This half-day private mosaic experience takes place in the studio of the bilingual muralist, Shannon McEvoy. Under Shannon's guidance, you will design and fabricate your own mosaic masterpiece to take home as a memento of your time in Chile.  From the Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert, to the colorful hills of Valparaiso, to the Villarrica Volcano in Pucon, to the rock formations of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile is filled with breathtaking landscapes that are gorgeous to mosaic.

Shannon will work with you to help you bring your vision to fruition. After the activity concludes, Shannon will grout your mosaic tile and help you to arrange the pick-up from her studio 48+ hours later. During the workshop, you'll hear of the significance of mosaics in Chile—a country famed for its street art and murals. You'll hear about Shannon's role as a mosaic muralist working in Santiago, Puente Alto (the Mosaic Capital of the Southern Hemisphere), and beyond.

This experience invites you into the intimate studio of an artist in Santiago to create your own Chile-inspired mosaic artwork. This may be of an abstract style or inspired by Chilean landscapes. You may choose to collaborate with your travel partner and create one mosaic to take home, or create individual masterpieces.

Over the course of the workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of mosaic techniques as Shannon helps you assemble your artwork. As an artistic director, Shannon collaborates with Chilean muralists and champions the community aspect of creation—she believes that art is for everyone. During this activity, you'll have the opportunity to quiz Shannon about life as a bilingual expat artist in Chile, her current projects, and how you can bring more creativity into your life. This bilingual mosaic masterclass is the perfect opportunity to practice your Spanish and pick up some essential "Chilenismos" (Chilean slang) for your onward travels.

This experience takes place in Shannon's studio in Providencia, Santiago de Chile. The exact address to is provided after booking. If traveling by metro, take Line 1 and alight at either Pedro de Valdivia or Manuel Montt. It's a 15-minute walk to Shannon’s studio from either station. Uber and Cabify rides are widely available in Santiago.

Shannon is a multimedia artist who loves exploring different languages and cultures, meeting new people, and listening to their stories. Originally from Minnesota, she studied abroad in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. The street art of Valparaíso influenced her so profoundly that she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and pursued a career as a muralist.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—but her talents don’t stop there. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography.

Shannon loves sharing her passions for art and language. To her, both are about expressing oneself and building meaningful connections. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she also speaks basic Portuguese.

Italy

The village of Bosa, with its colorful houses, rises between the Temo River and the rolling hills of Planargia, about 50 km from Alghero. You will walk through its streets at sunset, while the sky is tinged with shades of blue and orange, and the air is filled with the scent of the sea.

The multicolored houses of the village are reflected in the calm waters of the Temo River, creating an enchanting play of light as the sun sets on the horizon, turning the landscape to gold.

Led by Massimiliano, an expert photographer, you will have the opportunity to capture the magic of this moment from the best panoramic viewpoints, walking among ancient architecture and cobbled paths.

You will wait for the blue hour, which envelops Bosa in a dreamy atmosphere, to capture spectacular images, as well as emotions, lasting memories, and the fleeting beauty of a unique moment, while the world around you transforms into a work of art.

Bosa is an old village, one of the most beautiful in Italy. Its colorful houses give it extraordinary charm, while its ancient architecture offers fascinating views at every turn.

As an expert photographer, Massimiliano can suggest the most captivating and lesser-known spots, making your visit truly unique. He can also provide technical advice on how to capture the vibrant houses and architectural details, such as wrought iron balconies, decorated doors, vintage signs, and carved doors.

Along the way, panoramic viewpoints offer breathtaking vistas of the village from above, the river, the sea, and the surrounding countryside. You will also discover the artisans of Bosa, skilled masters in gold filigree, filet lace (a local lace inspired by fishermen's nets), and coral, which was once abundant off the coast of Bosa.

At the end of the day, a stop at a wine shop will allow you to try local specialties paired with a glass of Malvasia di Bosa while sharing impressions.

Corviale is one of the most ambitious and controversial housing projects ever built in Rome. Conceived in 1972 and stretching for nearly a kilometer, this massive complex—locally known as Il Serpentone (“the big snake”)—was inspired by Brutalist and Rationalist architecture and designed to house 8,500 people.

Walking through Corviale today means entering the layered story of a city that, in the 1970s, faced deep social inequality—when a third of its population still lived in shack settlements. This experience unfolds as a moving urban workshop: you’ll explore the hopes and failures that shaped this space, from its utopian promise of public housing to the long years of abandonment, marginalization, and stigma.

As the district undergoes a slow and ongoing transformation, this walk invites you to question what renewal really means, and how architecture, policy, and community intersect in the making—and remaking—of a city.

This experience offers a rare chance to explore Corviale with a sociologist who has spent years studying the urban stereotypes often attached to Rome’s outskirts. As you walk through the architecture and social fabric of this monumental complex, you’ll gain insight into the hopes and contradictions that shaped it.

The conversation will also open up to a broader reflection on similar projects from the same era—like the Vele di Scampia in Naples, built to house families displaced by the 1980 earthquake. Both Corviale and Scampia were born of urgency and idealism, yet followed different paths. This comparison adds a deeper layer to the walk, encouraging a critical reading of how cities respond to housing crises.

