This ceramics experience takes place just outside the adobe town of San Pedro de Atacama, in a quiet natural setting with views of volcanoes and the Martian-like plains of the world’s driest desert. A short 10-minute drive brings you to the outdoor workshop site, where host Antonia welcomes you with all the materials needed to create your own stoneware piece using ancestral Atacameño clay.

Throughout the session, you’ll shape a personal keepsake inspired by the desert’s landscapes, plants, and animals—guided by Antonia, who shares insights into the cultural and historical roots of ceramics in the Atacama region. The workshop encourages a slower, more mindful engagement with place and craft.

Antonia Del Pedregal is a ceramic artist based in San Pedro de Atacama. She has lived in the adobe town for six years, spending the past four creating sculptures and functional pieces inspired by the desert landscape. Antonia preserves Indigenous molding techniques while working with a local clay she has adapted to suit her own style and needs.

Before following her heart north, Antonia briefly worked in advertising and later as a pastry chef in Puerto Varas. Although cooking remains one of her passions, she found her true calling in San Pedro after a chance encounter with ceramics and stoneware. Primarily self-taught, Antonia draws inspiration from the stark landscapes, resilient nature, and connections she has built with the Atacameño community. Japan

Take your Japanese culinary experience to the next level in this cooking demonstration workshop involving the preparation of a 3-course, home-style meal. Far from the elaborate kaiseki meals that can be prepared only by chefs who have spent years honing their skills, Mami, a local chef and pâtissier, shows you how to create a simple heartfelt meal that you can prepare in your own home using local, seasonal ingredients. The dishes include a vegetable dish, a fish dish and a sushi - the actual ingredients change with the seasons - which you'll then eat.

Set in a stylish century-old liquor shop, you’ll also enjoy three types of Japanese sake that will be paired with the courses. As the entire experience is conducted only in Japanese, your host Eric, using his own background as a Kyoto-based chef, will explain the details throughout your time here. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into the traditional Japanese approach to food, built on harmony, seasonality and visual presentation. 

This experience offers rare insight into everyday Kyoto cuisine. Chef Mami walks you through each step of a seasonal three-course meal, explaining how the average Kyoto resident selects ingredients, balances flavors, and adapts to what’s available. A Meal that Touches the Heart

In this cooking demonstration session, you will learn to prepare three Japanese dishes.

After choosing your welcome drink. Chef Mami will give a short talk on Japanese home cooking. 

The first dish will be a vegetable appetizer, usually a boiled or tossed dish. The second dish will involve fish, while the last will be a sushi dish (tenmari or maki). These are all classic home cooked dishes in Japan. 

Three sake pairings (or drinks of your choice) are included.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Eric has been living in Kyoto for over 22 years. He first came to Kyoto to complete his Master’s degree in Japanese Art History and has worked as a teacher and translator. Since 2022, he has been running a monthly pop-up restaurant, serving Cantonese-inspired dishes. Well connected with the art and culinary communities in Kyoto, he is eager to share this wonderful city with visitors. 

This full-day photographic excursion whisks you away to salty lagoons and a traditional Atacameño town as yet untouched by tourism. Besides learning landscape photography tips and tricks under the eye of a professional photographer, you will float in a saline lake and learn the geological importance of the region's ecosystem.

The day starts at Cejar Lagoon where the high salinity carries you across the surface of the lake without needing to stroke or kick. Swimming is optional yet highly recommended. After drying off, you will visit the Tebenquinche Lagoon to study the salt deposits from the lakeside. There is a relaxed lunch interlude in the town of Toconao where you will tour its main square and side streets. The afternoon concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat in the Chaxa Lagoon where flamingos wade in the shallows for shrimp. Throughout the day, photography remains the priority. 

This is an immersive exploration of the flora and fauna of the Salar de Atacama focusing on photography. Mirko—schooled in the geology and geography of the region—will impart knowledge sharpened by years of living in San Pedro de Atacama. He will explain the fragility of the ecosystems and provide insight into why the Indigenous Licanantay people consider the lagoons and volcanoes sacred. As a professional photographer, he will train your eye to capture the smallest of details and mentor you through the stages of capturing landscapes and close-ups.

The experience also includes the option to swim in Cejar Lagoon; a thrilling experience which fosters a deeper connection with the environment and supports with acclimatizing to this parched landscape. Concluding in the Chaxa Lagoon, you are likely to encounter all three species of resident flamingo: Chilean, Andean, and James's. The pace is unhurried as you study their movements and capture their pink hues against the turquoise lagoon.

This full-day experience takes you deep into the hinterland surrounding the colonial city of Oaxaca. Here lies a regional heritage dating back centuries: the production of the agave distillate known as mezcal.

