This experience begins inside San Bernardino alle Ossa, a church like no other in Milan. It holds one of the city’s most unsettling spaces: an ossuary chapel lined floor to ceiling with human bones, creating a space suspended between devotion and disquiet. Created in the 12th century to house the remains from the nearby hospital’s overflowing cemetery, it still evokes questions about death, ritual and memory.

From here, the walk unfolds through the surrounding streets near the Università Statale—an area layered with centuries of medicine, mysticism and intellectual life. You’ll move between old hospital courtyards, academic buildings and silent corners.

Greece

This historical walk maps Thessaloniki’s transformation from antiquity to the present day. It begins at the Trigoniou Tower on the northern wall, where sweeping views set the stage for an itinerary shaped by centuries of change. From there, the path along the Byzantine fortifications leads to the monastery of Vlatadon, tied to the memory of St Paul’s presence, before descending toward landmarks that reveal the city’s complex past.

The route descends to the small church of Osios David, where you step inside. It then continues past the Ottoman Alatza Imaret and reaches Saint Dimitrios, where you take time to explore its interior. You then walk toward the Roman forum before arriving at the Rotonda and its early Christian mosaics. Just before entering the Rotonda, you’ll stop for a coffee break.

Then the walk passes past the Arch of Galerius, the Navarinou ruins and goes toward the White Tower and the Statue of Alexander the Great.

Thessaloniki is one of the few cities in the Balkans where Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman structures remain part of everyday urban life rather than isolated remnants. Japan

Step inside a working Buddhist temple in Osaka and spend several hours following the rhythms of a monk’s day. You’ll meet your hosts - a practicing monk who also works as an architect, and Zane, who has spent ten years in Japan studying religious and cultural traditions. Then you’ll change into the traditional robes of a monk and begin a series of mindful rituals.

First, a guided meditation and the practice of shakyo: hand-copying sutras in the form of kanji characters using brush and ink. This is a daily ritual for monks, intended to steady the mind before service. Outside, you’ll assist in sweeping the temple grounds - a brief, meaningful act of service and discipline.

Midday, you’ll share a shojin ryori meal: a simple, seasonal vegetarian lunch prepared in the Buddhist tradition. Zane provides translation, insights and context throughout.

At the end of the day, you’ll receive either a goshuin (temple stamp) or omamori (amulet)—a small marker of your day as a monk in Osaka.

Most introductions to monastic life in Japan take place in rural retreats. This temple is an active religious site in the grid of central Osaka. You’ll speak with the monks about their lives, explore the overlaps and tensions between secular and spiritual paths, and observe how Buddhist tradition is preserved and adapted in a modern context.

The monk who leads the experience also works as an architect. His approach integrates design with ritual. His wife prepares the mid-day meal using principles of shojin ryori passed down through temple tradition. Your host, Zane, will meet you at Tanimachi 9-chome Subway Station (Exit 3) and walk with you to the temple grounds.

The experience is co-led by a temple monk who also works as an architect. He is passionate about blending modern design with tradition and along with his wife, who was born into a temple family, works to promote Japanese culture by creating various events such as tea ceremonies. 

Your co-host is Zane, a resident of Japan for 10 years originally from New York. His passion for learning about traditional Japanese culture and sharing it with overseas visitors has led him to close collaborations with Japanese people to share unique experiences for visitors to Japan. Zane also practices Japanese calligraphy and has a workshop in Kyoto.

Unleash your inner artist (and architect) on a 3-hour sketching experience in Chile's capital of culture. Led by Jaime Núñez, a Chilean architect and urban planner born and raised in Valparaíso, you’ll explore Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre on foot, armed with a sketchbook and pencil. 

Jaime will teach you how to read a building, understand its symbolism, and appreciate how public and private spaces coexist in a city. Along the way, he’ll share curious tales and trivia about this UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll also gain insight into how Valparaíso's unique topography has influenced its architecture and urban design, shaping the city's identity over centuries.

No sketching expertise is needed—this activity accommodates and inspires everyone to adopt the mindset of an artist. Children, novices, doodlers, and dreamers are all welcome. Templates are provided to assist with sketching.

His career took him to Brazil, where he published papers and conducted further research into the landscape of urban design. Kimono-expert Dr. Sheila Cliffe opens both her home and her closet to guests in this highly detailed, hands-on workshop exploring the beauty of kimono and the textiles used to create them. 

In the first half of this experience, Sheila will show you the full range of a kimono wardrobe, from the most formal styles worn on special occasions to casual and informal pieces that were once suitable to wear daily. She selects the pieces from her vast collection in a variety of patterns and materials, including rare and expensive weaves from remote parts of Japan. Next, you will be treated to an showing and explanation of a variety of obi, the ornate "belts" that act as both tie and accessory for the obi. Finally, Sheila will show you her rare collection of textile pattern books and hand-embroidered collars from a century or more of kimono history.

With over 200 kimono and countless obi and accessories, Sheila's personal collection is a treasure trove of antique and modern pieces. Join photographer Lee Chapman to explore Tokyo beyond the glitz, where normal Tokyoites live normal lives. Free of tourist-focused attractions, these cities within the city hold their own charm and personalities often linked to their historical origins from over a century ago.

Lee will take you through three or four distinctly different neighborhoods of Western Tokyo, depending on your pace and stamina. In each neighborhood, he'll take you to some hidden highlights and instruct you on how to capture some fleeting moments in these ever-changing environments.

Throughout the walk, Lee will share his deep knowledge of the history of these locations and give you expert tips on photographing them: composition, technique, and waiting for the decisive moment.

