Set along the banks of the Nervión River, Bilbao is famous for its blend of neo-Renaissance and Modernist architecture, as well as Frank Gehry's contemporary icon, the Guggenheim Museum. Since the museum opened in 1997, Bilbao has become synonymous with fine art and cultural tourism. But, as a home of Basque language and culture for centuries, the city has a long and proud history, perhaps most significantly represented today but its food culture, the region's famous pintxos and cider, and Athletic, the city's famous football club. As well as offering plenty for a city break, Bilbao also works as a base for travelers who want to explore picturesque towns around the Bay of Biscay, such as San Sebastian, and the famous wine region of La Rioja.
