Sacromonte was the birthplace of the zambra — flamenco was shaped inside the caves you’ll walk through. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Gisela Vidal danced her first tango at the age of 14. From there, she trained extensively in Tango Salon and Tango Stage style with the finest Argentinian Masters. Besides tango, Gisela has studied contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance, ballet, Argentine folk, and salsa. She has undertaken further tuition in theater and film acting, mime and clown art, and singing.

Gisela has participated in international tango festivals and major events including the opening of the Dakar 2009 in Buenos Aires. She was the choreographer and a stunt dancer for the Tango Infedele Video Clip.

During her 20-year career, Gisela has danced and coached in over 40 countries. She co-managed a tango school in Milan and coordinated the Tango Querido School in Tuscany. She launched her own jewelry business in 2018.

For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Nestled in the hills overlooking the Alhambra and the Darro Valley, this unique museum showcases the history, culture, and lifestyle of the Granada Gitano (Roma) community, who have lived in these caves for centuries. Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte

The Moroccan fig liquor is beginning to sneak up on me. Or perhaps it’s the jet lag. The soulful music of the live folk vocalist is not helping either. 

We’re waiting for dinner, in the courtyard of a restored Riad. It’s a good thing I haven’t eaten much during the flight because very soon, it’s clear that they expect me to have the appetite of a small army. 

The food is absolutely delicious, and here’s what I learn:
“Salad” is a selection of 5-10 amazing dips served with khobz - flatbread. 
Pigeon pastille is a must-have any time you see it on a menu!
Tagine of lamb with fluffy couscous - when cooked to perfection as it is here - is irresistible. 

This is followed by an elaborate dessert course, mint tea prepared with precision and ceremony, gnawa singers and a belly dancer who insists on audience participation. 

This story celebrates a series of unforgettable meals in Marrakesh - some in fine restaurants and others on the street.

Of Pigeon Pastille

Nestled in the mountains of Monchique in Portugal’s Algarve region, traditional medronho distilleries offer a unique glimpse into the production of one of Portugal’s most distinctive spirits. Medronho, a potent brandy made from the fruit of the arbutus tree (also known as the strawberry tree), has been crafted here for generations. Visiting these distilleries lets you witness firsthand the artisanal techniques behind this storied drink, rooted deeply in regional culture.

1. Traditional distilleries are often small, family-run operations where medronho is still produced using age-old methods. The process starts with hand-picked medronho berries, which are fermented and then distilled in copper stills. Seeing this process up close reveals the skill and care that go into every bottle.

Hidden in the High Atlas Mountains, Telouet Kasbah is a stunning yet often-overlooked fortress that once served as the stronghold of the powerful El Glaoui family. Built in the 19th century along an ancient caravan route, this kasbah was a symbol of wealth and influence, adorned with intricate zellij tilework, carved cedar ceilings, and grand courtyards. Though partly in ruins, its lavishly decorated interior and dramatic mountain backdrop make it one of Morocco’s most fascinating historical sites.

1. A maze of richly decorated rooms reveals intricate zellij tiles, cedarwood carvings, and painted ceilings, showcasing the grandeur of Moroccan craftsmanship and the kasbah’s former glory.

The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for pleasant temperatures. Hiring a local guide provides deeper insight into the kasbah’s rich history. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the scenic but bumpy road leading to the site. Bringing a camera is essential to capture the kasbah’s detailed interiors and stunning mountain views.

Despite the fact that in our time it is very difficult to travel, I flew with my dog to beautiful Tbilisi) This city is located in the mountains and you have to overcome many ascents, which does not prevent me and the dog from being happy here)

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

Matala Beach, with its golden sands and turquoise waters, is famous for the ancient caves carved into the cliffs overlooking the sea. Once a Roman burial site and later a haven for 1960s hippies, this unique destination combines history, nature, and a relaxed bohemian vibe.
1. The iconic caves in the cliffs can be explored for a closer look at their fascinating history.
2. The beach offers crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
3. A laid-back, bohemian atmosphere adds charm to the village and its beachfront cafes.
4. Matala’s artistic culture is reflected in the colorful murals and street art.
5. The beach’s stunning sunsets create a magical end to any visit.

Visitor Tip: Stay for the evening to experience Matala’s sunset and enjoy live music at one of its beachside bars.

Dubrovnik, Croatia, is home to Mount Srđ, a scenic hill rising 412 meters (1,352 feet) above the city, offering panoramic views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the Adriatic Sea, and the Elaphiti Islands. A historically significant site, Mount Srđ played a crucial role during the Siege of Dubrovnik in the Croatian War of Independence and is now home to the Homeland War Museum. Whether you hike up, take the cable car, or drive, reaching the summit is a rewarding experience for nature lovers and photographers alike.

1. At the summit, breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s terracotta rooftops and the deep blue Adriatic Sea make this one of the best photography spots in Croatia, especially at sunset.

2. The Dubrovnik Cable Car, a quick and scenic way to reach the top, offers stunning aerial views of the coastline and nearby islands on the way up.

3. The Homeland War Museum, located inside Fort Imperial, provides a moving exhibition about the Siege of Dubrovnik (1991–1992) and Croatia’s fight for independence.

4. A scenic hiking trail, about 1.5–2 hours each way, takes adventurous visitors through Mediterranean landscapes, offering a rewarding challenge with spectacular views along the way.

5. The Panorama Restaurant, perched near the top, is a fantastic spot to enjoy local cuisine while admiring one of the most spectacular sunset views in the region.

Visitor Tip: For the best experience, take the cable car up before sunset and hike or drive back down to enjoy different perspectives of Dubrovnik from above.
