This experience is a rare, personal, realistic look into the everyday life of a maiko — a young trainee preparing to become a full-fledged geisha, or geiko as they are known in Kyoto. Maiko train within a highly structured professional system shaped by formal rules, mentorship and etiquette. Rather than watching a performance, you’ll engage in conversation facilitated by an expert guide. The objective? To move past rituals and gain a deeper understanding of the person.

The experience takes place in an elegant bar in central Kyoto. While waiting for the maiko, your host explains how the maiko–geiko world is organized and offers guidance for a meaningful conversation.

When the maiko joins, a cocktail is served as you speak with her about daily routines, training demands, her personal story including the decisions and commitments involved. As the conversation comes to a close, there's time for photographs. After the maiko departs, you stay for a second cocktail and a brief reflection.

Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

Certosa di San Martino

Start your day with an enchanting stroll along the historic Dubrovnik City Walls, spanning 1.2 miles of breathtaking views perfect for photography enthusiasts. To escape the bustling cruise ship crowds, aim to arrive by 7:00 or 7:30 AM, as the walls open at 8:00 AM. Secure your Dubrovnik Pass online beforehand to ensure a smooth experience. The walk typically takes between 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the number of photo stops you make. For a quieter start, begin your journey at the Ploče Gate entrance, allowing you to savor the serene beauty of the cityscape in the soft morning light.

As you traverse the walls, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea, terracotta rooftops, and the intricate architecture of Dubrovnik's old town. Each step reveals a new perspective for photography, from the towering Minčeta Tower to the historic Fort Bokar. Don't forget to pause at the various lookout points to capture the essence of this medieval marvel. 

The morning light adds a golden touch to the city, creating perfect moments for photography. It's a gentle and refreshing way to begin your day in Dubrovnik.

Stroll the City Walls

There’s not much that has changed in this Square in its millennium of existence. 

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of what you’ll find: Percussionists, Acrobats, Fortune-tellers, Conjurers, Gnawa musicians, Henna tattoo artists, Food Vendors, Snake charmers, Potion peddlers, Un-winnable carnival games. 

As dusk settles over Marrakech, look up at the sky. Follow the direction of what looks like a bonfire of epic proportions. When you manage to edge past the thousands of people, you realize it’s only smoke from kebabs and snails at over a hundred barbecue stalls, staffed by some of the busiest chefs and unflappable crews you’ll ever see.

Look around the Square and locate a restaurant with a balcony. Buy a glass of mint tea and grab a coveted plastic chair at the edge of the balcony to see the grand view of the world’s largest human tableau play out below.

Glorious Mayhem

The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

Ljubljana Castle (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM). Take the funicular ride to Ljubljana Castle for sunset. Capture panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Alps. The castle offers sweeping landscapes and intricate architectural details. The walk from the castle to Metelkova Mesto, including the cable car ride, can take around 20-30 minutes considering all waits and walking distances.

Metelkova Mesto (6:15 PM - 7:00 PM). End your day at Metelkova Mesto, an autonomous cultural center known for its vibrant street art and alternative scene. Capture the colorful murals and the lively atmosphere, and include the unique architecture and artistic details of the area.

Photo Walk 2: Ljubljana
