This is an uncommon dawn capsule in Xochimilco — paddle-driven and nature-focused — you’re back in the city before the canals get busy. Private pickup from your accommodation in Mexico City gets you to the World Heritage wetlands in time for sunrise. 

You board a cayuco — a native, paddle-driven canoe — for a two-hour canoeing adventure through ancestral canals and the man-made farm islands known as chinampas, in use for over a thousand years. Along the way you’ll take in seasonal flora and fauna — marigolds and water lilies on the surface, wading and water birds such as herons, and native aquatic life like charal and frogs. 

As you paddle, your host — an expert in environmental sustainability and Xochimilco’s culture — sets the scene with history and biodiversity. Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

When she’s not taking you to the best spots in Lisbon to sketch, she works with women to help them connect to their inner wisdom and creativity to get clarity and live life more fully, embracing their artistic side. In 2024, she published her first children’s book “Livro do Não”, which she illustrated with embroidery.

You’ll begin with a short introduction to Amal’s mission—supporting women from vulnerable backgrounds by training them in the culinary arts. From there, you’ll dive into Moroccan cooking: exploring local spices, learning the stories of each dish, and preparing a traditional feast with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The cooking class is held at Amal Cooking Classes and Catering, Targa. Take a taxi to "Association Amal" in Targa. The space is located behind "COS O.N.E."

This experience was created by Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen, founder of the Amal Center—a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women through culinary training and job placement. The session is led by the on-site manager and supported by members of Amal’s original team of chefs—women who helped shape the center and now lead with warmth, confidence, and skill.

You’ll be guided by a small, welcoming team trained in the spirit of Amal’s mission: to use food not only as craft and culture, but as a path to opportunity and connection. Their deep knowledge of Moroccan cuisine and generous hospitality ensure an experience that’s as meaningful as it is memorable.

Argentina

Saddle up for a 1.5-hour horseback trek in the Andes Mountains, carefully timed to coincide with sunset. As the last of the light fades, you will return to the gaucho estate to continue the evening, socializing with the family over a traditional Argentine asado (barbecue) featuring roasted vegetables, salads, fresh bread, and local Mendocinian wine. Not only does this experience provide the thrill of riding a horse through the world's longest mountain range, but it also immerses you in gaucho culture from start to finish. A visit to Fogo Island is all about the power of culture, art and community as catalysts for social and economic change. It’s a story of the indomitable spirit of people who refuse to give up their land.

First Impressions?  Minimalist winter scenery, it’s 🧊 season, one of Fogo Island’s seven  seasons. There are wooden Saltbox Houses, that must have leaped out of a child’s painting book. Reminders of fishing are everywhere. 

My favorite part of the trip is spending time with the islanders who do community orientations and cabin outings for visitors. These are people who are proud of their Irish or English heritage (seven or eight generations in Fogo Island notwithstanding) — who sing songs and tell stories of their ancestors, invite strangers into their homes to share salted cod and tea, take you on ski-doo for ice-fishing, teach you to forage for berries and show you how to preserve vegetables in mason jars to last through winter.

Far Away From Far Away

Spend your morning exploring the charming town of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning architecture and rich history. Located about 27 km from Split, Trogir is connected to the mainland by a picturesque footbridge, making it an easy and scenic destination.

Begin your visit with a leisurely stroll through the narrow, cobblestone streets of Trogir’s old town. This medieval gem is filled with beautifully preserved buildings showcasing Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The town's layout, largely unchanged since its origins, offers a unique glimpse into the past.

Start at the Trogir Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. This 13th-century masterpiece features an intricate Romanesque portal carved by Master Radovan and a stunning bell tower that offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding sea. Spend about 30 to 45 minutes exploring the cathedral and its treasures.

Next, head to the Kamerlengo Fortress, a striking 15th-century fortification that once protected the town. Wander around its sturdy walls and climb the towers for breathtaking views of Trogir and the Adriatic Sea. Allocate another 30 minutes to an hour for this visit.

As you explore, take time to enjoy the quaint squares and lively waterfront promenade, where you can savor a morning coffee at one of the local cafés. The blend of historical ambiance and coastal charm makes Trogir a perfect destination for a relaxed and enriching morning.

Charming Trogir

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

The “French” pilgrimage route

Antalya, Turkey, is home to Hıdırlık Tower, a 2nd-century Roman-era stone tower that stands on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Located at the edge of Karaalioglu Park, this ancient structure has served as a watchtower, lighthouse, and defensive fortification over the centuries. Today, it remains one of Antalya’s best vantage points, offering breathtaking sunset views and a glimpse into the city’s rich history.


1. Panoramic views of the Mediterranean, Antalya Bay, and Taurus Mountains, making it a prime spot for sunset photography.

2. The mystery of its origins, as historians debate whether it was originally built as a tomb, a fortress, or a lighthouse.

3. Karaalioglu Park, surrounding the tower, provides scenic walking paths, shaded benches, and charming cafés with sea views.

4. The tower’s Roman construction, with its massive stone blocks and cylindrical design, offers insight into ancient engineering and Antalya’s strategic coastal location.

