This is an uncommon dawn capsule in Xochimilco — paddle-driven and nature-focused — you’re back in the city before the canals get busy. Private pickup from your accommodation in Mexico City gets you to the World Heritage wetlands in time for sunrise. 

You board a cayuco — a native, paddle-driven canoe — for a two-hour canoeing adventure through ancestral canals and the man-made farm islands known as chinampas, in use for over a thousand years. Along the way you’ll take in seasonal flora and fauna — marigolds and water lilies on the surface, wading and water birds such as herons, and native aquatic life like charal and frogs. 

As you paddle, your host — an expert in environmental sustainability and Xochimilco’s culture — sets the scene with history and biodiversity. You’ll pause in a lagoon to experience a beautiful sunrise while enjoying a tea or coffee and amaranth cookies (sesame, flaxseed, sunflower seeds), then continue the route before transferring back to the city. 

First built millennia ago, these canals open a direct window onto Mexico City’s pre-colonial landscape. Most visitors meet Xochimilco on brightly painted trajineras with loudspeakers and drinks; you travel in a low cayuco, close to the water, with birdsong instead. In 1953, Shoghi Effendi, guardian of the Bahá'í Faith, envisioned a temple to unite a continent. By 2016, this dream crystallized into the Mother Temple of South America—and today this is the first stop on your one-day odyssey of Santiago de Chile.

Nestled beside the 18th-century San Vicente Ferrer Church in Santiago's Los Condes district, this enclave of 200 workshops hums with the legacy of Mapuche metalsmiths, colonial leather workers, and mestizo weavers. 

Julio will weave you around the artisan village and introduce you to craftspeople who will share their work and stories. As this is an opportune moment to pick up souvenirs, it is advisable to carry cash (Chilean pesos). 

Trace your fingers over copper cookware forged in ancestral fires, inhale the earthy musk of medicinal herbs, and savor empanadas—a culinary relic of Spain’s Moorish past reborn in the New World.

Huelén, the Mapuche called it; "here is the place." 

In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia raised his cross upon this volcanic outcrop, thus founding Santiago as a bastion of empire. Today, Santa Lucía Hill's serpentine paths lead past moss-crowned cannons and neoclassical follies with each step a dialogue between Indigenous resilience and colonial ambition.

This eclectic neighborhood thrums with craft breweries, artisan markets, and the legacy of such creatives as Pablo Neruda whose whimsical home, La Chascona, nestles nearby. 

Julio will take you to Galindo, a beloved local institution where the walls buzz with decades of stories and the aroma of Chilean comfort food fills the air. Refresh with a tangy Pisco Sour and savor Pastel de Choclo—a caramelized corn pie steeped in Andean tradition. The Nada Gogo area of Kobe City holds special significance in the sake brewing world. Sake brewing began here nearly 700 years ago, predating the commercial production of sake by three centuries. With its refined knowledge of sake production, Nada Gogo eventually provided 80% of the commercial sake consumed in the old capital of Edo, now Tokyo.

You’ll begin your tour with an elegant lunch in a preserved traditional house before visiting three of Nada Gogo’s outstanding breweries to learn how to appreciate the taste of sake. This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Porto is a city with a unique mystique! its old buildings, colorful houses, the particularity of its wines and the joy of its people, make it a must-see.
The most exciting thing about not planning my stay was getting lost to find myself in small places rich in gastronomy, flavors that I never experienced before, local markets with the best ambient and desserts that made every minute in this city worthwhile.

The Man Who Built the Coolest Bar in the World. That would be a Jamaican fisherman from Saint Elizabeth called Floyd who thought it would be nice to have a place where he and his buddies could hang out to and from their fishing ventures. He built the bar on a sandbar a mile off the coast in Parottee Bay out of driftwood (the wood was restored after Hurricane Ivan in 2004). In between dips in the turquoise water, you can sip a Red Stripe, eat freshly grilled snapper and play dominoes. Or catch up with Floyd at the bar. Someday, I’d like to watch the sunset from there.

Paşabağ, also known as Monks Valley, is home to Cappadocia’s most striking fairy chimneys, where centuries-old hermit cells and chapels add a spiritual dimension to the surreal landscape.

Rome from the Sky

Valencia, Spain, is home to Gulliver Park (Parque Gulliver), a one-of-a-kind playground where visitors of all ages can experience the world as a Lilliputian. Inspired by Gulliver’s Travels, the park features a massive 70-meter-long sculpture of Gulliver, sprawled across the ground as if captured by tiny Lilliputians. With giant slides, tunnels, ramps, and climbing areas integrated into the structure, this whimsical attraction offers endless fun for families, kids, and anyone young at heart.

1. The giant Gulliver sculpture, complete with slides and climbing areas, allows visitors to explore the character’s arms, legs, and even his coat as if they were tiny Lilliputians.

Gulliver Park

Jake’s is a Jamaican treasure. In fact, where it’s located is actually called Treasure Beach. 

Getting there from Montego Bay Airport takes a full two and a half hours on rough country roads - more than three if you stop at the jerk chicken place as we did. We stayed in a colorful bohemian cottage on the sea and tasted our first Ackee and Codfish - Jamaica’s breakfast dish - here. 

The evenings are for crooning to live music - reggae or calypso — before falling asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks literally at your feet.
