This workshop offers a first-hand experience of all the steps involved in the creation of the emblematic tapas of Spain. You’ll see the journey of creating a selection of tapas from market to the table. You will prepare the tapas under the guidance of the chef, who will explain the geographical origin of each dish, and share interesting facts and creative possibilities for their preparation. The hands-on experience is a crucial element. Following the preparation, there's the joy of tasting the creations, paired with traditional Spanish wines. The workshop consists of the following traditional dishes: Bread with tomatoes, Gazpacho (tomatoes cold soup) – Seasonal, Escalivada (Flame-grilles vegetables), Potatoes Spanish omelette, Piquillo peppers stuffed with tuna mousse, Montadito of chistorra and quail egg, Montadito of sausage with allioli and pear, Squid with onions, Dessert: Catalan cream. The journey begins at Dimotiko Theatro Station, where we explore the distinction between Athens and Piraeus, its vibrant port, and diverse population.

From there, we head to Yiachni Sokaki, a street where refugees, rebetes, and locals once gathered over homemade food.

Next, we stroll along Filonos Street, uncovering remnants of Trouba’s past amidst modern bars and old buildings. At the historic site of the John Bull Bar, we delve into Trouba’s nightlife and its shocking stories.

We continue to the infamous Hotel Lux, once run by the fierce Carlotta, followed by Ralleios School, symbolising the stark contrast between Trouba’s grit and respectability.

This 6.5-hour, truly exclusive experience intertwines poetry, cuisine, and dialogue in a highly personalized setting in Santiago, Chile. Starting with a sensory journey through the La Vega and Mercado Central food markets, you will procure the freshest ingredients for the grand finale. But before then—a rendezvous at the former address of Chile's most famous denizen of the past. Now a museum, La Chascona was where Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda worked magic both as a writer and gourmand.

The main course of the experience is served at the home of your host in Barrio Bellavista, where the morning's haul is transformed into Caldillo de Congrio (conger chowder), accompanied by premium Chilean wines. This aromatic fish soup was the dish Neruda prepared to welcome guests at his private residences in Santiago, Valparaíso, and Isla Negra. In fact, you'll be conjuring Caldillo de Congrio Nerudiano, true to the poet’s take on this time-honored recipe.

Much like Neruda, Julio is a gourmand who delights in feeding family and friends. His experience is curated to take you through every stage of the process—from chatting with a fishmonger who has run her stall for 50 years in Santiago’s oldest fish market to sautéing the oil and layering flavor into the chowder. During the cooking process, Julio will recite Neruda’s Ode to Conger Chowder—a lyrical poem rich in rhythm and emotion that also doubles as a step-by-step guide to preparing the poet’s signature dish.

Beyond the authenticity of speaking with longtime vendors, touring La Chascona with a Neruda expert, and preparing a meal infused with verse, this experience is marked by warmth. As Julio works his magic, you’ll hear how he first discovered a love for cooking while helping his mother in the family kitchen. This immersive experience invites you to discover the delicate and mesmerizing art of Ebru marbling on fabric, a centuries-old Turkish craft that transforms floating pigments into intricate patterns. Traditionally used to decorate manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics, Ebru has been cherished in Turkey since the Ottoman era, blending artistic expression with meditative practice.

Set in a tranquil Istanbul gallery, this hands-on session begins with an introduction to Ebru’s rich history and cultural significance. You’ll observe a live demonstration by a master artist, learning the techniques of working with fabric—how to prepare the base, control the pigments, and create balanced, flowing designs. Using natural earth pigments, you’ll craft a vibrant scarf, watching colors float, swirl, and settle into intricate shapes before being transferred onto fabric. By the end of the session, you’ll take home a unique wearable piece of Turkish heritage.

Unlike traditional paper marbling, this experience explores the delicate and complex process of marbling on fabric, a technique requiring precision, patience, and expert guidance. Textiles absorb pigments differently than paper, making the final result even more dynamic and unpredictable—each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. Guided by Nesi, a master Ebru artist, you’ll learn the secrets of adapting marbling techniques to textiles, controlling color diffusion, and achieving stunning, fluid designs. Beyond the hands-on workshop, you’ll also gain insight into Ebru’s deeper symbolism—how patterns like “battal” (stone), “nightingale’s nest,” and floral motifs reflect nature, spirituality, and the interconnectedness of life. You’ll also discover the versatility of Ebru from marbled ceramics to home textiles, showing how this ancient craft continues to evolve.

Nesime Kantar is a highly respected Ebru artist and educator specializing in textile marbling. A graduate of Mimar Sinan University, she trained under master calligraphers and marblers, refining her expertise in both traditional and contemporary applications of Ebru. With over two decades of experience, Nesime has been leading workshops at her Galatart Ebru Workshop in Istanbul since 2009. Her passion for preserving Turkish marbling has led her to explore its many forms, from bookbinding to fabric design. She has perfected the intricate process of transferring Ebru onto textiles, creating wearable and decorative artworks that honor this historic craft. Through her engaging workshops, Nesime not only teaches technique but also shares the rich symbolism and meditative qualities of Ebru, ensuring that each participant leaves with a deeper appreciation for this living tradition.

The city’s gothic quarter is full of tucked away retail treasures. This tour takes you on a magical mystery tour of the area’s stone-walled squares and hidden cul-de-sacs to discover antiquarian booksellers, ancient herb shops, and art nouveau-style boutiques trading in handmade fans, candles, and espadrilles.

The tour commences on foot at the northern end of the Gothic quarter (near La Rambla) and finishes at the southern end. You’ll weave your way through small streets and squares and past major monuments such as the cathedral and old Roman walls. 

Along the way, you’ll learn about Barcelona’s medieval history, a metropolis once so productive that it was said a blind man could navigate his way around following the sounds of artisans toiling away at metal, glass, and leather.

She moved here in 1992, and started to write about the arts and culture scene in her adopted home. She is a regular contributor international design books and publications, and is still constantly bowled over by Barcelona’s visual richness. Here book ‘Made in Spain’, published in May 2023 by Princeton Press, is a rich compendium of Spanish artisans and makers.

remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

Plaza de Mayo

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. The architectural design, initially severe and medieval, concealed sumptuous halls and residential apartments​​.
2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels. The room's decor glorified the Medici family, replacing the original allegory of Florence with a depiction of Duke Cosimo himself​​​​​​.
Palazzo Vecchio, located at Piazza della Signoria, Florence, is open to the public as a museum. It offers various guided tours, some specifically tailored for families with children. The mezzanine level houses the Loeser Collection, and the second floor features private apartments and chambers, including the original Hall of Priors and the Hall of Maps. A favorite destination for nature lovers and photographers, Ouzoud offers scenic hiking trails, boat rides, and the chance to spot playful Barbary macaques. Whether you're looking for adventure or relaxation, this spectacular waterfall is a must-visit.

1. A hiking trail to the base of the falls winds through olive groves and offers breathtaking viewpoints, making it a rewarding trek with stunning photo opportunities.

2. A boat ride across the turquoise pool takes visitors close to the cascades, where the mist and roaring water create an exhilarating experience.

Ouzoud Waterfalls

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.
