This cooking workshop takes place in a scenic Indigenous Zapotec town and introduces you to local ingredients and techniques specific to regional tamale-making. You'll be guided by a member of a Zapotec women’s collective that supports local women and their community, along with your guide, who will assist with organization and translation.

During the workshop, you'll get hands-on experience with the ingredients and methods used by the women in this collective to create handmade tamales. Women Supporting Women is a collective founded in the 1990s by Indigenous Zapotec women—many of whom were widowed, single mothers, or unmarried, circumstances that were socially frowned upon at the time. In addition to cooking, the group also weaves wool rugs, producing handcrafted pieces sold in their workshop.

You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for Zapotec cooking traditions and a richer understanding of the historical and contemporary challenges facing this community.

Taking place in a social impact-oriented space, this workshop is located in a traditional Zapotec village relatively close to Oaxaca de Juárez. It not only offers insight into local ingredients and cooking techniques but also supports the core mission of this women-run project, which helps local women and their broader community.

Joined by a host with a long-standing relationship with the organization, you’ll be welcomed into this meaningful space and invited to learn more about local culture and food traditions from a Zapotec perspective.

Proceeds from this experience go toward maintaining the space itself—a safe, communal hub where widows, single mothers, and unmarried women can sell their handmade textiles, host workshops, and take part in personal development courses focused on finance, self-care, and marketing skills.

A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

Testaccio is a historic district in central Rome, which naturally developed into the city’s first working-class neighborhood after Rome became Italy’s capital in 1871. This walk explores its layered history, from the former slaughterhouse—now a center for arts and innovation—to the Monte dei Cocci, an artificial hill from the 1st century CE made of broken oil amphorae unloaded at the nearby Emporio river port.

In the same neighborhood stands the Non-Catholic Cemetery, final resting place of poets, writers, and political thinkers such as Keats, Shelley, Gramsci, Camilleri, and Corso. Testaccio is also where Maria Montessori first tested her educational method, where Gabriella Ferri sang of Roman life, and where Elsa Morante and Pier Paolo Pasolini found inspiration for their stories.

She was the first in Italy to publish a study on gentrification comparing her own neighborhood, Testaccio, with Astoria in New York. Her work draws from historical archives and years of field research, focusing on the social transformations of urban districts and the shifting boundaries between city centers and peripheries.

Peru

Explore two of Cusco’s most distinctive markets, moving beyond surface-level browsing into conversation, context and culture. Your day begins at San Pedro Market, the city’s long-established central market — designed in 1925 by Gustave Eiffel’s workshop and still serving as a supply hub for locals. Here, aisles of Andean produce, cheeses, tubers, medicinal herbs, and prepared dishes sit alongside stalls of textiles, silverwork and crafts — a commercial ecosystem where Cusqueños shop, trade and share recipes.

From there, you move to Centro Artesanal, a craft market where artisans sell and sometimes create on site. Yessika, an educator with local connections and credibility, facilitates exchanges with vendors, opening conversations for you about materials, techniques, meaning and personal stories.

Kyoto-based artist Rachel takes you on a relaxing journey exploring the breathtaking scenery of Kyoto's Higashiyama area where at each destination, she will teach you how to capture the elegant beauty of Kyoto using Japanese watercolors.

You will stroll through neighborhoods featuring temples, shrines, parks, and rustic buildings in search of inspiration, but at a gentle pace that allows you to see authentic life in Kyoto that you might miss by trying to maximize the number of highlights you can visit in one day. In fact, Rachel lets you set the pace for the day, whether you prefer to visit more locations to do some quick sketches or just a few doing in-depth sketching.

Whether it be the majestic Gion Weeping Cherry Tree in the Spring, stone-lined streets of Nene-no-Michi in Autumn, or a snow-dusted Yasaka Pagoda in the Winter, Rachel’s helpful instructions will have you creating a unique watercolor keepsake of your memories of Kyoto. She’ll also provide a bit of history and cultural context of the places you visit that will enrich your Kyoto experience.

Her watercolor paintings of Kyoto have been featured in the Kyoto Journal and her sumi-e paintings displayed in the Nippon Suibokuga Art Association's annual shows.

An experienced educator, she has offered on-site sketching and painting classes in Kyoto for over 7 years, working with a full range of ages and experience levels. Her instruction style is personalized and supportive, aimed at giving participants both the practical skills and confidence to continue creating art of their own.

Her philosophy is that by taking time to sketch and paint, whether while traveling or in daily life, one can forge a special relationship with one's surroundings and make unforgettable memories.

For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

With its symmetrical fountains, tree-lined paths, and flower beds that change with the seasons, the park offers locals and travelers alike a moment of calm surrounded by centuries of history.

1. In the center of Sultanahmet Park, a circular fountain draws visitors toward stunning panoramic views of both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, especially magical at sunrise or twilight.

1942: Errol Flynn popularised rafting down the river Rio Grande in Jamaica on bamboo rafts, made of long logs bound together. Fast forward: I'm on a raft for a 3-hour ride and sensory overload: ferns, birds, rapids, butterflies, serenading raft captain. But here’s my favorite part —

After an hour on the river, we dock at Belinda’s Riverside Restaurant, a rustic gem nestled by the Rio Grande. How does this place even exist in the middle of nowhere? Turns out Belinda and team hike a couple of hours across the hills, ingredients in tow, to set up shop each time, serving up Jamaican-style curry goat and fish (take your pick: fried, steamed, or escoveitched). Prepared with love and served alongside rice or bammy. One of my best meals in Jamaica. Call ahead to make sure Belinda’s is open on the day you visit.

Ericeira, a charming coastal village just 50 kilometers from Lisbon, is renowned for its scenic beauty, rich fishing heritage, and world-class surfing spots. Spend the afternoon exploring two of Dubrovnik's historic and photo-worthy sites: the Franciscan Monastery and the Dominican Monastery.

Start with the Franciscan Monastery, located near the Pile Gate. This serene spot offers a quiet retreat from the city's bustle. The monastery's peaceful cloister, featuring Romanesque-Gothic architecture and a beautiful central garden, is a highlight for photographers. Don't miss the Old Pharmacy, one of the oldest functioning pharmacies in Europe, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. You can comfortably explore the Franciscan Monastery in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Next, head to the Dominican Monastery, situated near the Ploče Gate. This monastery, with its impressive Gothic-Renaissance style, houses a stunning collection of art and artifacts. The cloister, adorned with arches and lush greenery, provides a perfect setting for reflection and photography. The monastery's museum showcases works by local artists, offering insight into Dubrovnik's rich cultural heritage. Plan to spend another 45 minutes to an hour here.

Whether you're people-watching, enjoying a mint tea, or soaking in the lively atmosphere, Moulay Hassan Square perfectly captures the relaxed, bohemian spirit of Essaouira.

Moulay Hassan Square

Joshua Tree National Park | United States

Forty-five minutes from Palm Springs – or a slightly longer, two hours from Los Angeles - in California’s southernmost Joshua Tree National Park, I’m waiting at the Visitor Center to buy my park pass, and it’s clear that the most commonly asked question of the rangers in this Park is - “Why is it called a Joshua Tree?"

Turns out the giant, branching yucca’s shape reminded early Mormon settlers of a story in which the Prophet Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky. “A good Joshua Tree will be really thick, with arms sticking out like they’re wearing furry sleeves.” – From The Bulletin, in a 1987 article, 7 years before the trees got themselves their own National Park. 

No two Joshua Trees are alike – for that would be too boring. Instead, they defiantly withstand the desert conditions and stretch out in weird and wonderful ways.
