Immerse yourself in the fragrant world of an aromatic and medicinal herbs farm nestled in the picturesque region of Alentejo, Portugal. This experience invites you to explore the sustainable practices of organic farming and gain insights into the use of Portuguese aromatic herbs. The farm is home to a century-old olive grove and more than 45 plant species, each with unique gastronomical and medicinal properties. 

Rute and João will teach you all about traditional harvesting and drying techniques, plucking herbs straight from the garden to smell, taste and make art with. After the farm tour, you’ll join a Cyanotype printmaking workshop (or similar activity in winter) allowing you to take home your own herbarium. Then sit down for a multi-course lunch based on traditional Alentejo recipes under a shady ash tree or in the cozy greenhouse.

The visit will begin by explaining the organic production method and the agricultural practices used in the farm. As visitors stroll by, they are invited to collect plants to smell and taste, whilst Rute talks about its medicinal properties and culinary uses. After touring the garden, we will visit the natural drying greenhouse, the plant processing room and finally the packaging and storage area. Then, the visitor will learn how to make a herbarium using the Cyanotype technique (or similar activity in winter). Afterwards, there will be a tasting in the middle of the field in a shady spot, of all the products produced on the farm. Fresh aromatic infusions, goat cheese from Alentejo with our endemic thyme (accompanied by our typical Alentejo bread), our honey, our Extra Virgin Olive Oil and our Penny royal or Lemon grass liqueurs.

Discover the vibrant world of natural dyeing, a craft that has been integral to Turkish textile production for centuries. This hands-on experience begins with a brief introduction to the history of Turkish textiles, focusing on the symbolic meanings of colors and patterns that have been passed down through generations. You’ll learn how dyes were traditionally sourced from plants, minerals, and insects, with shades of red, blue, and gold holding particular significance in Turkish culture. After exploring the cultural importance of these colors, the workshop transitions to a practical demonstration where you’ll create your own naturally dyed fabric.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”

It’s Halloween time in Beacon Hill in Boston. After much consideration, I decide that I am too old to collect candy from my generous neighbors.

So I pick up my camera instead and wander through Boston’s most historic neighborhood to celebrate its annual Halloween tradition.

Since the 1970s, this is one day when the charming tree-lined streets of Beacon Hill get packed ..
 
.. with costumed pets and people, infants dressed as pumpkins to the elderly dressed in traditional witching gear.

Watch out for the brooms. 

I run into a friend dressed up as Jamie Lannister from the Game of Thrones, complete with chopped arm hanging around his neck.

There’s a dog dressed up as a skunk.

Beacon Hill has the perfect Halloween atmosphere with the wrought iron, cobblestones, narrow alleys and seriously all-out decoration.

So, trick or treat?

This city known for its wine is just gorgeous. Though hot in summer, it is stunning! Definitely worth a visit and if you have time the surroundings small town also known for their wine. 

In Bordeaux, be sure to walk down rue sainte Catherine, the longest pedestrian street in Europe! There will be plenty of shopping to do, and the main square with the cathedral is also a must see. The bell tower is not attached to the church and is able to be climbed for gorgeous views.