With a mezcal educator as your guide, you’ll visit unique ancestral clay pot production facilities, and artisanal copper alembic distilleries. They are owned and operated by Zapotec families, one of the region’s most prominent Indigenous ethnolinguistic groups, with whom both Alvin and Randall have developed strong bonds of friendship over the years. Your hosts and the distillers (palenqueros) will make you feel right at home, whether at their distilleries or in their modest homesteads.

You’ll come to understand the mezcal production process, from agave growing and harvesting to fermenting and distilling. You’ll do this at a handful of family distilleries off the mass-production trail, where family members take a conscientious approach to mezcal production.

This is truly an in-depth exploration of the whole mezcal production process and agave culture. Your hosts will bring an anthropological perspective to the tour, meaning that not only will you enjoy expert tastings on mezcal and its varieties, but you will also come to a greater understanding of the cultural and social world that exists, inextricably, in the distilleries (palenques) of Oaxaca.

Being fully private, your visits to the distilleries will go at a natural pace, giving you time to really interact and connect with the people you meet. This is an exploration of rural Oaxaca, wherein the true value lies in the expertise of the generations of the palenqueros you’ll meet, and the educational approach your hosts take to curating mezcal tours.

The first village you’ll visit is Santa Catarina Minas, renowned for its ancestral clay-pot distillation. At a family palenque, you’ll learn every step of traditional mezcal production: agave reproduction, growth, and harvesting; roasting the carbohydrate-rich piñas in a sealed in-ground oven over firewood and river stones; hand-crushing the baked agave with a wooden mallet; fermenting in wooden or clay vessels; and finally, distilling in locally crafted clay pots.

You’ll gain a clear understanding of why traditional mezcal production is considered one of Mexico’s most sustainable industries, and why no two batches of agave distillate can ever be identical. At a second nearby palenque, you’ll meet a young, determined woman producer who has built and operates her own distillery — an exceptional accomplishment in a mezcal world still shaped by machismo. This visit offers rare insight into both technique and resilience.

Clay Pot Distillation

Lunch follows in San Baltazar Chichicapam, one of the earliest towns to champion “single-village” mezcal — its nuances shaped by the abundance of local agave species and subspecies. You’ll enjoy a meal at a small roadside eatery, either before or after visiting a traditional palenque where mezcal is produced using artisanal copper alembics.

By this point, you will likely have sampled upwards of 50 different agave distillates. Before returning to Oaxaca City, you’ll also learn about pulque, the pre-Hispanic fermented beverage. You’ll taste the fresh aguamiel (honey water) extracted that very morning from a mature agave, then sample pulque at various stages of fermentation as it transforms through contact with naturally occurring environmental bacteria.

Here, we are also usually, and very kindly, invited into the home of one of the distiller families, compadres of Alvin and Randall. This is an opportunity unrivalled by any other experience you’ll find during your visit to Oaxaca, a unique opportunity to see how many Oaxacans really live and organize their lives.

This experience is perfect for curious people who love nature and sketching. Set against the stunning Tyrrhenian Sea along the Amalfi Coast, just 1 hour south of Naples, you’ll gather near Matteotti Square in Vietri sul Mare, a coastal town famous for its ceramics. The lush gardens overlooking the sea provide a peaceful setting.

Using grease pencils on paper, you’ll capture the breathtaking scenery while Elvira, a skilled ceramic artist, shares the town’s rich history and its centuries-old ceramic tradition. As you sketch, she’ll weave in local stories and artistic insights. Then, you’ll enjoy a leisurely stroll and a snack, soaking in Vietri’s vibrant, colorful ceramic-tiled streets.

Next, at Elvira’s workshop, you’ll transfer your sketch onto a glazed 20x20 cm tile, learning majolica painting techniques. The morning is spent with a community where many individuals hail from the Lickanantay ethnic group. You will walk alongside llama herders while hearing tales about ancient Andean life and how the worldview is upheld. Next, you will oversee a clay-making workshop before dining on a lunch typical of this region. The afternoon is spent at the Tulor Archaeological Site, learning about of the architecture, society, and life of the early Atacameños.

The experience is a rare access invitation to connect with the people who descend from a 10,000-year-old culture steeped in agriculture, animal husbandry, and the cosmos. Once a semi-nomadic tribe, this civilization adapted over the years and developed advanced agricultural techniques.

Mirko first invites you to participate in the typical day of the Lickanantay people by joining a llama herder on a mindful walk during which they'll share stories about their lifestyle. By observing the molding and firing of clay, you'll hear how a connection is forged between people and land. You'll try it for yourself and take away a piece of worked clay. 

After dining on a lunch of quinoa, corn, pataska, and herbs from the highlands, it's time for the history lesson you wish you'd had at school. Predating the Incas, the Tulor Archaeological Site is one of the oldest pre-Columbian sites in the Americas. As you walk amid the adobe ruins, Mirko will explain evidence of social organization and rituals.

