During Semana Santa, you watch one of Seville’s most important traditions unfold from a private balcony.

This exclusive annual experience is offered during Holy Week (March 29 – April 5, 2026) with limited availability each day.

Semana Santa in Seville dates to 16th century and blends social gathering with deep religious devotion. Solemn processions wind through narrow streets, organized by 70 of Seville’s church brotherhoods carrying large pasos — elaborate floats depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ or honoring the Virgin Mary. Candles, music, incense and the steady rhythm of processions transform the city throughout the week. In Seville, it has long been customary for local families to watch the processions from private balconies along the route.

The experience lasts about 90 minutes. From this vantage point, and depending on the day, you observe one or two processions pass below while a Sevillian host explains the traditions, symbolism and structure of the processions.

Semana Santa is a deeply rooted tradition. The pasos carried through the streets contain sculptures that are centuries old. Beneath them walk costaleros, who train throughout the year to carry the heavy structures while remaining hidden beneath the float. Around them move the nazarenos, penitents in tall hoods whose presence has been part of the procession for over five centuries. Watching from a balcony is a unique experience. From above you see the formation and choreography of the procession, and its rhythm of movement.

In Seville, balcony viewing during Semana Santa developed because the streets are extremely narrow, the processions move slowly, and crowds became difficult to navigate—even for locals. Families along the route began opening their balconies to relatives and guests. Today many of those same buildings still host balcony viewing along the official procession route. With access to one of these private balconies, you’re able to take part in this long-standing tradition.

In this full-day hiking tour, you start in the hills above Sarnadas, a rural village in the Algarve. Walk a 10-km circular trail through Serra do Caldeirão, a marked, undulating route through a region few visitors see. You pass orchards, dry stone walls, scrub and grazing paths. This is the meeting point of lowland and mountain — the Barrocal giving way to the Serra. Terraces cut into the schist and shale are shaped by generations of families. From the highest point, sweeping views open toward the Atlantic, offering a contrasting perspective between the countryside and coast.

After the hike, sit down in a village restaurant. Seasonal dishes. Local produce. Tables close together. The welcome is warm, informal, unhurried because it is simply how things happen here in rural Portugal.

In the afternoon, visit a small workshop where esparto grass is prepared and woven by hand. Local artisans demonstrate an ancestral craft rooted in the agricultural past of this region.

Most visitors stay near the Algarve’s beaches. This day moves inland, into Serra do Caldeirão, where small villages and agricultural rhythms continue outside the main tourist circuit, on terrain defined by soil and slopes. The hills — you soon realize — are not scenery but livelihood. The slopes you walk provided resilient esparto grass — a plant suited to hot, rocky ground for rope, baskets, tools, and everyday objects used in local households over generations. Today, only a handful of artisans continue the work of making. In the workshop, you see the fiber prepared and braided by hand, and you make a small piece yourself.

Joana Almeida was raised here in a family of biologists, she understands the geology, flora and fauna — and she knows the people and their stories. She explains how land, labor, culture and craft remain connected. Lunch in the village is part of the same system. Landscape, food and making are held together. Conversations unfold easily when community is present. 

After the morning hike, you sit down in a local village eatery for a traditional Algarvian lunch. The setting is informal and unhurried, shaped by the rhythms of the community rather than visitor schedules. The menu follows regional recipes and seasonal availability. Dishes reflect inland Algarve traditions — ingredients sourced locally and prepared in ways that have remained consistent across generations. Meals are served simply, in a space where neighboring tables may be filled with residents. This pause allows time to rest, talk to Joana, reflect on the landscape you’ve crossed, and experience rural life as daily routine.

The meal takes place in a working village where agriculture, seasonal rhythms, and community ties remain active. The flavors on the plate are tied directly to the terrain walked in the morning — soils that support orchards, small-scale farming, and grazing. Eating here situates the hike within lived context. This stage begins with a 10-km circular hike through the Algarve’s Barrocal landscape, the limestone belt that separates coastal plains from the Serra do Caldeirão. The terrain undulates gently, rising from orchards and dry stone walls into rolling hills marked by scrub, grazing paths, and exposed rock.

