Immerse yourself in the enchanting Carnival of Tempio Pausania, or Carrasciali Timpiesu, on Sunday, February 15. The highlight of this vibrant celebration is a grand parade featuring the whimsical, symbolic marriage of Re Giorgio (the king of Carnevale) and Mannena (a beautiful local woman). 

After meeting your local guide, Gianmario Pedroni, you’ll enjoy a typical lunch learning about the Carnival traditions, before joining the parade at 3 PM. Re Giorgio eagerly awaits Mannena, accompanied by the lively Tempio City Band and a dazzling array of allegorical floats.

As the streets come alive with colorful floats from both local and visiting towns, you'll be treated to a unique spectacle of performers embodying famous characters in a humorous and irreverent style. Revel in the colorful costumes and masks that reflect Sardinian heritage.

Chile

This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. There are brief stops along the way in oases frequented by birds. The morning concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat's Chaxa Lagoon, where you will encounter three of the world's six flamingo species.

Upon return to San Pedro, you'll enjoy a relaxed lunch with Valeria in a local restaurant before driving north to highland canyons and wetlands. At the Machuca, Putana and Jauna wetlands, you will scout for the diademed sandpiper plover: any birder's crown jewel in the Altiplano. While locating the diademed sandpiper plover is a major component of the experience, all birds encountered in this region have their charms. At the Chaxa Lagoon, you will have the pleasure of seeing the Andean, Chilean, and James flamingos wading side by side for the shrimp responsible for their rosy feathers. Valeria Heindl is a passionate naturalist and conservationist who has resided in San Pedro de Atacama for over a decade. While operating her tour business, she has fostered deep roots in the community. Her expertise lies in the region's natural history, from its intricate geology and flora to fascinating wildlife and, in particular, its avifauna. This is enhanced by her active participation in local conservation and environmental education projects. 

Most recently, Valeria has participated in the Flamingo and Shore Birds Survey, the Diademed Sandpiper Plover Survey, and an ongoing CONAF raptor monitoring project in the Moon Valley. In Ueno, Japan’s early public parks and Western architecture reflect the ambitions of the Meiji era. Yanaka offers something rare: a residential Tokyo that survived both war and redevelopment. The day ends with a walk along the Sumida River, with views of the modern city, a final chapter in the timeline.

The route follows a clear historical arc: from the power structures of the Edo period to the Westernization of Meiji, through war, recovery, and into the skyline of the Heisei era. Alongside you is an expert guide - part historian, part storyteller without whom the context and connection would be hard to see - connecting political shifts, design choices, spiritual sites and street culture.

You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of why a temple still shapes a district. Why one neighborhood froze in time. Why a tower on the riverbank means more than just engineering. You’ll experience parts of Tokyo that have changed little over time: the beauty of the Imperial Palace East Gardens, worshipers at Senso-ji, and the energy of Yanaka Ginza.

Your day begins where power once concentrated: the grounds of Edo Castle, now part of the Imperial Palace East Gardens. This was the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. As you walk past stone foundations, reconstructed gates, and broad moats, your guide introduces you to the fascinating story of Edo — how a small fishing village became the political center of Japan.

The gardens, paths and walls are part of the city’s origin story. The Ninomaru Garden, restored in classical style, contrasts with the modern skyline just beyond the trees. You’ll also learn how the transition from Edo to Tokyo began right here, when power shifted from shoguns to emperors.

Western museum buildings stand beside Buddhist temples. A statue of Saigō Takamori, the samurai-turned-rebel, watches over the grounds like a ghost of the old order. 

This park irepresents a national pivot: the moment Japan declared its place on the world stage. From bronze statues to tiled museum facades, this is Tokyo in the act of reinvention. 

You’ll walk past key markers of Japan's modernization: the European-style National Museum buildings, wide boulevards meant for public gathering, and lingering shrines that resisted the push toward the new. Your guide will explain how this district became a showcase for Meiji ideals: education, public space, and blending tradition with imported forms. They will unpack the cultural tension embedded in this space - what Japan chose to adopt, adapt, or preserve. The resulting cultural hydribity is fascinating to explore.

The West Arrives in Ueno

After the formal landmarks of Ueno, you turn into the backstreets of Yanaka — one of the few neighborhoods in Tokyo that escaped the firebombing of World War II and the redevelopment that followed. The streets here are narrow, quiet, and residential, with shopfronts that haven’t changed in decades. 

You’ll begin with lunch at a local restaurant/cafe, chosen for its connection to the neighborhood. Then take a slow walk through the area: passing family-run stores, neighborhood shrines, and traditional homes. Your guide will introduce you to  daily life here, and how this district became a living archive of pre-war Tokyo — not through preservation but continuity.

Now you're in the Taisho / Eatly Showa period. Yanaka offers a rare sense of what the city looked and felt like before the skyline rose. You’ll see how small temples sit tucked between houses, how cats lounge outside old bookstores, how the same shops have served the same community for generations. Your guide will explain how this area has resisted the forces that reshaped the rest of the city — and what that says about Tokyo’s layered identity. Lunch is part of the story.

You'll begin with a view from the observation deck. Then your guide will lead you on a walk along the Sumida River promenade, where wooden boats once carried goods into the heart of Edo. Set in the grounds of a French château, this experience begins on horseback, riding through rows of vines that roll gently across the landscape. Even without previous experience, the ride offers a sense of freedom and connection with the land that nurtures each grape. Back at the estate, the pace shifts as glasses are poured for a vertical tasting of the signature cuvée L’Éclat. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Certosa di San Martino

The Temple of Debod is an authentic ancient Egyptian temple nestled in the heart of Madrid. This architectural marvel, dating back to the 2nd century BC, was originally constructed in Egypt but now stands as a striking monument in Madrid's Parque del Oeste. The temple was a gift from Egypt to Spain in 1968, symbolizing gratitude for Spain's assistance in saving the Abu Simbel temples during the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Top 5 Things to know:
1. The Temple of Debod was initially built by the Kushite king Adikhalamani in Nubia, close to the religious center dedicated to the goddess Isis. It was dedicated to the Egyptian god Amun and later expanded and dedicated to Isis during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
2. Throughout its history, the temple underwent several expansions and renovations. Prominent Roman emperors such as Augustus and Tiberius completed its decorations, adding to its historical and artistic significance.
3. In 1960, due to the Aswan High Dam's construction, UNESCO made an international call to save several historical monuments. As a token of gratitude for Spain's aid, Egypt gifted the Temple of Debod to Spain. It was meticulously dismantled, transported, and reconstructed in Madrid's Parque del Oeste, opening to the public in 1972.
