Hosted in one of Istanbul’s top wine bars on the peaceful Asian side, the tasting includes eight wines hailing from the mineral-rich soils of Cappadocia to the rolling hills of Thrace and even as far east as Turkey's borders with Iraq and Syria. As you savor each wine, paired with small bites, you’ll learn about the country’s long winemaking history, the diverse wine-growing regions, and the fascinating stories behind small family-run wineries that continue these ancient traditions today.

Explore the diversity of mezcal in this in-depth guided tasting experience. You'll meet your host in Coyoacán, a colorful, artistic and historic oasis in Mexico City. Begin with a brief walk through some of the area’s most emblematic sites, such as the Capilla de San Juan Bautista and La Casa de la Malinche.

Andrea’s specialty is mezcal from Guerrero, an oft-overlooked region producing exceptional spirits. The snacks and entrées are locally sourced; family recipes passed down through generations.

The short walk roots you in the story of Coyoacán: its role in the foundation of New Spain as a place of cultural blending and mestizo history. Mezcal is part of this story: distillation techniques arrived with the Spanish and the agave, a plant highly valued in native Mexican cultures, became the raw material that made the spirit possible.

Andrea is an anthropologist by training, Master Mezcalier by trade, and a singer. She has fifteen years of experience promoting Guerrero State's mezcal culture and traditions, an area not typically associated with mezcal, but with plenty of flavors that are a joy to discover.

Andrea's own work in mezcal emerged from an extensive family history, where numerous memories and experiences have been intrinsically linked to the enjoyment of this spirit, always accompanied by good food and music. Since 2010, Andrea has been an integral part of the new narrative being woven around mezcal from Guerrero, actively contributing to its recognition and appreciation both nationally and internationally. 

Andrea's knowledge encompasses not only the specific culture of Guerrero, but extends to the diverse traditions that exist throughout the length and breadth of Mexico. She is certified as a Master Mezcalier and as a Leader in Food and Beverage Sensory Evaluation.

Chile

This full-day tour introduces you to the cultural heritage of Chile’s Atacama Desert, the world's driest non-polar desert where landscapes comprise volcanoes, salt flats, geysers, and lagoons. Hosted by Mirko, a bilingual guide, you will venture into remote valleys to learn about the Atacameños (the "people of the region") and explore a little-known archaeological site. The purpose is to connect with the local community and understand how the people of the Atacama have adapted to this demanding yet beautiful environment.

The morning is spent with a community where many individuals hail from the Lickanantay ethnic group. You will walk alongside llama herders while hearing tales about ancient Andean life and how the worldview is upheld. Next, you will oversee a clay-making workshop before dining on a lunch typical of this region. The afternoon is spent at the Tulor Archaeological Site, learning about of the architecture, society, and life of the early Atacameños.

The experience is a rare access invitation to connect with the people who descend from a 10,000-year-old culture steeped in agriculture, animal husbandry, and the cosmos. Once a semi-nomadic tribe, this civilization adapted over the years and developed advanced agricultural techniques.

Mirko first invites you to participate in the typical day of the Lickanantay people by joining a llama herder on a mindful walk during which they'll share stories about their lifestyle. By observing the molding and firing of clay, you'll hear how a connection is forged between people and land. You'll try it for yourself and take away a piece of worked clay. 

After dining on a lunch of quinoa, corn, pataska, and herbs from the highlands, it's time for the history lesson you wish you'd had at school. Predating the Incas, the Tulor Archaeological Site is one of the oldest pre-Columbian sites in the Americas. As you walk amid the adobe ruins, Mirko will explain evidence of social organization and rituals.

Italy

This experience invites you to read Herculaneum as a city caught mid-life by the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius. You follow basalt streets, pause at corner fountains, and look into shops where stone counters still hold recessed jars. Wood endured here as charcoal—doors, beams, even furniture outlines—so kitchens, stairways, and upper floors remain readable. Worn thresholds and bakeries with mills and ovens make daily habits visible, while pyroclastic surges and mud sealed what they touched.

You'll trace the ancient shoreline, now inland, including the vaulted boat sheds (known as the fornici), the site’s starkest memory, the place where people sought refuge in a last desperate attempt to escape. Nearby, the Baths show pools, mosaics, changing rooms, and underfloor heating. You'll also discover the House of Neptune and Amphitrite with its mosaic, the College of the Augustales with painted panels, and the House of the Wooden Partition with its sliding screen.

