Your first stop is the Museo de los Seris, guided by a local Seri community member who will share stories of resistance, tradition, and the evolution of Comcáac (Seri) identity. For over 40 years, Francesco has transformed threads of gold and silver into intricate jewelry, working entirely by hand with tools and techniques passed down through generations.

You'll learn how Sardinian filigree is created—from raw materials to the delicate process that gives each piece its unique character. In his studio, Francesco introduces the region’s iconic forms: traditional wedding rings, ornate buttons worn on bridal gowns, and pendants that tell stories of Sardinia’s past. He also shares his family’s history, showing old photographs taken in the same space where his workshop now stands.

You'll hear about the area’s centuries-old link to gold and silver mining and the ancient repoussé and chasing technique that Francesco still practices. While rooted in tradition, he also explores contemporary designs.

Francesco Serra is a master goldsmith and filigree artist. A graduate of the Istituto Statale d’Arte of Nuoro, he began his career as an apprentice before opening his own workshop, Esseffe, in 1983. For over four decades, Francesco has been creating intricate jewelry by hand, blending traditional Sardinian designs with his own contemporary vision. His work reflects a deep respect for heritage, technique, and the quiet beauty of craftsmanship passed down through generations.

This full-day route moves through the Puuc hill country, a region shaped by low hills, limited surface water and a demanding landscape. You begin at Uxmal, the best-known city of the Puuc region and UNESCO World Heritage site. Built between the 7th and 10th centuries, Uxmal is known for its well-preserved architecture and refined decorative style. Smooth lower walls are topped with intricate mosaic façades and repeated masks of Chaac, the rain god — architecture shaped by both belief and the need to manage scarce water through underground cisterns.

From Uxmal, you continue to Sayil, a smaller, less crowded Maya site with dense residential and administrative structures. Its palace complex and façades feature columns and geometric latticework, suggesting a narrative tied to power, warfare, and local tradition.

Lunch in Muna, a town shaped by both colonial and Indigenous histories, is followed by a visit to a freshwater cenote, where you can swim and cool off before returning to Mérida.

This experience is designed to share the most evocative Maya sites in the Puuc region, paired with access to a freshwater cenote. Uxmal is widely visited, Sayil far less so, but visiting them with Zac and his local guides changes the experience. Their combined perspective brings history, legend, and myth into focus, offering a deeper understanding of both places. 

The route is grounded in landscape as much as architecture. Puuc means hill, and the day follows the terrain that shaped settlement patterns — from elevated stone cities to a cenote that brings the story back to the region’s reliance on seasonal rain and stored water.

Your visit to Uxmal and Sayil is enriched by the voices you hear along the way. Like all of Zac’s tours, this combines archaeological context with local perspectives. Your archaeologist host offers an overview of Maya history, while local knowledge adds nuance and continuity. You hear legends, details and interpretations often absent from standard visits.

The two sites of Uxmal and Sayil offer a deep look into the Maya world, pairing one of the most important Puuc cities with a closely connected regional site. Uxmal is the larger of the two, known for its scale and planning, including the Governor’s Palace and its major pyramidal structures.

Sayil provides a different experience. Smaller and quieter, its multi-chambered palace complex is especially admired for its architectural detail and layout, and gives a sense of how a Maya city functioned beyond its main ceremonial spaces.

Uxmal shows Puuc architecture at its most formal and monumental; Sayil reveals the same style applied to everyday governance and domestic life. Seen together, the two sites clarify how Maya cities in this region were organized and sustained.

After lunch, you stop at a cenote between Uxmal and Mérida, such as X-Batún, for a swim. After hours spent walking archaeological sites in the heat, the water offers a welcome pause before the return.

Many cenotes in this area are partially covered. Tree roots descend through openings above, reaching down into clear freshwater. Entering into this cooler, quieter space shaped by stone, water, and time - creates a surreal and beautiful effect of descending into another world. 

Cenotes are common in northern Yucatán, but those found along the Puuc route are less crowded and often feel more enclosed and intimate. Stopping here after visiting Uxmal and Sayil connects the region’s architecture back to its most basic requirement: water.

Rather than treating the cenote as a separate attraction, this stop closes the day in a way that reflects how the landscape has always shaped life in the region.

Venice’s history is inseparable from its bond with the water that surrounds it. This experience begins where the lagoon meets the entrance of the Grand Canal, reading the skyline of San Giorgio and Punta della Dogana as a way into the city’s past.

The navigation continues around Punta della Dogana and the Basilica della Salute, following lines that reveal stories of commerce, devotion and resilience. From here the route moves toward islands that marked important moments in the life of the Republic. Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. This experience takes you to Barcelos, a historic town in northern Portugal known as the birthplace of the iconic Barcelos Rooster and a living center of Portuguese folk art. About an hour’s drive from Porto, Barcelos has long been recognized for its vibrant crafts scene, particularly pottery.

