La Madrugá is the most intense night of Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Seville. During the week leading to Easter, the city fills with processions organized by religious brotherhoods — traditions dating back to the 16th century.
Around midnight on Maundy Thursday into the early hours of Good Friday, Hermandad de la Macarena — founded in 1595 and one of the most revered brotherhoods — leaves its basilica and moves slowly through the city in a procession that lasts up to fourteen hours.

You witness the Virgen de la Esperanza — her 17th-century image with glass tears — carried beneath a canopy of candles. Trumpets sound, drums pulse, incense drifts through the streets. At times a saeta — a raw flamenco lament sung from a balcony — falls into the silence. This experience places you at street level at a few emblematic points in the passage of La Macarena through Seville. With a knowledgeable local Seville guide, you’re in the flow of the procession — at close range to the nazarenos and pasos.

 For many, La Macarena is a symbol of Seville itself, generations have brought their prayers, fears and hopes to her. She is worshipped as the protector of bullfighters, recipient of emerald brooches, and bearer of three mantles worn in succession. Her float advances at the pace of the men beneath it, their feet visible below draped velvet.

You’re positioned close by and sometimes within the procession as you cross from one point to another, and experiencing its rhythm. Rise and shine: long before the sun makes its arrival over the valleys of Atacama Desert, you'll be on the road to one of the main gateways to the Andean highlands of Chile. This is a full-day photographic odyssey of some of the Atacama's most shocking natural wonders where you will contemplate important high-altitude ecosystems rich in biodiversity and cultural significance. These include the wetlands of Machuca and Putana, the Tatio Geyser, the Cactus Canyon, and the Puritama Hot Springs.

This experience is delivered by a professional photographer who will mentor you through the process of capturing the landscapes. As a private excursion focused on photography, the pace is slower than typical tours operating to these beauty spots. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Art to Coast in Valparaíso

What does the southern end of the world look like? After five and a half l-o-n-g hours from Punta Arenas, out of the blue appears Hotel Explora Salto Chico - and it’s breathtaking. With a stunning, modern countenance, views-to-die-for of Torres del Paine (the Towers) and Cuernos del Paine (the Horns), and the sound of the Salto Chico waterfall as we linger over amazing food and excellent Chilean wine.

The Explora guides ensure they get us out of bed. My favorite experience - a day-long hike to Grey glacier. And when we get really close, our guides hop into a little boat to fetch thousand-year-old ice from the glacier for little drinks of Pisco Sour! 

Patagonia’s Parc Nacional Torres del Paine has picture postcard views everywhere. If you are a keen hiker, try the Circuit or the W. I stick to day hikes as a rule - if you are like me, try Grey Glacier, French Valley Glacier or Base of the Paine Towers.

Going to Extremes

Chile’s Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), located in the Atacama Desert, is one of the most surreal and otherworldly landscapes on Earth. With its wind-sculpted sand dunes, jagged rock formations, and salt-covered valleys, this Martian-like terrain resembles the surface of the Moon.
