Step into a Kurdish family home in Istanbul for an intimate Dengbej storytelling and dinner experience. Dengbej is a traditional Kurdish music style where singers recount epic tales of history, love, and loss using only their voices in an a cappella-style performance. You’ll start with a neighborhood walk, getting to know the local Kurdish community, before gathering around the family table for a home-cooked Kurdish dinner, prepared by the host’s mother.

As you tuck into your meal, a professional singer will perform a variety of Dengbej songs that convey the struggles and resilience of the Kurdish people, reflecting their historical, social, and cultural experiences. Once forbidden during periods of repression in Turkey, Dengbej has survived through clandestine performances and oral transmission. This experience allows you to delve into the origins and nuances of this vibrant art form while hearing the stories of a Kurdish family based in Istanbul.

This experience offers a rare chance to engage with Dengbej storytelling in a private Kurdish home, surrounded by warmth and hospitality. Your host, Baver, and his family will welcome you into their home, where professional Dengbej singer Xalide, from a lineage of Dengbej singers, brings this tradition to life.

Dengbej is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, dating back thousands of years. Despite centuries of suppression, it remains a vital record of Kurdish history and identity. Each song recounts tales of love, battles, and farewells, blending spoken word and melody. To add to the experience, Baver may sometimes accompany the singer with his Saz, a traditional string instrument from Turkey. To complete the evening, Baver’s mother will prepare a traditional Kurdish dinner, so guests can hear the stories of Kurdish culture but also taste its rich culinary heritage.

This experience is hosted by Barış Baver and his Kurdish family, who warmly welcome guests into their home for an evening of storytelling, music, and food. Baver, an entrepreneur and cultural curator, is passionate about preserving Turkish and Kurdish traditions. He grew up immersed in Kurdish heritage, learning from his mother’s culinary wisdom and local traditions. His home has become a space where travelers can experience authentic Kurdish hospitality, sharing meals, stories, and culture in an intimate setting.

As part of this experience, Baver and his family invite Xalide, a professionally trained Dengbej singer from a lineage of performers, to bring this rare storytelling tradition to life. She will guide you through the meaning behind each song—whether a tale of love, exile, or celebration—offering insight into this ancient oral art. Japan

Sanja Matsuri has roots dating back to the 7th century and is considered one of the largest and wildest festivals in Japan. It’s a rare opportunity to capture locals outside of everyday Japanese life — expressive, celebratory, and fully immersed in tradition.

Held on the third weekend of May every year (May 15-17 in 2026) at Asakusa Shrine, the festival takes over the neighborhood for three full days of parades, music, dancing and ritual. At the center are the mikoshi — portable shrines carried on the shoulders of teams of bearers, who shout and sway as they move through narrow streets.

You’ll be drawn to the raw energy of the crowds, the emotion on the faces of the mikoshi bearers, and the visual richness of the traditional wear — from happi coats to tabi socks. The festival offers a sense of controlled chaos that makes for powerful street photography and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture in motion.

This workshop immerses you in the action with an expert photographer by your side to help you capture key moments during the event. Each Mikoshi — portable shrines carried by locals — is paraded through the narrow streets of Asakusa and around the historic Senso-ji Temple district, an area rich in tradition and culture.

The atmosphere is intense, chaotic, and filled with raw emotion — a dream for photographers seeking to capture movement, energy and cultural detail. He'll have plenty of insights into the culture and energy of the Sanja Matsuri, as someone who’s photographed it many times before.

Mexico

This is Mexico’s story told through three spaces within Chapultepec, the great forest in Mexico City — a journey through its origins, empires and modern vision.

You begin at National Museum of Anthropology, one of the world’s most remarkable cultural institutions. Beneath its vast courtyard “paraguas” canopy — a concrete umbrella supported by a single column — you walk through galleries that hold Mexico’s ancient imagination and Indigenous legacy: Mexica calendar stone, Zapotec urns, Mayan reliefs. 

Then choose, in advance, between Castillo de Chapultepec, former imperial palace that crowns the hill with 19th-century grandeur, or Museo Tamayo, Mexico’s leading space for contemporary art, designed by Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky, where raw concrete meets color and abstraction.

Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology is one of Latin America’s most important museums — a vital space for understanding the depth and diversity of Mexico’s cultural heritage. Opened in 1964, it preserves and celebrates the pre-Columbian civilizations that shaped the country: the Aztec, Maya, Olmec, and Zapotec. The building itself is an icon of modern Mexican architecture — a vast courtyard shaded by a monumental concrete “umbrella,” its single central column carved with mythic reliefs.

Inside, you move through galleries that feel like time slowed down. Among the most famous pieces are the Aztec Sun Stone, a massive calendar disk that encodes the Aztec cosmos, and the colossal Olmec heads carved from basalt. You’ll also encounter the intricate Maya stelae and treasures from the Tomb of Pakal the Great in Palenque — touchstones of an imagination that still defines Mexico’s identity.

