Peka is one of the best known traditional Croatian dishes, despite looking simple at first, Peka requires a lot of skills and experience. At first glance, a peka seems like such a simple accessory – a domed lid shaped like a dome. Food cooked under peka, be it in a fireproof pot under the coals or directly on a stone slab, is a hearty meat and vegetable dish. Usually veal, lamb, or yearling beef covered with potatoes and other vegetables. Learn how the olives and oils are produced, enjoy tastings and peka lunch. 

This culinary adventure takes place at a small family farm based on producing and offering only products naturally grown at their state at village near Dubrovnik.

Mexico

A short guided hike of roughly two hours will take you to a series of caves featuring rustic paintings and traces of human habitation dating back over 10,000 years. They depict the early domestication period of the Zapotec people, when their ancestors first settled here as hunter-gatherers. These caverns are part of a larger network of over 200 caves in Yagul, where the earliest remnants of domesticated corn—a tiny and now obsolete variety known as teocintle—were discovered. This entire area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

As these caves are protected and the town operates under Indigenous law, it’s required that we travel with a local guide provided by the pueblo’s government office.

After the hike, we’ll continue the corn theme with lunch at a local restaurant, sampling one of the most iconic corn-based dishes in Oaxaca: the tlayuda. We’ll share a variety of styles, along with a refreshing non-alcoholic agua fresca.

This hike is a chance to appreciate the splendor of the Oaxacan countryside and gain insight into the earliest Zapotec people who settled in this land. Your host, a long-time Oaxaca resident with strong connections to this community, will arrange the hike with a guide from the local government office to ensure the experience complies with Indigenous law for this protected area. Participants can specify whether they would like the tour in English or Spanish. This offers unmatched insight into the history and ecology of the region.

You’ll then explore the magic of corn firsthand by trying one of Oaxaca’s most iconic delicacies—the tlayuda. Your host will transport you from the hike to one of the best venues near the city to enjoy this celebrated dish, then return you to your original meeting point once the meal is done. We recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes. Flip-flops and sandals are not advised to avoid potential injury. For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Each year, over 2 million wildebeest, zebras and antelope migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of water and fresh grazing . Experiencing this during July-October is an absolute spectacle.

The Mara Triangle is particularly great for watching river crossings in August and September - perilous for the animals as the river is packed with wily Nile crocodiles.

We stay with this herd of zebras for 3 days - waiting for them to decide to cross. It’s a matter of life and death for them - so they are understandably cautious  The zebra get to the banks more than 20 times, giving up at the very last minute, often spooked by a territorial hippo or a sneaky crocodile.

Finally, a brave zebra leaps forward into the water. And a second one follows fast. Suddenly it’s mayhem with hundreds of zebras and wildebeest splashing into the river.

Late evening photo session at the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Its 10,000 torii gates cast criss-crossing shadows into the night.

This Shinto shrine has a very mystical quality, especially when it’s pitch dark, with no people around. Perfect for long 20-second exposures to capture the light and the shadows. Or “light painting” with a flashlight. 

That’s me brandishing a lightsaber and painting with it  Now imagine this as a Star Wars location for a fight scene. 

In between sets of Torii Gates, there are family shrines which are even more special, complete with miniature Torii, candlesticks and kitsune.

Snow is falling, it’s ethereal, and the shrine’s spirits are no doubt watching.
