This nighttime photography experience invites you to explore Rome as the city shifts from the blue hour into full evening light. Discover Barcelona's architectural heritage while savoring its unique food culture. Barcelona is renowned for both its cuisine and architecture, and with Consuming Architecture, we blend these two in a sensory feast. We visit 3-4 historical establishments, where we follow the local custom of having tapas and an aperitif before sitting down to dine. Marvel at the beauty of historical, early 20th-century interiors while enjoying local wines and tapas dishes. The highlight of our tour is a visit to a renowned restaurant set in an Art Nouveau-style apartment. Consuming Architecture is an experience that will linger long after your holiday is over.

We begin our journey with a glass of vermouth or cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, in a historic ultramarinos in the Eixample, recently named one of the most beautiful shops in the world. Here, we'll discuss the development of the area and its singular architectural style. From there, we stroll to another historic venue, nestled in a first-floor modernista apartment. It boasts an outdoor terrace, perfect for further drinks and engaging conversation.

This hands-on experience invites you to learn the art of traditional basket weaving from a fifth-generation artisan in his home workshop. You'll learn about the origins of his creative practice and make your own piece to take home, with his expert guidance throughout the process.

Basketry was one of the earliest crafts in Mesoamerica, predating the domestication of crops and handmade ceramics. Because this practice uses biodegradable materials, few historical remnants remain—so its history lives on through family traditions and storytelling. By learning about the skill, time, and dedication involved in creating these baskets, you'll help support local artisans through both financial investment and cultural preservation.

Your basket-making workshop will last roughly two hours. Afterward, you’ll continue the carrizo theme with a meal at a restaurant that serves Oaxacan tlayudas on handwoven carrizo plates.

These artisans are living examples of the role storytelling plays in preserving ancestral artistry. While basketry declined with the introduction of plastic, it still holds an essential place in the rural economy. But with climate change extending the dry months, access is now limited during certain times of the year. Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

This is a food-and-neighborhood experience through Istanbul, tracing the daily routes locals take every day. It begins at the Spice Bazaar, where shelves of saffron, sumac, and dried figs recall the city’s trading past. From there, you’ll board a ferry across the Bosphorus and explore three villages on the Asian side—each with its own rhythm.

In Üsküdar, snack on street simit and stuffed mussels while browsing produce stands that locals frequent. Then hop into a dolmuş (mini-bus) to reach Çengelköy, a waterfront village known for its pickled cucumbers, tea gardens, and hillside lanes. From there, head to Kuzguncuk, where wooden houses lean into each other and synagogues sit beside churches. At every stop, you’ll sample what’s fresh: gözleme off the griddle, olives, cheeses, pickles, baklava, and tea. The route ends in a family-run café, tucked behind grapevines. All my life, I called it |trom-sow|, but the locals insist on |troom-sa|. 

The drive through Andøya and Senja was so spectacular that we wanted to abandon our itinerary and stay on the islands overnight vs. driving into Tromsø. And then I would have missed a dramatic sunset/dawn. Everything - sky, sea, windows on buildings, Arctic Church, mountain tops - blazed fiery red for an hour before turning into several shades of blue, with bright pink thrown in for effect. It stayed like that all night long. 

The locals can’t seem to stop partying through Friday night all along Storgata, so the people-watching is riveting. We’ve got to sleep at some point, we kept telling each other.

You can learn a lot from indigenous rights to natural disasters through street art in Oaxaca by walking through the streets and analyzing each mural.

Colombia

El Rastro, located in the historic center of Madrid, is a flea market and lively hub of culture, antiques, and curiosities that comes alive every Sunday and public holiday. With its roots stretching back over 400 years, this open-air market in the La Latina neighborhood offers a fascinating blend of everyday objects and unique finds, making it a must-visit destination even if you don’t want to buy anything. 1. Start Your Journey at Plaza del Cascorro to immerse yourself in the heart of El Rastro. Here, you’ll find a dynamic mix of stalls selling everything from vintage clothing to funky accessories, setting the perfect tone for your adventure.
2. Diverse Finds on Calle Ribera de Curtidores: This steep hill lined with hundreds of stalls offers an array of products. From kitchen utensils to comic books, clothes, jewelry, art, and furnishings, the variety is endless, ensuring there’s something for every shopper.
3. Venture into streets like Calle de San Cayetano for art, or Calle Fray Ceferino González, formerly known for its live birds, now offering pet accessories and more. Each lane offers its own specialty, creating a treasure hunt experience.
4. For those with a keen eye for art and antiques, El Rastro will not disappoint. Visit Galerías Piquer for rare finds and explore shops along Calle de la Arganzuela for vintage office equipment and collectibles.
5. Don’t miss the chance to try palulú, a local licorice root treat, as you browse. Also, keep an eye out for performances by street musicians, adding a unique soundtrack to your shopping experience.
El Rastro is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Sunday and public holiday. To beat the crowds and enjoy a more leisurely shopping experience, try to arrive early.

El Rastro: Vibrant Marketplace

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.