As you walk, you cross ground shaped by geology and agricultural use. Thin soils, terraced plots, scattered farmhouses. Seasonal blooms and hardy Mediterranean vegetation follow rainfall patterns and heat. The route gradually climbs to a ridge where, on clear days, the Atlantic appears beyond inland slopes — a reminder of how closely coast and mountain coexist in this region.

This is not a summit hike but a landscape walk, offering sustained views and physical immersion in the inland Algarve.

This is the Barrocal in interior Algarve — a lesser-known ecological and geological transition zone that defines how the region functions beyond its beaches. Walking here reveals how limestone and schist shaped settlement patterns, agriculture, and movement across the hills. Dry stone walls are not decorative; they hold thin soil in place. Orchards exist where water collects. Grazing follows slope and season.

In the afternoon, you visit a small workshop where local artisans introduce you to the traditional craft of working with esparto — a resilient native grass long used across southern Portugal for both utilitarian and decorative objects. You learn how the fibers are prepared, softened, and braided by hand. The techniques are practical and rooted in daily necessity, developed over generations in rural communities where esparto supplied rope, baskets, mats, and tools. Under guidance, you create your own simple piece, following the same manual gestures that once sustained local households.

Esparto weaving is part of the Algarve’s rural past, but it survives today through a small number of practitioners who continue the craft outside industrial production. The material itself reflects the terrain you have walked — a plant suited to dry, rocky slopes and Mediterranean heat. The workshop completes the day’s sequence: landscape in the morning, village life at midday, craft in the afternoon. The experience is tactile and immediate, connecting hand, material, and place.

Italy

This walk explores a different side of Florence, away from the museum circuit and into San Niccolò and the Oltrarno, where medieval streets, artisan workshops, wartime history, and Renaissance churches still shape life today. With Guido, you begin in San Niccolò, among small workshops and streets known for perfume makers and local trades. You stop for a hot slice of pizza and a glass of wine at a neighborhood bakery before heading towards the river.

Along the Lungarno, Guido traces the Second World War through this part of the city, explaining what happened here during the German occupation and why Ponte Vecchio, the gold trade, and the Vasari Corridor matter to that story. From there, the route continues into the Oltrarno, through streets overlooking the Arno and towards Palazzo Pitti, Santa Felicita, and Santo Spirito. The walk ends with the friars’ cloister and Michelangelo’s wooden crucifix, where Guido introduces the artist’s anatomical studies.

While learning about the Jewish people who relocated from Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Empire during the 19th and 20th centuries, you’ll hear how this  migration shaped commerce, tailoring, publishing, and the arts in Buenos Aires. An estimated 200,000 Jewish people now reside in the city — this experience is a chance to hear their tales from an insider at a relaxed pace.

This experience is curated and led by Jonathan, a researcher and art curator born into a Jewish family in Buenos Aires. Calling on his background, Jonathan weaves personal anecdotes into his commentary — thus providing a more personal and authentic account of local life and Jewish heritage. Beginning in Coimbra, you encounter a faience tradition documented since the 16th century, marked by blue-and-white painting on tin-glazed earthenware and decorative motifs that reflect Portugal’s maritime exchanges and academic culture. In Alcobaça, hand-painted ceramics developed in a monastery town that became an important pottery center from the 18th century onward, known for exuberant floral forms and richly glazed surfaces. The day continues to Ílhavo for lunch and a visit to a historic porcelain manufacturer, where porcelain production placed Portugal within the wider European tradition.

You visit workshops and institutions where clay is shaped, fired, painted, and glazed. You meet artisans and factory specialists who work from small ateliers to industrial production — gaining insight into how materials, technique, and design evolved.

This experience connects three ceramic traditions that are often encountered separately. Coimbra’s tin-glazed faience — porous earthenware coated in an opaque white glaze before cobalt decoration — differs materially and stylistically from Alcobaça’s hand-painted earthenware and from the fine, high-fired porcelain produced in Ílhavo. Seeing them in sequence clarifies distinctions in clay composition, firing temperature, glaze chemistry, and aesthetic intention.