They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”

Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Jamaica

The Man Who Built the Coolest Bar in the World. That would be a Jamaican fisherman from Saint Elizabeth called Floyd who thought it would be nice to have a place where he and his buddies could hang out to and from their fishing ventures. He built the bar on a sandbar a mile off the coast in Parottee Bay out of driftwood (the wood was restored after Hurricane Ivan in 2004). In between dips in the turquoise water, you can sip a Red Stripe, eat freshly grilled snapper and play dominoes. Or catch up with Floyd at the bar. Someday, I’d like to watch the sunset from there.

Boat Trip to Pelican Bar

A road trip through Spain is literally the best option for those looking for a local, less touristic experience. You can basically rent a car anywhere you want – we started in Barcelona, heading down the coast, and taking stops in Ebro Delta and Denia and other sleepy beach towns down the road. One of our highlights was the Spanish town of Cartagena – a historical hub with beautiful angled roads, traditional culture to explore (expect to be invited to some Cerveza by the locals), and history lessons about Phoenician traders, Roman soldiers, and Christian Reconquistas. If you have some days left, visiting Andalusia is a must. It's by far the most beautiful region in Spain and is known for its majestic horse breed, pristine beaches, hot weather, and super friendly culture. 
All in all, it took us two weeks to get down the coast – but you can make it in a week as well – though you might have less time to explore, sunbathe, and learn about the history of Spain

Colombia

Lagos, Portugal, offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and coastal charm. Known for its role in Portugal’s Age of Discovery, Lagos boasts a rich history seen in its cobbled streets, ancient city walls, and beautifully preserved architecture. 

Highlights:

1. Wander through narrow streets lined with whitewashed buildings, colorful tiles, and decorative iron balconies. Key landmarks include the 16th-century Fortress of Ponta da Bandeira and the Church of Saint Anthony.

4. Enjoy a meal at one of the city’s many cafes and restaurants. Sample regional specialties like fresh seafood, grilled sardines, and the Algarve’s famous cataplana stew. For a sweet treat, try Dom Rodrigo, a local dessert made of egg yolks and sugar wrapped in delicate foil.

5. Visit the lively square which is the beating heart of Lagos, filled with cafes, street musicians, and vendors selling handcrafted souvenirs. Sit back with a coffee or local wine and enjoy the sights and sounds as people pass by.

6. Lagos offers unique shopping opportunities, from handmade jewelry and ceramics to cork products and local wines. Small shops and markets scattered around the city center allow visitors to bring home authentic Portuguese keepsakes.

Center of Lagos

This is the heart of Dubrovnik, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can explore narrow streets, historic buildings, and the famous city walls that offer stunning views of the Adriatic Sea​​. Wander through narrow cobblestone streets, marvel at the architectural beauty, and soak in the stunning views of the Adriatic Sea from atop the city walls. Why visit:
 
1: Begin your journey in the Old Town by meandering through its labyrinthine streets. Each alley and square tells a story, with landmarks like the Onofrio's Fountain, Jesuit Staircase and the Rector's Palace providing glimpses into Dubrovnik's rich past.
 
2: As you explore, take note of the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings that line the streets. The Sponza Palace and the Church of St. Blaise are highlights, showcasing the city's architectural diversity and ingenuity.

Lx Factory: Modern Urban Oasis

Essaouira, Morocco, is home to the iconic Skala de la Ville, a historic fortification built in the 18th century to defend the city against maritime invasions. Stretching along the edge of the medina, the ramparts offer panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the bustling Port of Essaouira, and the distant Îles Purpuraires. Famous for its bronze cannons lined up along the sea wall, this scenic spot also served as a filming location for productions like Game of Thrones. A walk along the ramparts offers visitors a perfect blend of history, breathtaking views, and incredible photo opportunities.

Skala de la Ville

At the close of the turtle hatching season, in January this year, when only a handful of nests remained, we assisted Mel Tennant, fondly known as The Turtle Man, in releasing 54 newly hatched Hawkbill Turtles into the ocean.

The turtle hatchlings — incredibly — found the ocean on their own, with no help or nudging from us. How do they know where to go and how to swim right after they are hatched? Well, they do. Sea turtles are born with the instinct to move toward the brightest direction.

The Oracabessa Bay Sea Turtle Project, under Mel’s extraordinary leadership, provides incubation support and the safe release of these endangered creatures.

Girona is a picturesque city with a rich history, known for its medieval Old Town, colorful riverfront, and well-preserved architecture. Whether you’re exploring the ancient walls or strolling along the Onyar River, the city is filled with charm and beauty.
