This is a food-and-neighborhood experience through Istanbul, tracing the daily routes locals take every day. It begins at the Spice Bazaar, where shelves of saffron, sumac, and dried figs recall the city’s trading past. From there, you’ll board a ferry across the Bosphorus and explore three villages on the Asian side—each with its own rhythm.

In Üsküdar, snack on street simit and stuffed mussels while browsing produce stands that locals frequent. Then hop into a dolmuş (mini-bus) to reach Çengelköy, a waterfront village known for its pickled cucumbers, tea gardens, and hillside lanes. From there, head to Kuzguncuk, where wooden houses lean into each other and synagogues sit beside churches. At every stop, you’ll sample what’s fresh: gözleme off the griddle, olives, cheeses, pickles, baklava, and tea. The route ends in a family-run café, tucked behind grapevines. This Spanish celebration for the Holy Week dates to the 16th century, and blends social gathering with deep religious devotion. Solemn Catholic processions wind through narrow streets, organized by around 70 of Seville's church brotherhoods, featuring floats adorned with intricate statues of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and scenes from the Passion of Christ known as misterios. In Seville, it was tradition to enjoy these festivities from privileged private balconies owned by local families, offering a splendid vantage point. A local Seville "ambassador" will provide insights into the traditions, history, and significance of Semana Santa. Immerse yourself in this captivating spectacle for about 90 minutes to observe one or two processions.

The Semana Santa processions have grand pasos, or floats, intricately depicting scenes from the Passion of Jesus Christ. This 4-hour cooking class shares Valparaíso's culinary legacy through four dishes celebrating the fusion of Chilean heritage and European influences from when the seaport was at its heyday. The cooking experience and wine pairing take place in the home of Al Ramirez, a sommelier and street artist from Valparaíso. In keeping with the spirit of "sobremesa", the cherished Chilean tradition of lingering around the table, the experience is unhurried and focuses as much on human stories as kitchen secrets. 

You'll start with every Porteño's favorite sharer—Calugas de Pescado, a platter of fried fish drizzled with lemon. Machas a la Parmesana (baked razor clams) follow suit while a pasta dish fusing Chilean and Italian techniques simmers on the stove. Dobladitas (French-inspired bread) served with pebre (Chilean salsa) or manjar (dulce de leche) completes the experience. Argentina

Saddle up for a 1.5-hour horseback trek in the Andes Mountains, carefully timed to coincide with sunset. As the last of the light fades, you will return to the gaucho estate to continue the evening, socializing with the family over a traditional Argentine asado (barbecue) featuring roasted vegetables, salads, fresh bread, and local Mendocinian wine. After dinner, gather around the bonfire with a glass of wine and enjoy a brief folk guitar session—a traditional gaucho touch that brings the night to life under a sky heavy with stars.

This experience includes pickup and return to your hotel in the city of Mendoza. Upon arrival at the mountain ranch, you’ll get acquainted with your horse and receive a brief safety lesson—novices through to experienced riders are accommodated. Your bilingual gaucho guide will lead the way into the mountains at a leisurely pace, stopping to savor the wild landscapes and capture photos along the way.

Filopappou Hill, also known as the Hill of the Muses, is a serene and historic green space in Athens offering stunning views of the Acropolis and the city below. Rich in natural beauty and archaeological significance, the hill has been a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Named after the Roman-era monument to Gaius Julius Antiochus Filopappos, it combines lush walking paths, ancient ruins, and panoramic vistas for an unforgettable experience. 
1. The Filopappos Monument, a majestic Roman structure, crowns the hill, paying tribute to a benefactor of Athens and offering a historical highlight amidst the natural setting. 
2. The breathtaking views of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the cityscape are among the best in Athens, especially at sunrise or sunset. 
3. Archaeological and historical sites, such as the ancient Prison of Socrates, add layers of intrigue and discovery to your visit. 
4. The peaceful walking trails, surrounded by pine trees and Mediterranean flora, create an ideal setting for a leisurely hike or a quiet escape from the city’s bustle.

Filopappou Hill

Staying at the Inn at Death Valley, we thought we would be able to get up just before sunrise and make a dash over to Zabriskie Point. In hind sight, we should have woken up a good 60 minutes earlier, since the viewpoint was packed with people as we got there. 


The stunning views of the badlands slowly fill up with yellow, orange, purple and brown colors - and every hue in between - as the sun comes up, totally makes up for the early rise. Once the sun has finished painting the badlands, it reaches out to color in the Panamint Range across the valley with gorgeous pinks and purples. If you want to avoid the crowds, do the 2.5 mile Badlands Loop hike. Right after the walk, you can drive the short 3 mile Twenty Mule Team Canyon loop drive before returning to Stovepipe Wells for breakfast. 

We had been told that the Death Valley National Park is all about extremes - and the Zabriskie Point is a visual representation of that.

Painting with Light

Corfu, Greece, is home to the Church of Agios Spyridon, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks and a revered religious site dedicated to Saint Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu. Built in the 16th century, this Venetian-style church is known for its distinctive red-domed bell tower—the tallest in Corfu—and its rich history of miracles attributed to the saint. Namibia

I am in Kaokoland. Final frontier of Namibia. Home to the beautiful Himba people.

The last nomadic, herding tribe in southern Africa, they still maintain their dress and traditions. Red ochre paste for sun protection. Smoke from herbs for cleansing and perfume. Intricate hairstyles. Lots of leather jewelry. A beauty routine that takes three hours every single day to complete.

This young woman graciously agrees to be my ‘model’ - and is as curious about me and my traditions as I am about hers.

Land of Himba

The Colosseum and Roman Forum stand as timeless monuments to the grandeur of ancient Rome. These iconic landmarks, rich in history and architectural marvels, offer a window into the life and culture of one of the world's greatest empires. Key Highlights:
 
1. Colosseum's Majestic Structure: Begin your exploration at the Colosseum, an architectural wonder and a symbol of Rome's eternal legacy. Its massive, elliptical structure, capable of seating over 50,000 spectators, hosted gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. Walking through its imposing arches, you can almost hear the echoes of the ancient crowds and the roar of the gladiators.

2. Interior Exploration: Inside the Colosseum, the tiers and underground chambers tell tales of the elaborate events once held here. The arena's floor, where countless battles were fought, provides a perspective on the complex entertainment of ancient Rome. Colosseum and Roman Forum

In Santorini, we discover and fall in love with Vinsanto, the local dessert wine. So we drive up to Hatzidakis - a charming and intimate local winery - to check out the local grapes. The vines grow low to the ground and close to the road and we almost drive into them while looking for parking. 

The grapes are grown in an unusual way, not in arbors but low to the ground, in baskets made of vine stalks themselves. They are organic and are watered mostly by dew as the island has low water supply.

The tasting room is cave-like and we take home several bottkes of the small batch Vinsanto they produce.

Mexico

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the sprawling Chapultepec Park (Bosque de Chapultepec), one of the largest urban parks in the world and a green oasis in the heart of the city. At its heart stands the magnificent Chapultepec Castle, perched atop Chapultepec Hill and offering panoramic views of the city’s skyline. The park is rich with history, museums, monuments, and tranquil lakes, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers, history buffs, and photographers alike.

1. Chapultepec Castle is the only royal castle in the Americas, featuring opulent rooms, sweeping balconies, and murals by famous Mexican artists like Juan O’Gorman.

2. The National Museum of History inside the castle showcases artifacts from Mexico’s imperial era, the Mexican Revolution, and the country’s colonial past.