Michele’s storytelling is what sets this experience apart, as he builds a living scene from traces that still speak—soot on ceilings, worn thresholds, a partition in charcoal. His pacing is crisp and each stop has a purpose. You feel invited into rooms where routine once moved—water at fountains, bread ground and baked. Moments are shaped instead of rushed, and you get time to notice. Rather than drifting past what remains, you follow a thread that makes history legible and the city feel close.

That thread is anchored in what survives here. Unlike Pompeii, buried by ash and lapilli, Herculaneum was overwhelmed by pyroclastic flows—a surge of gas, ash, and steam that settled meters deep—so wood, upper floors, and everyday objects were sealed in place. Michele links these clues to the present, weaving echoes into today’s remains. You leave with scenes you can picture and a city that lingers after you step outside.

She comes from a long line of Sardinian artisans and has inherited the legacy of her family's historic bookbinding and printing workshop, which has been a cornerstone of craftsmanship in Sardinia for over 50 years.

A passionate traveler, Gaia has explored Eastern Europe and the Maghreb solo since 2018, drawing inspiration from places like Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Romania, Serbia, Morocco, and beyond. We'll uncover the layers of Piraeus’ rich and often controversial past, from its bustling port life to its red-light district and its role as a melting pot for refugees, sailors, and locals. Participants walk through historical streets, hear stories of the infamous Trouba neighbourhood through the eyes of a witness of those changes.

The journey highlights the origins and significance of rebetiko, a raw and emotional music genre born from hardship and resilience, and performed in secretive venues like tekké taverns. The journey begins at Dimotiko Theatro Station, where we explore the distinction between Athens and Piraeus, its vibrant port, and diverse population.

From there, we head to Yiachni Sokaki, a street where refugees, rebetes, and locals once gathered over homemade food.

Next, we stroll along Filonos Street, uncovering remnants of Trouba’s past amidst modern bars and old buildings. At the historic site of the John Bull Bar, we delve into Trouba’s nightlife and its shocking stories.

We continue to the infamous Hotel Lux, once run by the fierce Carlotta, followed by Ralleios School, symbolising the stark contrast between Trouba’s grit and respectability.
The experience includes the Cine Olympic and Blue Vision cinemas, iconic venues of Trouba’s seedy entertainment.

We conclude with a live rebetiko music experience at a traditional restaurant, enjoying authentic food, wine, and the soulful sounds of Piraeus’ underground culture.

As you set sail from Burano, let the peaceful canals of the island of Torcello take your breath away. Then, delve into the lagoon's tranquil sandbanks, where Andrea will unveil the secrets of the lagoon's diverse bird species, and the aromatic plants that have been used in Venetian cuisine for centuries and are still employed by contemporary Venetian chefs to create unique dishes and liqueurs.  You will have plenty of opportunities for photos and foraging. At the end of the tour, Andrea will drop you off near the Burano traghetto stop. If you are interested, ask Andrea about his family’s lace shop where you can learn about Burano lace, as you explore the island on your own. 

This tour is perfect for nature and photography enthusiasts, and those seeking a short yet immersive exploration of the Venetian lagoon, far from the madding crowds. 

From Venice to Burano, it's a 20-25 minute ride by private water taxi (can be booked via your hotel) or a 45 minute ride on the public vaporetto (runs from 5 AM onwards, check exact time with hotel).

You'll discover the flora and fauna of the Venetian lagoon by following unique itineraries known only to local fishermen, far from the typical tourist routes. Along the way, you'll find plenty of photo opportunities, with stops for foraging, a chance to observe the differences in various species of clams, and the possibility of seeing pink flamingos and other birds. Plus, in the middle of the lagoon, enjoy a delightful snack and a refreshing drink to make your journey even more memorable. 

Andrea is a genuine steward of Burano’s fishing culture, including employing ancient fishing techniques and gathering edible plants from the mudflats. His primary mission in offering tours is to ensure the preservation of the traditional practices of the Venetian lagoon — he and the Burano Fishermen’s Cooperative work to preserve the lagoon and pass on traditional stewardship skills — and every booking supports this mission.

That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Tokyo is a city that reinvents itself in every light. Centuries of history unfold beside glowing screens and restless streets. This three-day journey moves through time and texture — from temples and textile ateliers to neon alleys and quiet shrines — revealing how the city’s rhythm shifts from reflection to motion. DAY 1 – TOKYO THROUGH TIME | Begin your journey with a full-day guided tour tracing Tokyo’s evolution through centuries of change. From the Edo Castle grounds and ancient temples of Asakusa to the Western architecture of the Meiji era, the day reveals how each period has reshaped the city’s skyline and spirit. After a light meal and coffee break, continue into Ginza’s Architectural Icons, where journalist Toshiko Sakurai unravels the design stories behind Tokyo’s most polished district. Here, façades reflect light like art pieces and every corner reveals a conversation between history and innovation. The day bridges Tokyo’s two faces: the nostalgic and the refined.

