This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. By supporting this artisan and her family, you’re also helping to preserve a living legacy.

A Family Legacy in Beeswax 

This experience accommodates a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 people. What’s Included: A guided visit to the workshop of this talented family, as well as a quick stop at the local church, with full translation provided. A set meal and one non-alcoholic or one alcoholic drink per person are included. Transportation to and from Oaxaca, starting and ending at the listed meeting point, is also provided.

We recommend bringing a hat, water, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a camera or phone to document the process. It’s also a good idea to carry some cash in local currency if you wish to purchase pieces directly from the makers, though they do accept credit cards. That said, there’s no expectation to buy anything extra during the experience if you choose not to.

Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

Portugal

This walking and photography tour takes you through the soulful backstreets of Alfama—Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood. Starting at the base of Elevador do Castelo, you’ll ascend into a maze of cobbled alleys, tiled façades and sunlit balconies where laundry sways in the wind.

Led by a seasoned photographer, you’ll move through lived-in corridors and quiet courtyards that retain the rhythm of daily life. Along the way, there’s a relaxed café stop where you’ll try pastéis de nata and other traditional pastries. You’ll pass secret viewpoints, catch glimpses of the city’s tiled rooftops, and photograph the iconic tram 28 as it rattles through narrow lanes.

Alfama is one of the few neighborhoods that survived the 1755 earthquake, preserving its medieval street plan and Moorish influences. This experience is offered as a shared activity for up to 5 people, with the option to make it private. Argentina

This photography experience takes you front and backstage at an iconic tango show in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires. Hosted by a professional photographer, the activity starts with a 30-minute introductory talk in a San Telmo cafe where you'll learn about the camera settings and techniques required for shooting moving objects in low light. After this, you will walk a short distance to the theater where the rest of the evening plays out over photography, art, dining, and conversation.

Once seated at a premium table with a clear view of the stage, you will photograph the dancers and orchestra without obstructions. Dinner is served during the show, while Bernardo mentors you through the photography and shares cultural insights into tango culture. At a convenient moment, you will access the backstage area for the opportunity to meet and photograph the tango dancers while they prepare their make-up and costumes ahead the show.

This rare-access experience puts an immersive twist on the typical Buenos Aires tango show. Hosted by a globally published photographer from Buenos Aires, you will view this splendid performance from the perspective of an artist. The experience includes a workshop in photography, addressing how to configure your camera, composition, and techniques for shooting dancers. This enables you to capture incredible photographs during the show itself which takes place in a traditional tango house in the bohemian neighbourhood of San Telmo. We begin our journey with a glass of vermouth or cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, in a historic ultramarinos in the Eixample, recently named one of the most beautiful shops in the world. Here, we'll discuss the development of the area and its singular architectural style. From there, we stroll to another historic venue, nestled in a first-floor modernista apartment. It boasts an outdoor terrace, perfect for further drinks and engaging conversation.

The great American novelist and journalist Ernest Hemingway spent some of the best days and nights of his life in Madrid. Starting as a young aficionado of the bullfights, he returned as a foreign correspondent for dangerous reporting assignments during the Spanish Civil War, and later shared drinks around town with visiting Hollywood stars of the 1950s. Much of his best fiction was based on these experiences in Madrid and across Spain.

Emporio Village

Iceland

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.

Ice Caving

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is home to Recoleta Cemetery, one of the most famous cemeteries in the world, known for its ornate mausoleums, Gothic sculptures, and the tomb of Eva Perón (Evita). Dating back to 1822, this labyrinth of elaborate tombs and crypts serves as the final resting place for Argentine presidents, military heroes, and cultural icons. With its hauntingly beautiful atmosphere and rich history, Recoleta Cemetery is a must-visit for history lovers, photographers, and those intrigued by Buenos Aires' aristocratic past.


1. Eva Perón’s Tomb, where admirers from around the world visit to pay tribute to the former First Lady of Argentina.

2. Architectural Masterpieces, with mausoleums designed in Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, and Baroque styles, resembling a miniature city of the dead.

Chile’s Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), located in the Atacama Desert, is one of the most surreal and otherworldly landscapes on Earth. With its wind-sculpted sand dunes, jagged rock formations, and salt-covered valleys, this Martian-like terrain resembles the surface of the Moon. The valley’s dramatic textures and colors, especially at sunset, make it a must-visit destination for photographers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers.


1. Duna Mayor, a massive sand dune offering panoramic views of the valley’s bizarre rock formations and distant Andes Mountains.