Anthropology Museum

If you choose Chapultepec Castle instead of Museo Tamayo, Andrea will arrange to visit this first — so you can make the climb while the hill is still cool and shaded.

Perched high above the city, the castle commands sweeping views of the valley and stands as a symbol of Mexico’s layered history. Built in the late 18th century, it has served many lives — first as colonial palace, then as residence of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire, and later as official home of Mexico’s presidents. Today, it houses the National Museum of History, where rooms are preserved with 19th-century furnishings, imperial artifacts, and murals tracing the country’s struggle for independence and revolution.

Highlights include Maximilian’s ornate chambers, the Hall of Battles, and murals by Diego Rivera and other great Mexican artists. From the terraces, weather/visibility permitting, you can see the city stretching below — green canopy to skyline.

A guided visit to Chapultepec Castle with Andrea reveals the human side of grandeur — emperors and soldiers, revolutionaries and reformers, all layered into the same walls. Inside, you’ll explore Tamayo’s own paintings, where indigenous imagery and cosmic color meet the abstract language of modern art. Polanco is one of Mexico City’s most elegant and dynamic neighborhoods, known for its tree-lined streets, luxury boutiques, fine dining, and cultural richness.

After your morning exploration through Mexico’s past and modern expressions, Andrea will take you to a restaurant for an extensive lunch where you'll get to try various dishes representing some of the best of Mexico City cuisine.

From there, you visit the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, a remarkable insitution that preserves the experimental studio and public mission of David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of Mexico’s great muralists. Housed in the artist’s former home and workshop, the building still bears the traces of his process — large-scale murals, technical studies, and the curved walls designed for his “Polyangular” method, meant to let art move with the viewer.

You walk the line between art and activism, between creation and conviction — a fitting conclusion to the day.

The afternoon seeks to tie the day’s themes together: Mexico’s art as memory, power, and reinvention. Over lunch, the continuing conversation with Andrea helps you connect the threads — from the mythology of the Anthropology Museum, to the expression of the Tamayo, to the social conscience embodied in the work for modern artists.

At the Sala de Arte Público, you see how art left the studio and entered civic life. Siqueiros’s murals rise like manifestos — textured, defiant, and experimental — revealing how technique served belief. His workspace feels alive, the air still thick with the urgency of his ideas. Andrea Bustillos, trained in Madrid, is an art historian and currently Curator in Chief of Fundación Casa Wabi. With a strong focus on contemporary painting, she has curated numerous exhibitions and collaborated with a wide range of artists, from emerging voices to established names. Andrea Villers, educated in Granada, with a master's in curatorial studies, runs a consultancy that develops exhibition projects and advises on cultural strategies.

France

In Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the day begins just outside the village at the Monastère Saint-Paul de Mausole, a former monastery that housed the psychiatric institution where Van Gogh stayed from 1889 to 1890. Here, the fields, olive groves, and cypress trees are not distant scenery but the same subjects he painted again and again, within walking distance of his room. The visit stays grounded in this close relationship between the artist and the landscape that shaped his work.

After lunch, you continue to Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that opens onto a very different setting. The route follows the city through its main landmarks, from the Amphitheatre and the Théâtre Antique to Place du Forum, Saint-Trophime Cathedral, Hôtel de Ville, and the Hôtel Dieu garden, passing through streets and squares along the way. Roman remains, later buildings, and places linked to Van Gogh are all part of this urban fabric, seen through a continuous narrative rather than as isolated monuments.

The experience brings together two places that marked consecutive chapters in Van Gogh’s life in Provence. In Arles, you encounter the city where he arrived in 1888, drawn by its light, its streets, the intensity of urban life, and where he produced some of his most important work. In Saint-Rémy, you enter the quieter landscape that followed at the Monastère Saint-Paul de Mausole in 1889, a secluded world of olive groves, cypress trees, and fields.

Spain

This is a visit to the working atelier of Eli Urpí and Nacho Umpiérrez in Barcelona's old town, a space closed to the public. Fernwayer travelers are invited for an unhurried visit with the artists: a walk through the showroom, time in the studio where pieces are designed, and coffee together over conversation about the work.

As you enter the space, you see finished pieces sit alongside designs still in progress. Eli started by sewing small hats. The work has grown into a body of pieces that sit somewhere between fashion, sculpture and craft tradition. Eli talks about inspirations — traditional Spanish forms, contemporary art, architecture, moments of looking that made their way into the form of a hat or sculpture. You're invited to try on some of the pieces. 

From there, you move into the private studio — an area usually reserved for curators and collectors — where Eli and Nacho show objects, images, references, and the way tradition and contemporary art come together in their work.

Walk or take a taxi to Barcelona Cathedral, then go down Carrer del Bisba and turn into Sant Server. At the end of Sant Server, you will find Baixada de Santa Eulàlia.