DAY 3 – CRAFT AND CONTRAST | The final day begins quietly, inside the private home of kimono scholar Sheila Cliffe. In A Kimono Connoisseur’s Closet, you’ll step into a collection that tells Japan’s history in silk — patterns, textures, and techniques passed through generations. Surrounded by colors and fabric, the morning moves at a slower pace, connecting tradition with artistry. In the afternoon, join filmmaker Edgin Ticzon for Tokyo, Cut to Scene, a guided journey through the city’s cinematic layers. From forest shrines to the neon scramble of Shibuya, each stop plays out like a shift in light and rhythm. The day ends as the city comes alive — narrow streets glowing with paper lanterns, where conversations flow as easily as the evening breeze.

WHERE TO STAY IN TOKYO | Stay in Shibuya if you want to be at the heart of the action — a lively hub of shopping, nightlife, and energy that defines modern Tokyo. Shinjuku is ideal for travelers who value convenience, with endless dining options and quick train links across the city. Cityscapes of Tokyo

3 days in Tokyo exploring temples, culture, neighborhoods, local food, architecture, and nightlife.

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!

This is the heart of Dubrovnik, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can explore narrow streets, historic buildings, and the famous city walls that offer stunning views of the Adriatic Sea​​. Wander through narrow cobblestone streets, marvel at the architectural beauty, and soak in the stunning views of the Adriatic Sea from atop the city walls. Why visit:
 
1: Begin your journey in the Old Town by meandering through its labyrinthine streets. Each alley and square tells a story, with landmarks like the Onofrio's Fountain, Jesuit Staircase and the Rector's Palace providing glimpses into Dubrovnik's rich past.
 
2: As you explore, take note of the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings that line the streets. The Sponza Palace and the Church of St. Blaise are highlights, showcasing the city's architectural diversity and ingenuity.
 
3: Delve deeper into the history at cultural institutions like the Dubrovnik Maritime Museum or the Cultural History Museum. These collections provide context to the city's prosperity in the Middle Ages and its role as a powerful maritime republic.
 
Finally, experience the lively ambiance of the Old Town. Whether it's dining at one of the quaint restaurants, shopping for local crafts, or enjoying a performance at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, the Old Town pulses with energy and charm.
 
Early morning or late afternoon visits are best to avoid crowds and experience the Old Town's beauty in the best light. Remember, the city walls have an entrance fee, but the panoramic views and historical insights are well worth it.

Old Town Dubrovnik

Essaouira, Morocco, is renowned for its argan cooperatives, where visitors can witness the traditional production of argan oil, a practice deeply rooted in Berber culture. Managed primarily by Berber women’s cooperatives, these organizations play a vital role in supporting local communities while preserving centuries-old extraction techniques. From cosmetic oils to culinary delights, argan products are considered Morocco’s "liquid gold" for their health benefits and versatility. Visiting a cooperative offers an authentic glimpse into rural Moroccan life and supports sustainable, fair-trade practices.


1. Watch live demonstrations of traditional argan oil extraction, where women hand-crack nuts using ancient tools and grind them into a rich paste.

2. Learn about the cosmetic and culinary uses of argan oil, including its applications for skincare, hair care, and as a flavorful addition to Moroccan cuisine.

3. Support local women’s cooperatives by purchasing organic, fair-trade products, including oils, soaps, and skincare items, directly from the producers.

4. Enjoy a guided tour that explains the environmental importance of the argan tree, a UNESCO-protected species endemic to southwestern Morocco.

5. Some cooperatives offer tasting sessions of argan culinary products, like amlou—a delicious spread made from argan oil, almonds, and honey.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the morning when the cooperatives are less crowded, and don’t hesitate to ask questions—the women are often eager to share their knowledge about this ancient craft. Combine your visit with a scenic drive through the argan tree forests, where you might spot goats climbing trees in search of the nuts!

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Guatemala

Smoke spewing volcano 🌋 that one can climb, tree blanketed mountains, pastel buildings, cobbled streets and quintessential garden courtyards with fountains give picture postcard views on every corner we turn.

The town Is made for walking with stone arches In bold colors, baroque architecture, churches from Spain and vibrant markets bursting with colorful woven garments like ponchos, hats & table cloth and handicrafts.

It’s the birthplace of chocolate 🍫 and there are several museums that teach how the Mayans made ‘the food of the gods’. Adjoining chocolate cafes serve decadent treats and chocolate liqueur.

The coffee ☕️ is divine too and apart from sampling the local shops, we visited a local plantation to learn about coffee making.