5. Nearby Kaleiçi (Old Town), just a short walk away, is perfect for exploring historic Ottoman houses, narrow alleys, and lively bazaars.

Visitor Tip: Visit at sunset for the most stunning views over the Mediterranean. Bring a camera for panoramic shots, and then enjoy a cup of Turkish tea at one of the park’s cliffside cafés.

Hıdırlık Tower

Winding through the High Atlas Mountains, Tizi n’Tichka Pass is one of Morocco’s most spectacular mountain roads, reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters (7,415 feet). Connecting Marrakech to Ouarzazate, this legendary route offers breathtaking panoramic views, dramatic switchbacks, and ever-changing landscapes, from lush valleys to rugged peaks. Whether you’re driving yourself or on a guided tour, the pass is an unforgettable part of any journey through southern Morocco.

1. A series of dramatic hairpin bends winds through the mountains, creating an exciting drive with stunning views of deep valleys, terraced farms, and scattered Berber villages.

2. A high-altitude viewpoint at the summit provides a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding peaks, making it an ideal stop for photos and a chance to enjoy the crisp mountain air.

3. A scenic drive through diverse landscapes takes travelers from Marrakech’s green foothills to the rugged, red-toned terrain of the desert, offering a striking contrast along the route.

4. A stop at a roadside argan oil cooperative allows visitors to see traditional oil production and purchase high-quality argan products directly from local artisans.

5. A detour to Telouet Kasbah reveals a historic fortress with intricate tilework and a fascinating past, once home to the powerful El Glaoui family.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for clear skies and mild temperatures. Driving conditions can be challenging, so hiring a 4x4 or an experienced driver is recommended. Bringing motion sickness tablets can help if you’re sensitive to winding roads. Stopping at viewpoints and small villages along the way makes for a more enjoyable and scenic trip.

Tizi n’Tichka Pass

Located in the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, Sultanahmet Park offers one of the city’s most iconic and photogenic settings. Nestled between two architectural giants—the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque—the park serves as both a peaceful resting place and a central point for exploring the city’s rich Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. With its symmetrical fountains, tree-lined paths, and flower beds that change with the seasons, the park offers locals and travelers alike a moment of calm surrounded by centuries of history.

1. In the center of Sultanahmet Park, a circular fountain draws visitors toward stunning panoramic views of both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, especially magical at sunrise or twilight.

2. Throughout the park, well-kept walking paths and benches invite visitors to slow down, relax, and take in the atmosphere of Istanbul’s most historic district.

3. With tulips blooming in spring and colorful flower beds year-round, Sultanahmet Park adds a vibrant and natural contrast to the surrounding stone domes and minarets.

4. The park’s location makes it a convenient meeting point or rest stop between visits to nearby landmarks like the Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace, and the Hippodrome.

5. Street vendors often set up around the edges of the park, selling simit, roasted chestnuts, or fresh pomegranate juice—offering small local flavors to enjoy while admiring the view.

Tip: Arrive early in the morning for the most peaceful experience and unobstructed photo opportunities between two of Istanbul’s most legendary monuments.

Sultanahmet Park

The Rua Augusta Arch, an iconic triumphal arch in Lisbon, Portugal, stands as a symbol of the city's rebirth after the 1755 earthquake. Located at the northern end of the Praça do Comércio, this arch not only marks the entrance to the Rua Augusta but also provides a gateway to understanding Lisbon's rich history and culture. Top reasons to visit:
1 - A Symbol of Lisbon's Rebirth: Designed in 1775 and completed a century later in 1875, the arch commemorates Lisbon's reconstruction following the devastating earthquake. It represents the city's strength and resilience.
2 - Architectural and Artistic Mastery: The Rua Augusta Arch is a masterpiece of neoclassical design. Adorned with sculptures of significant national figures such as Vasco da Gama and the Marquis of Pombal, it celebrates Portuguese achievements in exploration, science, and leadership. Rua Augusta Arch

Museo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure, translating to "Workshop of semi-precious stones", represents much more than its name suggests. Founded in 1588 by Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici, this museum showcases exquisite objects made from stone and is a leading center for marble inlay and art restoration. Top 3 reasons to visit:
1 - The Opificio delle Pietre Dure's origin lies in the establishment of a court-funded laboratory by Ferdinando I de' Medici. Initially focused on semi-precious mosaic work and inlays, the art form was notably used in the decoration of the Cappella dei Principi in the Basilica di San Lorenzo, the Medici family's final resting place. Over centuries, the workshop evolved, adapting to changing artistic tastes and eventually becoming a premier restoration workshop for a wide range of materials, not just stone inlay​​​​.
2 - The museum displays its collection thematically, focusing on the progression of "commesso fiorentino". You can explore artworks from various periods, starting with the Medici era to the mid-1800s. The upper floors offer insights into the craftsman’s techniques with stone samples, workbenches, tools, and production phases of intarsia and inlay work. The museum's compact size allows you to absorb the fusion of art and technique within about an hour, particularly appealing to those fascinated by the expressiveness and vibrancy of stones in art​​.
