to shine.


Japan

This experience follows the full arc of ikebana, starting at Rokkaku-dō Temple, a historical site that the Ikenobō school locates as the origin of ikebana in Kyoto. Here, Ryoko introduces the cultural and spiritual foundations of Japanese flower arrangement as an ancient art. 

Next, at Hanamasa, a flower shop in Sanjo with a long history of supplying shrines and temples, you choose the seasonal stems that shape your creative process, selecting the materials you will later work with. From there, the experience continues to Ryoko’s private studio along the Kamo River. While you typically enjoy a scenic walk to the studio, she provides comfortable transportation in inclement weather or for guests with limited mobility. 

In a serene setting, you learn the fundamental principles of ikebana — balance, line, and negative space — and compose your own arrangement using the flowers you selected earlier. The session closes with light refreshments and time to sit with the work you have made.

The experience follows a beautiful sequence — story, material, practice. Encountering ikebana in Kyoto, where it grew out of the practice of offering flowers at Buddhist altars and later developed into a formal art, gives it special relevance. You come to understand that ikebana is not generic Japanese flower arrangement, but a discipline refined over centuries, particularly during the Muromachi period.

Instead of working with stems selected in advance, you choose the flowers and carry them to the studio. What you make is shaped by the path that led there. In Kyoto, ikebana is tied to seasonality and to a way of seeing the life of plants as they appear in nature, not simply their final appearance in a vessel.

Ryoko’s guidance is shaped by Mishō-ryū, a school that pays close attention to nature. She teaches these ideas with clarity for international guests while keeping their cultural depth intact. You leave with the confidence to carry the practice beyond this experience.

You will meet Ryoko in front of the entrance to Starbucks Kyoto Karasuma Rokkaku. If you prefer, you can pre-arrange for Ryoko to meet you inside the café if you arrive early and would like to wait there with a drink or snack.

Ryoko Arnwine is a floral designer and ikebana practitioner based in Kyoto. Her work is rooted in years of study in Mishō-ryū ikebana in Osaka, where she trained. She worked as a floral designer at The Ritz-Carlton Osaka and then brought that practice to New York, continuing her floral work and opening her a ikebana shop before returning to Kyoto, the city where the tradition first took shape.

Her teaching brings together long study in Japanese floral tradition and more than fifteen years of practice across Japan and New York. Shaped by a school that emphasizes close observation of nature, her approach is grounded and attentive to the cultural ideas that give ikebana its depth.

Ryoko’s cross-cultural background shapes how she teaches and designs today, blending the traditions and training she grew up with and the modern influences she has embraced along the way. This allows her to explain complex Japanese aesthetic ideas to international guests without simplifying or flattening them.

Spoiler: this experience contains a lot of food. This 3-hour asado experience in Mendoza isn't a show, it's a rare opportunity to peek into how local families really live—and as you'll discover for yourself—food is at the forefront of the lifestyle. After being collected from your hotel, Julieta will take you to her usual neighborhood wine stores and local markets to pick up the essentials. As Julieta will tell you, part of the fun is choosing together.

Once at Julieta's home, you will partake in Argentina’s most iconic gathering: the family asado. Previa comes first— where drinks, snacks, and conversation are shared as music plays. Together, you will prepare the meat, chop the veggies, and sip wine while the embers do their thing. And after that? You will take it easy over the sacred ritual of sobremesa concluding with coffee, Fernet, and a homemade dessert. There is no need to rush and no script, just the joy of food, stories, and connection.

If you're looking for an unconventional neighborhood with art galleries, parks to hang out in, and lots of young, trendy people, Newtown is the place for you. I basically spend all my weekends there, drinking coffee, going to book clubs, working at the community kitchen Lentil as Anything, and having a beer at one of the lively bars at night. 

Australians love vintage – which makes Newtown the heaven for vintage clothes, cameras, vinyl records, and much more. I’ve got some new sandals, a polaroid camera, and jewelry, all unique pieces at an amazing price. Worth the hype!

You can easily get there by train, it's just a ride from Town Hall, or simply stay a few days in one of the hostels in Newtown.

Here, the ancient art of leather tanning transforms raw hides into beautifully supple fabrics through a strikingly colorful yet arduous process. As you navigate the narrow alleys leading to the tanneries, the air grows thick with a pungent aroma, a hallmark of this traditional craft. Things to look for:

1. The Chouara Tannery, perhaps the most famous in Fes, alongside Sidi Moussa, offers a rare glimpse into the labor-intensive process of leather production. Hundreds of workers from multiple generations of families toil from sunrise to sunset. They labor over open vats filled with a vivid mosaic of natural dyes and pigeon dung, an essential component in softening the leather. This spectacle of color and effort unfolds beneath the Moroccan sun, casting a palette that feels almost surreal against the earthy tones of the Medina.

2. Visitors are handed a sprig of mint to ward off the overwhelming smells. The sensory overload is part of the experience!

3. Guides explain the dyeing process, pointing out the use of natural ingredients like saffron, poppy flower, indigo, and henna. 

4. After dyeing, the leathers are laid out to dry on the nearby rooftops, creating an iconic and photogenic scene that defines the visual landscape of the tanneries. 

5. A visit to the tanneries is an education in the tenacity and skill of the Moroccan artisans who maintain these centuries-old techniques. Despite modern advancements, these methods have resisted change, preserved by the artisans’ dedication to their heritage. 

As you leave, the sight of the vibrant leathers, the sound of workers chanting in rhythm, and the smell of natural tannins linger, leaving a lasting impression of a craft preserved in time. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes as the area can be wet and slippery.
