Morocco

This is a moderately challenging private trek to the revered Muslim shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, starting from Imlil. This trek takes you through the traditional village of Aremd and ascends to 2350m (7710ft) at Sidi Chamarouch, positioned by a picturesque waterfall. 

While the shrine itself is not accessible to non-Muslims, the area around it offers a peaceful reflective spot for a picnic and stunning views across the Atlas Mountains and up towards the summit of Toubkal. Overall, the Sidi Chamarouch trek offers a profound glimpse into the Amazigh (Berber) spirituality, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural tapestry.  

On this trek, you'll follow the same scenic route both to and from Sidi Chamarouch as it's part of the trail leading to the Toubkal Summit. Corn has been a core element of the Mexican diet for thousands of years. Archaeologists have found maize cobs dating back to 4300 BC. Traditionally, the ingredient represented sustenance, fertility, and ancestral wisdom.

In this food workshop, you'll discover why corn is a much more diverse plant than you might imagine. You will also learn, hands-on, using traditional tools and the Nixtamal process, how to transform this magical ingredient into a tortilla.

After making your own quesadilla and salsa, you'll take a brief walk through the neighborhood and enjoy a couple of taquería pit stops. To conclude, you will become more closely acquainted with mezcal, a spirit made from agave (a plant the Mexica called Metl, or the tree of wonders), the other essential plant of the region. The ceremonies of Holy Week date back to the Middle Ages and are linked to the Spanish liturgy, as Spaniards dominated the island for a long time.

Joining the procession, you will observe symbols of faith and the emotional participation of the inhabitants. 

Bosa’s Easter celebration reaches its emotional peak with S’Incontru (The Encounter), a procession that takes place at dawn on Easter Sunday. Two separate processions begin their solemn journey—one carrying the statue of the Risen Christ, the other bearing the Virgin Mary dressed in black. As they wind through the town's narrow, historic streets, led by locals in traditional Sardinian attire, the atmosphere builds with anticipation. The climax unfolds in Bosa’s main square, where the statues meet in a symbolic reunion. 

At this profound moment, Mary’s black cloak is replaced with a bright blue mantle, representing the end of mourning and the joy of resurrection. At first glance, a peka seems like such a simple accessory – a domed lid shaped like a dome. Food cooked under peka, be it in a fireproof pot under the coals or directly on a stone slab, is a hearty meat and vegetable dish. Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

In the mist-covered Blue Mountains of Jamaica lies the enchanting Holywell Park, a hidden gem that whispers stories of nature's wonders. Amidst the lush greenery, we embarked on a long walk with a local guide, seeking tranquility. We wandered through the verdant trails, each turn unveiling a canvas of vibrant ferns, towering trees, and melodious bird songs that filled the air.

Holywell Recreational Park, situated about 3,000 feet above sea level and roughly an hour's drive from Kingston, is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The park, part of the Blue and John Crow Mountains, is a lush sanctuary that boasts several species of ferns among other flora like wild raspberries, cheeseberries, epiphytes, nasturtiums, impatients, and notable trees including the Blue Mahoe (Jamaica’s national tree), Caribbean Pine, and Milkwood. The park also supports various species of endemic birds. It offers a range of trails with varying difficulties, from easy to moderate, and can take anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes to complete, providing an immersive nature experience amidst the cooler mountain temperatures.

Highlights from the photo-hike: ☀️Awe-inspiring view of Loch Cleat (above). 💦 Scrambling over the steep cliffs on springy heather. 🐾 Checking out the structures that have been named — The Needle, The Prison, The Table — and naming those that haven’t. ⚡️Noting the exact moment when the weather turns on us. ❄️ Getting shrouded in mist and fog, and unwittingly playing hide-and-seek at the top of the ridge (this is, after all, where locals hid their sheep from raiding Vikings). 💨 Howling winds over 50 mph trying to gust us off the slopes. 💧Rain coming down in full force. ☁️ Feeling my spine tingle as clouds swirl around me in this unreal landscape.

Cinematic Drama

Granada's Jewish and Gypsy neighborhoods, the Realejo and Sacromonte districts, are two of the most culturally significant and historically rich areas of the city. Both neighborhoods offer a unique look into the diverse heritage that shaped Granada, with the Realejo reflecting the city’s Sephardic Jewish history, and Sacromonte being the heart of Granada’s Gypsy (Roma) culture and the birthplace of the passionate Zambra flamenco style.

Highlights of Realejo (Jewish Quarter):

1. Historical Streets: The Realejo neighborhood, once known as Garnata al-Yahud, was the vibrant Jewish quarter of Granada before the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain. Its narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses retain much of their medieval charm, making it a fascinating area to explore.

2. Carmen de los Mártires: One of the most beautiful Carmen-style gardens in Granada, offering peaceful surroundings and stunning views of the Alhambra and the city.

Highlights of Sacromonte (Gypsy Quarter):

1. Cuevas (Caves) of Sacromonte: The cave houses of Sacromonte, dug into the hillside, are the hallmark of this Gypsy neighborhood. Many of these caves are still inhabited and have been converted into flamenco tablaos, where visitors can experience the raw passion of Zambra.

2. Sacromonte Abbey: Perched on the hillside, this abbey offers a glimpse into both religious and cultural history. The abbey complex includes underground caves where early Christians were said to have worshipped, as well as breathtaking views over Granada and the Alhambra.

3. Flamenco Shows: Sacromonte is famous for its live flamenco performances. Visit one of the traditional tablaos, such as Cueva de la Rocío or Zambra María la Canastera, to experience this deeply emotional art form in its most authentic setting.