Florencia Campos Correa, or Flor, is a Chilean-Spanish textile designer and author based in Santiago. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Flor has authored several books packed with vibrant pattern inspiration and projects. Her nature motifs are translated into floral crochet designs published in a British magazine and she has penned a children's story which inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in the youngest of budding designers. 

The experience begins Luca’s family home in the heart of Mamoiada. After a brief introduction in this 19th-century house, you’ll head to the vineyard just outside the village—a landscape shaped by vines, granite, and centuries of tradition.

There, among Cannonau rows and sweeping hills, stands a nuraghe: a prehistoric stone tower built by Sardinia’s ancient people, still intact after thousands of years. Beside it is a small farmhouse and a wooden patio overlooking the vines—your table for a guided tasting of three wines, including Luca’s rare Cannonau Bianco, made from an ancient cross between Cannonau and Gallòpu.

This white grape, known as Gallòpu, is now produced only by Luca in all of Barbagia. The tasting is followed by a traditional lunch: local appetizers, handmade ravioli with ragù, and slow-cooked sheep stew—a moment of pure Sardinian depth.

Luca is the only winemaker in Barbagia producing Gallòpu, an ancient white grape once nearly lost. His Cannonau Bianco is not just rare—it’s a symbol of his vision: to innovate without erasing the past, to make wines that speak both of place and of intention.

Alongside him is his father, who still tends the vines with the same hands that shaped them decades ago. Their work isn’t rushed; it follows the rhythm of the soil, the altitude, the granite. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

This 14-day Peloponnese road trip is designed for travelers who enjoy long scenic drives and the freedom of shaping each day on the road. It unfolds through constantly changing landscapes, from urban Athens to fortified coastlines, mountain interiors, remote peninsulas, and fertile wine country. DAY 1 – ATHENS TO NAFPLIO | The journey begins in Athens with a guided exploration of the Acropolis, uncovering layers of history. In the afternoon, you collect the car and head south, leaving the city behind. A stop at the Corinth Canal marks your entry into the Peloponnese before arriving in Nafplio by early evening.
DAY 2 – NAFPLIO | Late morning brings a guided wine-focused experience that deepens your understanding of Nafplio and its surrounding region. DAY 10 – AREOPOLI TO KALAMATA | Leaving Mani behind, you drive west through olive groves and cultivated plains. The road widens as you approach Kalamata, where arrival around midday leaves time to explore the town or walk along the seafront.
DAY 11 – KALAMATA TO PYLOS | You continue along the Messinian coast, stopping at Koroni and Methoni to explore their seaside fortresses. By late afternoon, you reach Pylos, overlooking the calm waters of Navarino Bay.
DAY 12 – PYLOS TO OLYMPIA | The route turns inland again, trading coastline for rolling countryside. Arrival in Olympia around midday allows time to orient yourself before a quieter evening.
DAY 13 – OLYMPIA TO NEMEA | A scenic drive crosses Arcadia’s mountainous interior, with stops in Dimitsana and Stemnitsa revealing stone village life. By evening, vineyards replace mountain roads as you arrive in Nemea.

Balat and Fener, two charming neighborhoods on the Golden Horn in Istanbul, offer a captivating blend of vibrant history, colorful streets, and multicultural heritage. These areas, once home to thriving Jewish and Greek communities, now invite visitors to wander their labyrinthine streets, where every corner tells a story of the city’s layered past. The juxtaposition of historic wooden houses with contemporary art galleries and cozy cafes creates a unique atmosphere that combines nostalgia with modern vibrancy.

1. Colorful Wooden Houses: Stroll down Kiremit Street to admire rows of brightly painted, Ottoman-era wooden houses. Their whimsical colors and intricate details make them a photographer’s dream.
2. Ahrida Synagogue: One of the oldest synagogues in Istanbul, this historic site dates back to the 15th century. It reflects Balat’s rich Jewish heritage and features a boat-shaped bema symbolizing Noah’s Ark.

Balat and Fener

Svalbard & Jan Mayen

On a rainy day, at 78°N, M/S Polar Girl sets out from Longyearbyen to Pyramiden. Even in dreary weather, there is joy in watching the puffins swimming alongside the boat.

Then we step on to the most surreal of ghost towns, Pyramiden, a Russian mining settlement with the northern-most statue of Lenin. 

The decision to abandon in the 90s was sudden. People were given just hours to leave. Signs of a hasty departure are everywhere. Dried up plants. Rusted playground swings. Utensils and stoves left in disarray. Hand-drawn artwork taped on the walls. 

The guide points out the men’s and women’s dorm buildings, euphemistically called London and Paris. Everything is trapped in a 1970s time-warp. A blast from the Soviet past. 

Trust Arktikugol (Arctic Coal), a Russian state owned coal mining company, continues to run this, now as a tourist destination. Perfect for filming a James Bond movie.

Back on the boat, we have views of the glacier and freshly barbequed burgers to cheer us up.