With Alexandra as your guide, the day moves between intimate ateliers, working studios, and established institutions, including the historic Vista Alegre factory and museum. Along the way, you engage with artisans and specialists, gaining insight into work refined across generations. You are invited to observe closely, ask questions, and — when possible — try your hand at painting or shaping clay. Alexandra’s long-standing relationships in the ceramic community allow the experience to unfold through conversation and connection.

Before visiting the porcelain factory, you pause for lunch in Ílhavo or nearby Aveiro. The meal reflects the region’s coastal setting, where lagoon and Atlantic influence local ingredients and preparation. Fish, seafood, and regional specialties appear according to season and availability. The setting is informal, offering time to rest and transition before the afternoon visit.

The Alcobaça Monastery is one of the most important religious buildings in medieval Portugal, closely linked to the birth of the kingdom and the first dynasty of Portuguese monarchs.

The monastery was established in the mid-12th century by Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, as a gift to the Cistercian Order’s leader, Bernard of Clairvaux—one of the most powerful European figures of the time—in exchange for spiritual, economic, and political support.

Alcobaça was built according to Cistercian principles: simple, austere architectural lines, without interior decoration or images. Nevertheless, by the early 14th century, it had become the richest and most influential monastery in Portugal, largely due to the Cistercians’ innovations in agricultural technology and land management. The church and its surrounding structures are considered the best-preserved example of Cistercian architecture in Europe.

The church and monastery were the first Gothic buildings in Portugal. Construction of the complex was completed in the 13th century, although it received several later artistic additions in the Manueline and Baroque styles—such as the 16th-century cloisters and sacristy, and later, the 18th-century church towers, elaborate altarpieces, sculptures, and tile panels.

Inside the church are the unique Gothic tombs of King Pedro I and his mistress, Inês de Castro—central figures in a tragic love story that culminated in the murder of Inês by Pedro’s father, King Afonso IV.

The 13th-century Monastery of Coz was occupied by Cistercian nuns and was one of the few female monasteries in Portugal, dependent on the nearby Alcobaça Monastery. Mostly destroyed after the extinction of religious orders in Portugal in 1834, the church—originally from the 16th century—is the only part of the monastery that has been preserved. It features rich Baroque decoration, including beautiful blue and white tile panels, gilded altars, a large carved and gilded grille, and painted wooden ceilings.

The first impression of the Monastery of Coz reveals a building that appears to be in ruins—particularly the surrounding cloisters—and the only remaining structure has a simple, austere façade. But once inside the church and sacristy, you'll experience an architectural journey through various artistic styles, materials, and techniques, reflecting what was once a rich and powerful community of nuns who worked with and supported the nearby (male) Monastery of Alcobaça.

This off-the-beaten-track archaeological experience is designed for visitors to Mérida who want to explore lesser-known Maya heritage sites in the Yucatán, paired with a cenote visit.

You begin in the beautiful hills of the Puuc region at Oxkintok, an ancient Maya site known for its distinctive architecture, including a hieroglyphic stairway and underground tunnel system known as Tzat Tun Tzat, or “the Labyrinth,” which can sometimes be entered depending on conditions. Compared to better-known Puuc sites, Oxkintok remains quieter and less restored, allowing space to observe its layout and features without crowds.

From there, you continue to a cave, where ceramics and burials remain in situ. Zac explains how natural caves functioned within Maya culture — as ritual spaces, burial sites, and places closely connected to the natural and spiritual world.

The day concludes with lunch at a traditional restaurant, followed by time to swim at Cenote San Tito, before returning to Mérida.

Although Oxkintok lacks the single monumental pyramid found at larger Maya sites, its labyrinthine plazas, epic entrance arch, and underground structures are woven uniquely into the surrounding landscape. The place feels markedly different from more visited Puuc centers, offering the rare chance to spend time at a Maya city in  tranquility.

The visit continues at a group of cenotes located on land associated with a small, long-established Maya household. Access is private and requires prior coordination with the owners, something visitors aren’t able to arrange independently. This allows for a quieter, more respectful encounter with the landscape.