Antigua is one of our favorite Central American cities.

Colorful Markets

Granada's Jewish and Gypsy neighborhoods, the Realejo and Sacromonte districts, are two of the most culturally significant and historically rich areas of the city. Both neighborhoods offer a unique look into the diverse heritage that shaped Granada, with the Realejo reflecting the city’s Sephardic Jewish history, and Sacromonte being the heart of Granada’s Gypsy (Roma) culture and the birthplace of the passionate Zambra flamenco style.

Highlights of Realejo (Jewish Quarter):

1. Historical Streets: The Realejo neighborhood, once known as Garnata al-Yahud, was the vibrant Jewish quarter of Granada before the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain. Its narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses retain much of their medieval charm, making it a fascinating area to explore.

2. Carmen de los Mártires: One of the most beautiful Carmen-style gardens in Granada, offering peaceful surroundings and stunning views of the Alhambra and the city. 

3. Campo del Príncipe: This central square is the neighborhood’s heart, surrounded by traditional taverns where locals gather. It’s an excellent place to enjoy tapas.

Highlights of Sacromonte (Gypsy Quarter):

1. Cuevas (Caves) of Sacromonte: The cave houses of Sacromonte, dug into the hillside, are the hallmark of this Gypsy neighborhood. Many of these caves are still inhabited and have been converted into flamenco tablaos, where visitors can experience the raw passion of Zambra.

2. Sacromonte Abbey: Perched on the hillside, this abbey offers a glimpse into both religious and cultural history. The abbey complex includes underground caves where early Christians were said to have worshipped, as well as breathtaking views over Granada and the Alhambra.

3. Flamenco Shows: Sacromonte is famous for its live flamenco performances. Visit one of the traditional tablaos, such as Cueva de la Rocío or Zambra María la Canastera, to experience this deeply emotional art form in its most authentic setting.

Jewish & Gypsy neighborhoods

Naples, Italy, is home to the magnificent Certosa di San Martino, a former monastery that stands atop Vomero Hill, offering breathtaking views of the city and the Bay of Naples. Originally built in the 14th century and later transformed with Baroque grandeur, this historic site now serves as a museum, showcasing Naples' rich artistic and cultural heritage. With its opulent interiors, serene cloisters, and fascinating collections, Certosa di San Martino is a must-visit destination for history and art enthusiasts.

1. At the monastery’s terraces, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Naples, stretching from Mount Vesuvius to the sparkling waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's one of the best spots in the city for photography.

2. Inside the church, intricate marble inlays, gilded stuccoes, and breathtaking frescoes by artists like Luca Giordano create a stunning display of Baroque artistry. Every corner is a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

3. The Great Cloister, surrounded by elegant marble columns and peaceful gardens, offers a tranquil retreat, while the Small Cloister features ancient tombs and sculptures that add a touch of mystery to the site.

4. The museum inside the monastery houses an impressive collection of historical artifacts, including royal carriages and an extraordinary display of nativity scenes (Presepi), a beloved Neapolitan tradition.

5. Beneath the monastery, an underground network of cisterns and crypts adds an eerie yet fascinating glimpse into the site's past. These hidden spaces make for an intriguing visit.

In the woven streets of Cádiz’s Old Town, which is known for its watchtowers, Torre Tavira is the tallest watchtower, and it has a camera obscura. This, combined with the tower's terrace, allows you to observe live, sweeping views of Cádiz in a way that's both intimate and expansive. Here's what you need to know for a visit that elevates both your perspective and appreciation of Cádiz’s coastal allure.
1: Nestled between the cathedral and Genoves Park, Torre Tavira invites you to climb up this 18th-century marvel, and reach the highest vantage point in the city at 45 meters above sea level, where maritime watchers once signaled ship movements​.

In a darkened room, you'll witness a fascinating, real-time panorama of Cádiz projected onto a concave screen, offering a bird's-eye view of the city's daily life and architectural wonders. Chile’s Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile, stretching over 3,000 square kilometers (1,160 square miles) in the heart of the Atacama Desert. Framed by the Andes Mountains and home to spectacular salt-crusted landscapes and vibrant flamingo-filled lagoons, this surreal environment offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and photographers alike. The salt flat’s cracked surface, mineral-rich pools, and reflections of distant volcanoes create a breathtaking scene, especially at sunrise or sunset.


1. Laguna Chaxa, part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, is one of the best places to spot Andean, Chilean, and James’s flamingos, which feed in the shallow waters.

2. Endless salt formations, resembling a lunar landscape, stretch as far as the eye can see, providing a truly surreal experience.