There are so many museums and art galleries in Paris that it's hard to decide where to go first. Most tourists want to stand in line at the Louvre, admire Claude Monet, or visit the National Museum of Art – but as so few check out the famous street art of Paris, we knew it was our thing to do.
There is so much history behind each piece of art or painting out there that it is worth investing some extra money and time to immerse yourself in Paris's artistic exploration fully. We did a whole self-organized art walk visiting 7 streets, with an audio tour, and visited the different places on our own (though you can get a personal guide). 
Our highlight was Rue Saint-Maur – a 2km-long street painted mainly by the artist Kashink. The artist plays with classic elements of Parisian street art and combines them with modern political messages.

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the Tünektepe Cable Car (Tünektepe Teleferik), a breathtaking ride that takes visitors up to 618 meters (2,028 feet) above sea level for panoramic views of Antalya, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Taurus Mountains. Offering a perfect blend of adventure and scenery, this cable car experience is a must-do for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone wanting a bird’s-eye view of one of Turkey’s most beautiful coastal cities.

1. Scenic 9-minute ride in a modern cable car, ascending from Sarısu Station to the summit, offering unparalleled views of Antalya’s coastline and mountain landscape.

2. At the top, a 360-degree observation deck allows visitors to take in spectacular views of the city, Mediterranean Sea, and Konyaaltı Beach.

3. A cozy café and restaurant at the summit offers Turkish tea, coffee, and light snacks, making it a perfect spot to relax while enjoying the scenery.

4. Hiking and photo opportunities along the mountaintop trails allow visitors to explore the natural beauty of the area while capturing incredible photos.

5. Sunset visits offer the most magical experience, as the sky transforms into shades of orange and pink, making for unforgettable photography moments.

Visitor Tip: Arrive early or visit on a weekday to avoid crowds. Bring a light jacket, as it can be windy at the top, and don’t forget your camera for some of the best aerial views in Antalya!

Tünektepe Cable Car

Jamaica

A Black River Safari took us into the heart of the largest freshwater wetland ecosystem in Jamaica, the Great Morass at the Black River. This area, spanning 125 square miles, is a haven for biodiversity, featuring giant mangrove trees and an array of swamp animals, including the endangered American crocodile, protected under the Wildlife Protection Act in Jamaica. 

The guides spotted crocodiles of various sizes in the water and along the riverbanks, including baby crocodiles. Also several bird species call this area home. As we glided along the river, we saw snowy egrets, great egrets, and great blue herons, among other bird species.

The River teems with mangrove trees, ferns, and water lilies. The mangroves are particularly noteworthy, with some species having roots extending 40 feet downward. A curious aspect of the Black River is its dark color, which becomes more noticeable as you move upstream. This is due to the peat soil at the bottom of the river, which, despite giving the river its dark appearance, keeps the water clear. 

If you're interested in learning more about the crocodiles, many tours conclude with a visit to the Crocodile Nursery, where young and injured crocodiles are cared for until they are ready to return to the wild.

Gallerie dell'Accademia stands as a bastion of Venetian artistic mastery housing the world's largest collection of Venetian art. Key highlights:
1: Historical and Artistic Lineage: Founded in 1750, the Gallerie dell'Accademia began as an avant-garde art school. It gained prominence with instructors like Giambattista Tiepolo and later, under Napoleon's aegis, transformed into a public gallery. This blend of academic roots and artistic treasures offers a unique narrative of Venetian art history​​.

2: Chronicles in Art: Situated near the Grand Canal, this gallery occupies a complex that includes the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità. Its 24 rooms, arrayed around two courtyards, take visitors on a journey through various Italian art styles, from Byzantine to Baroque, showcasing the stylistic richness of Venetian art​​.

3: A Treasure Trove of Masterpieces: The Gallerie boasts an extensive collection of works by titans like Titian, Tintoretto, and Bellini. It also houses the famous 'Vitruvian Man' by Leonardo da Vinci, a symbol of Renaissance humanism and rationalism, adding a rare gem to its already rich collection​​.

4: Expansiveness of the Collections: While certain artworks may be unavailable at the time of your visit, and a few collections may be repetitive, most visitors are captivated by the expansive array of masterpieces and recommend using an audio guide for a more enriching experience. The gallery's vast collection can take hours to fully appreciate, offering insights into Venice's artistic heritage​​.

Portugal’s Marvão Castle, perched atop the Serra de São Mamede at 860 meters (2,821 feet) above sea level, offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Portugal. Located near the Spanish border in the Alentejo region, this medieval fortress was a key defensive stronghold, guarding the frontier for centuries. With its well-preserved walls, cobbled streets, and sweeping vistas, Marvão is a must-visit for history lovers and photographers seeking a true hidden gem.


1. Stunning 360-degree views over the Alentejo plains, the Spanish border, and the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, especially magical at sunset.

2. Perfectly preserved medieval walls, offering scenic walkways along the ramparts for an immersive experience of the castle’s defensive structure.

3. The castle keep (Torre de Menagem), a great vantage point providing an even higher perspective of the surrounding landscapes.

4. Charming whitewashed village, with narrow streets, traditional stone houses, and inviting cafés, adding to Marvão’s fairy-tale ambiance.