You'll end the experience with cappuccino and cornetto at the only café currently open in the area—a quiet reminder of how isolation, resilience, and change still coexist on the edge of Rome.

Irene Ranaldi is an urban sociologist and independent researcher based in Rome. She was the first in Italy to publish a study on gentrification comparing her own neighborhood, Testaccio, with Astoria in New York. Her work draws from historical archives and years of field research, focusing on the social transformations of urban districts and the shifting boundaries between city centers and peripheries.

Japan

In this experience, your guide Rio will introduce you to Asagaya, a quiet neighborhood of western Tokyo where the pace of change has been much slower than in the central city. This is Rio’s neighborhood where he’s learned the names and faces of shopkeepers, artists, and regular customers and is happy to introduce them to visitors.

You’ll stroll along the shotengai, an old shopping street where locals would spend their leisure time browsing shops, eating snacks, and greeting neighborhood friends. 

You’ll enjoy a retro-style lunch at an old shop specializing in okonomiyaki, a savory pancake before exploring the unique shops along the shotengai including a knife shop, tea shop, and a second-hand kimono shop. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to meet and converse with shopkeepers, and learn more about the rich history of the Asagaya area.

You will conclude your tour at a standing sake bar for drinks and conversation, and perhaps share a friendly “kampai!” cheers with new friends.

You’ll explore the origins of photography and learn about wet plate collodion—a 19th-century technique that uses glass or metal plates, chemical baths, and a large format camera. Pierre will demonstrate each step while coating, sensitizing, exposing, and developing images.

Watching your portrait come to life is a striking visual moment: deep contrasts, delicate textures, and a vintage feel that’s hard to find elsewhere. While your image slowly appears, Pierre shares family stories and his personal view of Bordeaux and photography. If the light conditions are good, you can choose to shoot outdoors and include a glimpse of the city in your portrait.

The uniqueness of this experience lies in the physicality of the process and the one-of-a-kind result. Wet plate collodion photography doesn’t aim to imitate the past—it uses an early technique to craft images that are singular, dense, and deeply present. Each portrait is shaped by light and chemistry, with a richness of tones and details that can’t be replicated.

Pierre Wetzel has spent years refining this 19th-century process, working entirely with a large-format camera and mastering the subtle balance of materials and timing. His approach transforms a technical procedure into a moment of artistic exchange, revealing the tension between chance and control that defines the collodion process.

Fixing Time in Saint-Michel

Note: Joining Pierre in the dark room to see the photo come to life is something special. A narrow staircase, not suitable for people with mobility issues, leads to the dark room in the cellar: you can still book the experience, but you won’t be able to see the developing process. 

Pierre Wetzel is a Bordeaux-based photographer known for his dedication to wet plate collodion, a 19th-century photographic process that he has mastered over years of experimentation. He lives and works in the Saint-Michel district, where he runs his studio and regularly collaborates on community-based art projects that connect photography with local stories and social engagement.

Morocco

At first glance, Marrakech appears like a whirlwind — a maze of color, sound, motion. But beneath the surface lies a deliberate order: the Golden Triangle, a sacred geometry that has shaped the city’s soul.

This is a walking and storytelling tour through that invisible structure: a symbolic triad that defines Marrakech’s spiritual, intellectual and artisanal legacy. At its heart sits Jemaa el Fna, the legendary square where trade, culture and belief converge. Then, you'll follow its three pivotal corners: the scholarly Ben Youssef district, the craft-based eastern medina, and the towering Koutoubia Mosque. You’ll pause for tea and a snack in a local Marrakshi home in the Medina.

Our first stop is near the first metro station in Puente Alto. From here, we will follow the route of the metro line from the outside. Along the way, we will admire a total of 4 metro stations and 84 monumental pillars adorned with the beautiful mosaics of Isidora Paz Lopez and her team from the 2014 intervention. 

Covering over 4,000 square meters, this project is considered the largest mosaic intervention in Latin America and the third largest in the world. We will walk at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to take photos. Water, electrolytes, and snacks will be provided for the walk.  

Our mosaic trek concludes at the Municipality Building of Puente Alto.  

Shannon McEvoy participated in some of the mosaic installations in Puente Alto and is knowledgeable about the others. Her walking tour focuses on the stories behind the murals: how artists collaborate and what public art represents to a local community and the overall identity of a city.

We will stop and admire the mosaic on the front of the Municipality Building of Puente Alto. This is where Shannon participated in an international mosaic event in 2014. This was organized by the artist Isidora Paz Lopez – the same artist who organized the rest of the project we have viewed. Nearby, we also have the opportunity to view the spectacular mosaics at the end of Puente Alto’s monumental metro project.

Shannon McEvoy participated in the mosaic installations on the Municipality Building in Puente Alto in a two-week international invitational event in 2014. Due to Shannon’s first-hand experience, this part of the tour is where you will hear some of the most in-depth stories behind the mural process.

Originally from Minnesota, multimedia artist Shannon McEvoy studied in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. Inspired by the street art of Valparaíso, she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and later became a muralist herself.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—though her talents extend far beyond. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography. As an artistic director, she has overseen several monumental public art installations in Santiago and beyond.

Passionate about both art and language, Shannon sees them as powerful tools for self-expression and meaningful connection. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she also speaks basic Portuguese.
