This full-day experience takes place in a suburban area on the outskirts of Lima, where you will spend the day connecting with community residents and social projects. Among these, you will visit a cooperative of artisans in their workshop to learn how Limeños and Limeñas are preserving the value of traditional handicrafts and the importance of Fair Trade. You will also visit a community garden and learn how its crops are used to produce teas and herbal remedies.

Over a relaxed, home-cooked lunch in the home of a local family, you will have the opportunity to hear about everyday life in this sometimes harsh environment. The afternoon is spent with a grassroots social project, experiencing firsthand how locals are working to improve their community. Your host, Alfredo, will populate the day with historical, political, and cultural insights while facilitating meaningful encounters with individuals you would not otherwise cross paths with on a typical Lima itinerary.

This full-day outing is a grounding experience focused on cultural immersion and social impact. Through your host, Alfredo, you will cultivate an understanding of how the people of Lima are working hard for positive change — preserving traditional crafts, maintaining family-owned businesses, and putting heart and soul into social projects that benefit the entire community and create opportunities for children and adolescents to flourish.

Argentina

Saddle up for a 1.5-hour horseback trek in the Andes Mountains, carefully timed to coincide with sunset. As the last of the light fades, you will return to the gaucho estate to continue the evening, socializing with the family over a traditional Argentine asado (barbecue) featuring roasted vegetables, salads, fresh bread, and local Mendocinian wine. After dinner, gather around the bonfire with a glass of wine and enjoy a brief folk guitar session—a traditional gaucho touch that brings the night to life under a sky heavy with stars.

This experience includes pickup and return to your hotel in the city of Mendoza. Upon arrival at the mountain ranch, you’ll get acquainted with your horse and receive a brief safety lesson—novices through to experienced riders are accommodated. Your bilingual gaucho guide will lead the way into the mountains at a leisurely pace, stopping to savor the wild landscapes and capture photos along the way.

The French often refer to the Nazi Occupation of France as “the dark years,” not least because of the Vichy government’s complicity in genocide. Walking through Paris and stopping at interpretive remnants of the Second World War — commemorative street placards, sites across the city, and traces embedded in public memory — this experience explores the narratives of bravery, complicity, and collaboration that emerged during the occupation, and the moral fractures revealed between 1940 and 1944.

Led by a novelist and expert in Holocaust Studies, the experience combines historical context with literary insight, drawing on the history of fascism and the psychology of genocide. It examines the Nazi occupation of Paris and how this period has been remembered, misremembered, and mythologized within the city.

The walk concludes in the Latin Quarter, where the conversation continues over a drink, allowing time to reflect on history, memory, and the lasting imprint of this period on Paris.

Being guided by Samuél Lopez Barrantes is what sets this experience apart. With an MA in the psychology of genocide and an MFA focused on the invention of historical narratives, his approach to the Nazi occupation of Paris goes beyond the surface of monuments and plaques. It explicitly draws on narrative theory, psychology, and storytelling to examine memory and meaning.

With a focus on the historical context of Nazism and the complex narratives surrounding the French Resistance, the experience revisits how this period is commonly understood, grounding discussion in evidence, place, and lived consequence rather than mythology. His approach invites participants to sit with ambiguity rather than resolution, and to consider how history is carried forward.

Samuél Lopez-Barrantes is a novelist and musician with an MFA in Creative Writing (dissertation: History Is Dead, Long Live History! Postmodernism and Historiographic Metafiction) and an MA in Holocaust Studies (dissertation: The Humanness of Cruelty: Viktor Frankl, Alfred Adler, and the Psychology of Genocide).

He taught creative writing at the Sorbonne for five years before focusing on writing and leading historical walks on modernism, existentialism, and the Nazi Occupation of Paris. His first novel, Slim and the Beast, shares its name with his indie rock band, which has played extensively across Europe. His second novel, The Requisitions, is a work of historical metafiction set in Nazi-occupied Poland.

He is a board member and fiction editor at SOUVENIR Magazine, an arts and literature publication co-founded with his wife, photographer Augusta Sagnelli.

Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

When she’s not taking you to the best spots in Lisbon to sketch, she works with women to help them connect to their inner wisdom and creativity to get clarity and live life more fully, embracing their artistic side. Mexico

This cooking workshop takes place in a scenic Indigenous Zapotec town and introduces you to local ingredients and techniques specific to regional tamale-making. You'll be guided by a member of a Zapotec women’s collective that supports local women and their community, along with your guide, who will assist with organization and translation.

During the workshop, you'll get hands-on experience with the ingredients and methods used by the women in this collective to create handmade tamales. Women Supporting Women is a collective founded in the 1990s by Indigenous Zapotec women—many of whom were widowed, single mothers, or unmarried, circumstances that were socially frowned upon at the time. In addition to cooking, the group also weaves wool rugs, producing handcrafted pieces sold in their workshop.