Most ateliers of this caliber don't open their doors. Eli and Nacho's studio is not a gallery; it's a working space where designs are made. This experience, offered only through Fernwayer, lets you spend time with the artists themselves.

What you encounter is a genuine creative partnership. Eli is the designer; Nacho is the photographer and creative partner. This is a 3-hour exploration of Fes Medina with Omar Chennafi, a local cultural expert and renowned photographer. The charming, well-preserved streetscapes of the heritage town in Old Lijiang Is perfect for getting lost  The winding streets lure you in - and shops selling Tiquanyin tea, handmade paper, musical drums, souvenirs and food vie for the attention of tourists. 

The Naxi people of Lijiang are proud, artistic and musically talented. It's a matriarchal society, one that I relate well to, and I enjoyed my interactions with the wise women I meet.

In the market square in Lijiang Old Town, groups of Naxi women get together to perform a few dances. There is no clear structure for their activity, and the women seem to be on their own schedule - some leave after a couple of dances, others hang around. Besides their traditional costume, what is common among them is their energy and zest for life.

Lost in Old Lijiang

La Scala in Milan is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. It’s a symbol of cultural and historical opulence. Since its opening in 1778, it has been a hallowed ground for opera and ballet, drawing aficionados from around the world. What to look for when visiting:
1 - Since its commission by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, La Scala has been a focal point for Italian opera. Designed by Piermarini, it has premiered works of legendary composers like Bellini and Verdi, and hosted luminaries such as Nureyev and Callas. La Scala's inaugural performance in 1778 was marked by an incident where the chandelier crashed to the ground, fortunately without causing injuries. This dramatic start did not hinder its rise to prominence as a central figure in Milanese culture.

2 - The theater has undergone various renovations that improved acoustics and seating. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior of La Scala is a blend of neoclassical style and modern comforts, with the individual boxes once decorated according to the owner's tastes. The auditorium is adorned with plush red velvet and gilded accents.

3 - Renowned for its near-perfect acoustics, La Scala is a challenging yet prestigious stage for the world’s most talented performers. The acoustics are so fine-tuned that even the type of rope used backstage is chosen for its sound qualities. La Scala was also a pioneer in lighting technology, being the first building in Milan to have electric lights. 

4 - The La Scala Museum, part of the opera house, offers insights into its rich history and is included in the tour of the opera house. It’s a trove of operatic history, showcasing costumes, set designs, and rare artifacts. It provides a deeper understanding of the theater's impact on the arts.

Tickets should be booked well in advance, especially for popular performances. The upper gallery seats offer a great view and acoustics at a lower price.

Jake’s is a Jamaican treasure. In fact, where it’s located is actually called Treasure Beach. 

Getting there from Montego Bay Airport takes a full two and a half hours on rough country roads - more than three if you stop at the jerk chicken place as we did. We stayed in a colorful bohemian cottage on the sea and tasted our first Ackee and Codfish - Jamaica’s breakfast dish - here. 

The evenings are for crooning to live music - reggae or calypso — before falling asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks literally at your feet.

The square and church offer excellent photo opportunities with their vibrant atmosphere and stunning architecture.

Ljubljana Castle (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM). Take the funicular ride to Ljubljana Castle for sunset. Capture panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Alps. The castle offers sweeping landscapes and intricate architectural details. The walk from the castle to Metelkova Mesto, including the cable car ride, can take around 20-30 minutes considering all waits and walking distances.

Metelkova Mesto (6:15 PM - 7:00 PM). End your day at Metelkova Mesto, an autonomous cultural center known for its vibrant street art and alternative scene. Capture the colorful murals and the lively atmosphere, and include the unique architecture and artistic details of the area.

Photo Walk 2: Ljubljana

Self-drive tour along the west coast of Lagos, where rugged cliffs meet turquoise waters and pristine nature awaits. This journey will take you through stunning coastal landscapes, culminating in a visit to the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. 

Highlights:

1. Begin your drive with a stop at Ponta da Piedade, an iconic collection of sandstone cliffs just outside Lagos. The dramatic formations, sculpted by centuries of wind and waves, create an unforgettable view over the Atlantic. For an up-close experience, consider a boat tour through its grottoes and sea arches, or take the cliff-top path for spectacular panoramas.

2. Head northwest toward Praia do Amado, one of the Algarve’s best beaches for surfing. Known for its rolling waves and unspoiled shores, Amado attracts surfers and sunbathers from around the world. 

3. Continue into this expansive nature park, which stretches from the Algarve to the Alentejo region. This protected area is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare coastal plants and nesting seabirds. Drive along the coastal roads, stopping at viewpoints to soak in views.

4. Conclude your tour at Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. Known as “the End of the World” in medieval times, the cape boasts a windswept cliffside view and a historic lighthouse that guides ships through these fabled waters. Arrive at sunset for a stunning display.
