Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

Japan

This dinner and drinking experience takes place in Shinjuku, the heart of Tokyo's dining and drinking districts. You'll start your experience at a tiny, 8-seat yakitori shop that is only open for a few hours each night. Established by a husband and wife team nearly 40 years ago, the wife took over running the shop on her own when her husband's health declined several years ago. A long established clientele and 6 consecutive appearances on the annual Top 100 yakitori shops in Tokyo keeps the shop full nearly every night, but also makes it difficult for newcomers to join in.

Your host Aya is a long-time customer of the shop who will introduce you to the owner and customers alike as you enjoy a full course yakitori meal, drinks, and friendly interaction with the regulars. The shop closes at 9:00pm, at which point you and the remaining regular customers help shut down the shop before heading to the nearby Golden Gai area to enjoy a few rounds of drinks and lively conversation.

Establishments like this yakitori shop, with excellent quality food, a long list of regular customers, and few seats can be nearly impossible for visitors to Japan to enjoy on their own. Aya, a foodie who grew up in Tokyo and has arranged a variety of difficult-to-organize experiences for company CEOs and other VIPs, gets you rare access to this cozy shop and an opportunity to mingle with the owner and regulars. Upon meeting your host, Flor, at La Moneda Cultural Center you will view the current textile exposition installed at the gallery before continuing onwards to the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center. These centers serve as an introduction to traditional weaving styles still prevalent in modern Chilean and Andean cultures. Flor will then take you to her go-to yarn store, the ultra-funky Revesderecho, and explain about different fibers while sharing the historical development of store items for context. The experience concludes at the Los Dominicos Craft Village in Las Condes where Flor will facilitate conversations with artisans.

Flor has curated this experience as an opportunity to learn about Chilean textiles in a relaxed context. Florencia Campos Correa, or Flor, is a Chilean-Spanish textile designer and author based in Santiago. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Flor has authored several books packed with vibrant pattern inspiration and projects. Her nature motifs are translated into floral crochet designs published in a British magazine and she has penned a children's story which inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in the youngest of budding designers. 

Spain

Step inside a historic Andalusian home that’s held four generations of stories—and now, the scent of freshly pressed olive oil. This 2.5-hour experience, led by Maria Reyes, invites you into her family’s 1909 home in Alcalá de Guadaíra, just 20 minutes from Seville. 

In a space once owned by a local priest and lovingly preserved, you'll explore the deep-rooted culture of olive oil in Spain—from ancient traditions to today’s refined methods. You’ll taste early-harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)—pressed in October from the season’s first green fruits. Reyes compares olives to people: “In October, they’re green. Now they’re golden. They change with time.” That first harvest is the most vibrant and prized. 

Taste three unique varieties from Jaén, and learn how to identify quality through scent, flavor, and color. With local food pairings and stories from the land itself, this is a living piece of Andalusian heritage.

Join a vibrant carnival buzzing with excitement! On Shrove Tuesday 17, February, the grand parade of the Carnevale of Tempio Pausania unfolds, culminating in the dramatic trial of Re Giorgio, accused of the city's woes. Thousands gather in the square as the float representing the king meets its fiery fate, marking the end of an exhilarating Carnevale.

After a traditional lunch, and led by local photographer Gianmario Pedroni, you'll cross streets filled with colorful guests—flag-wavers, majorettes, and musicians—each adding to the spectacle. Costumed performers dance energetically, their masks telling stories of tradition and playful anonymity.

Among the masks, you'll see the enigmatic Domino, a black cloaked mask exclusive to Tempio Pausania, used to tease friends or approach a long-desired love. You'll also meet the raucous “lu traicogghju”, echoing the carnival's wild past, and “lu linzolu cupaltatu”, a local mask created from a bedsheet.

This experience is very exclusive: Led by the official photographer of the event, Gianmario Pedroni, you will be able to access special areas closed to the public to see and photograph the parade up-close. As the son of a local float constructor, Gianmario shares insight into behind-the-scenes stories of the artisans and their work. Starting the tour at his studio allows you to see and hear the stories of his work. 

Shrove Tuesday in Tempio Pausania reaches its pinnacle with the dramatic trial of King Giorgio, culminating in the fiery end of his float. This captivating spectacle attracts thousands, seamlessly blending tradition and entertainment in a vibrant atmosphere.

You'll capture the authentic spirit of the Carnival and encounter unique masks, and witness the colossal pyre that symbolizes both the conclusion of the Carnival and a powerful renewal. Having a background in biology, coming to the Galapagos was absolutely a bucket list trip. The trip is worth going if you have three to seven days, depending on how much you want to see. I was there for three days and I could have discovered more islands. 

It is important to have a tour guide as you are not allowed to venture outside the town without one. 

Definitely worth a visit!

We wandered through the verdant trails, each turn unveiling a canvas of vibrant ferns, towering trees, and melodious bird songs that filled the air.

Holywell Recreational Park, situated about 3,000 feet above sea level and roughly an hour's drive from Kingston, is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The park, part of the Blue and John Crow Mountains, is a lush sanctuary that boasts several species of ferns among other flora like wild raspberries, cheeseberries, epiphytes, nasturtiums, impatients, and notable trees including the Blue Mahoe (Jamaica’s national tree), Caribbean Pine, and Milkwood. The park also supports various species of endemic birds. It offers a range of trails with varying difficulties, from easy to moderate, and can take anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes to complete, providing an immersive nature experience amidst the cooler mountain temperatures.

Hıdırlık Tower

The Temple of Debod is an authentic ancient Egyptian temple nestled in the heart of Madrid. This architectural marvel, dating back to the 2nd century BC, was originally constructed in Egypt but now stands as a striking monument in Madrid's Parque del Oeste. The temple was a gift from Egypt to Spain in 1968, symbolizing gratitude for Spain's assistance in saving the Abu Simbel temples during the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Top 5 Things to know:
1. The Temple of Debod was initially built by the Kushite king Adikhalamani in Nubia, close to the religious center dedicated to the goddess Isis. It was dedicated to the Egyptian god Amun and later expanded and dedicated to Isis during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
2. Throughout its history, the temple underwent several expansions and renovations. Prominent Roman emperors such as Augustus and Tiberius completed its decorations, adding to its historical and artistic significance.
3. In 1960, due to the Aswan High Dam's construction, UNESCO made an international call to save several historical monuments. As a token of gratitude for Spain's aid, Egypt gifted the Temple of Debod to Spain.