This full-day expedition from Lisbon to Mafra, Ericeira and Sobreiro takes you through Portugal’s rich history, architectural beauty and vibrant coastal life. 

You will start at the awe-inspiring Mafra Royal Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its monumental Baroque architecture, and the biggest building in Portugal. Commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century during Portugal’s Golden Age of wealth from Brazil, this vast complex includes a Royal Palace, a grand Basilica, a convent for 300 friars, and one of the world’s most stunning library, home to over 35,000 rare books. 

Next, in the surrounding village of Sobreiro, you’ll step back in time at José Franco’s Traditional Town, a captivating display of regional life through life-sized buildings and animated ceramic miniatures.

The Mafra Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most important Baroque structure (and the largest building) in Portugal. It was commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century, funded by the wealth coming from Brazil. The complex is organized around central interior courtyards, where the Basilica, Convent, and Palace meet and intersect. This architectural complex represents one of the artistic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Portugal.

The Mafra Palace-Basilica-Convent is unique for its scale, sumptuousness, and quality of architecture and decoration. Some highlights include the Infirmary, the Throne Hall, and the Library, which holds about 35,000 rare books. The Basilica is adorned with a unique collection of Italian Baroque statues (the largest outside Italy), six historical pipe organs, and two carillons composed of nearly 100 bells.

The building is also a very important landmark in Portuguese history. It originally reflected the wealth and power of King João V but also represents the lives of several other kings who spent time there, in the surrounding gardens or the nearby royal hunting park. King Manuel II spent his last night in Portugal in one of its rooms before leaving the kingdom forever after the fall of the monarchy in 1910, departing from the nearby Ericeira village beach.

The Cerco Garden stands on one of the flanks of the Convent-Palace. Initially designed and inspired by Versailles, only a small part of the garden was completed. Despite this, it remains a very pleasant space, featuring a century-old irrigation noria, reflective water mirrors, a vegetable medicinal garden once used by monks, and a leafy park surrounding it.

Cerco Garden serves as the perfect transition between the vast, walled former Royal Hunting area, known as Tapada Real, and the monumental Convent-Palace. It beautifully combines nature, agriculture, and gardening. The forest and gardens span over eight hectares, offering shady corners, waterfalls, and even a unique vegetable garden—Horta dos Frades—where plants were once used to produce medicinal products during the Convent’s time.

That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

In the heart of Rome stands the Pantheon, a marvel of ancient engineering and architectural genius. This enduring edifice, originally built as a temple to the Roman gods, captivates with its grandeur and its remarkable state of preservation, offering a direct link to the imperial past of Rome. 1 - The Pantheon's striking façade, with its massive Corinthian columns and pediment, sets the tone for its awe-inspiring interior. Each year, over 2 million wildebeest, zebras and antelope migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of water and fresh grazing . Experiencing this during July-October is an absolute spectacle.

The Mara Triangle is particularly great for watching river crossings in August and September - perilous for the animals as the river is packed with wily Nile crocodiles.

We stay with this herd of zebras for 3 days - waiting for them to decide to cross. It’s a matter of life and death for them - so they are understandably cautious  The zebra get to the banks more than 20 times, giving up at the very last minute, often spooked by a territorial hippo or a sneaky crocodile.

Finally, a brave zebra leaps forward into the water. And a second one follows fast. Suddenly it’s mayhem with hundreds of zebras and wildebeest splashing into the river.

It’s Halloween time in Beacon Hill in Boston. After much consideration, I decide that I am too old to collect candy from my generous neighbors.

So I pick up my camera instead and wander through Boston’s most historic neighborhood to celebrate its annual Halloween tradition.

Since the 1970s, this is one day when the charming tree-lined streets of Beacon Hill get packed ..
 
.. with costumed pets and people, infants dressed as pumpkins to the elderly dressed in traditional witching gear.

Watch out for the brooms. 

I run into a friend dressed up as Jamie Lannister from the Game of Thrones, complete with chopped arm hanging around his neck.

There’s a dog dressed up as a skunk.

A house on Pinckney Street is showing black-and-white Dracula movies.

Beacon Hill has the perfect Halloween atmosphere with the wrought iron, cobblestones, narrow alleys and seriously all-out decoration.

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

The coastal towns near Begur, such as Calella de Palafrugell, Tamariu, and Llafranc, offer some of the most picturesque seaside scenery in Catalonia. With charming whitewashed buildings, crystal-clear waters, and sandy coves, these towns are perfect for a relaxing getaway.
1. The beaches, surrounded by pine forests and cliffs, are ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
2. Coastal paths, like the Camí de Ronda, provide scenic hiking opportunities between coves.
3. The towns feature waterfront restaurants serving fresh seafood and local specialties.
4. Quiet harbors and traditional fishing boats add to the region’s charm.
5. The area’s laid-back vibe makes it an excellent destination for unwinding and enjoying the Mediterranean lifestyle.

Masaccio's 'Expulsion from the Garden of Eden' and 'The Tribute Money' are particularly notable for their use of perspective and chiaroscuro, techniques that added a new dimension and realism to painting. These works had a profound influence on later artists, including Michelangelo and Raphael.
2 - The frescoes are a result of the collaboration between Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi. While Masolino initiated the project with a softer, more Gothic style, Masaccio's contributions introduced a more naturalistic approach. Lippi, completing the chapel after Masaccio's untimely death, brought his unique touch, bridging the gap between the early and high Renaissance styles.