You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for Zapotec cooking traditions and a richer understanding of the historical and contemporary challenges facing this community.

Taking place in a social impact-oriented space, this workshop is located in a traditional Zapotec village relatively close to Oaxaca de Juárez. It not only offers insight into local ingredients and cooking techniques but also supports the core mission of this women-run project, which helps local women and their broader community.

Joined by a host with a long-standing relationship with the organization, you’ll be welcomed into this meaningful space and invited to learn more about local culture and food traditions from a Zapotec perspective.

Proceeds from this experience go toward maintaining the space itself—a safe, communal hub where widows, single mothers, and unmarried women can sell their handmade textiles, host workshops, and take part in personal development courses focused on finance, self-care, and marketing skills.

Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

The “French” pilgrimage route

None of my map apps seem to work. After years of relying on a mechanical voice to navigate me in strange lands, I am back to poring over paper and asking for directions. I actually like driving here! 

Except when negotiating a one-lane tunnel. Then I am terrified! Unless I have right of way, I have to duck in - at just the right moment - into one of the spaces marked M, and stay there till the dark tunnel ahead is clear of oncoming headlights. This game needs nerves of steel! There are two such tunnels to get to Gásadalur, the waterfall that tumbles recklessly into the ocean.

The best photos require descending down the cliff to the beach below. There is a helpful set of concrete steps, and a big signboard in Faroese that can only be a warning, since it has a lot of exclamation marks. 

I hold on for dear life to the wobbly rusted handrail and descend half way before I realize that the rail isn’t connected to the cliff wall! The view, however, is just perfect.

Santa Maria delle Grazie is a treasure trove of Renaissance art and history. This church complex and Dominican convent are globally renowned for housing Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, "The Last Supper," within its refectory. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, it continues to draw global visitors. Key highlights:
1 - The foundation of Santa Maria delle Grazie dates back to 1459, when Count Gaspare Vimercati donated land to the Dominican friars of Sant'Eustorgio. The construction of the convent and church commenced in 1463, under the chief architect Guiniforte Solari. Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, later played a pivotal role in expanding and beautifying the complex, transforming it into a mausoleum for the Sforza family. 
2 - The church features seven chapels dedicated to the Virgin of Graces, adorned with artworks like Antonello da Messina's sculptures and frescoes by Gaudenzio Ferrari. The church's northern side houses the ancient Chapel delle Grazie and the library, while the southern side boasts the refectory with da Vinci's fresco and Montorfano's "The Crucifixion." 
3 - Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper": This is the centerpiece of the church's appeal. Painted between 1495 and 1497, this iconic mural has endured time, including ham-fisted restorations and war damage. Exploring the Spaccanapoli district is a great way to explore Naples. Explore narrow, bustling streets filled with centuries-old architecture, local artisans, and hidden gems that showcase the city’s deep history and vibrant culture. Running through the heart of the historic center, Spaccanapoli literally means "Naples Splitter" because it slices the city in two. One of the highlights of this district is the Sansevero Chapel, a small yet astonishing space filled with stunning baroque sculptures and mystical symbolism.

Highlights of the Spaccanapoli District:
1. Sansevero Chapel Museum: This chapel is home to the renowned sculpture *Cristo Velato* (Veiled Christ) by Giuseppe Sanmartino, a breathtaking masterpiece known for its delicate marble veil that seems impossibly real. The chapel also contains mysterious symbols and alchemical elements, making it one of Naples' most intriguing sites.

2. Church of Santa Chiara: A short walk from Sansevero Chapel, this Gothic church offers a serene contrast to Spaccanapoli’s bustling streets. Behind its grand facade is a peaceful cloister decorated with colorful majolica tiles depicting pastoral scenes.

3. Naples Cathedral (Duomo di San Gennaro): Visit this majestic cathedral, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, San Gennaro. It houses relics of the saint and is famous for the annual miracle of the liquefaction of his blood, a deeply significant event for Neapolitans.

4. Piazza del Gesù Nuovo: This lively square is dominated by the striking facade of the Gesù Nuovo Church, a Baroque gem with a diamond-patterned exterior. The inside is equally impressive, with richly decorated altars and frescoes.

Visitor Tips:
Spaccanapoli’s streets are narrow and busy, so wear comfortable shoes for walking and exploring. The Sansevero Chapel can get crowded—book tickets in advance to avoid long lines. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many pastry shops along the way to sample local delicacies like sfogliatella or babà!

Pick out the must-see’s in the mini-circuit (Bayon, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm in that order), then pick two temples in the grand-circuit (Preah Khan and Pre-Rup are my favorites), and one that requires a car (Banteay Srei or Beng Melea). 

Add some climbing at dawn - at Phnom Krom and Phnom Bakheng - as the sunrises here will sustain you for a whole year of waking up late. 

Pace yourself over three to four days.
