Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

Chile

This sunset and stargazing experience takes place under some of the clearest night skies on Earth. After picking you up from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama, Vicente drives you to a secluded spot in the Salt Mountains, where you watch the sunset over a warming mug of vino navegado (a traditional beverage of hot Chilean red wine with orange, cinnamon, and cloves). Here, you observe how the sky changes during twilight, learn about the different stages of visibility, and understand what to expect once you reach the stargazing location.

Once at the camp, you settle into reclining chairs and are offered an assortment of local wines, cheeses, and fruits as the sky ignites above. Vicente invites you to observe nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters using his state-of-the-art smart telescope, capturing images of the night sky that will be shared with you the following day. He also takes portraits of you beneath the glowing skies before returning you to your hotel.

Did you know that we humans are essentially stardust? That’s how Vicente opens his astronomy experience, placing human life into context with our surroundings — including those you cannot see with the naked eye. Japan

The breathtaking beauty of a woman in a kimono is a memory many carry home from Japan. Yet the kimono cannot be worn without its elegant counterpart, the obi — a belt-like accessory whose colors and patterns enhance the garment. In this hands-on workshop, French fashion designer Clémentine opens up her world, sharing her knowledge of kimono and obi through a relaxed creative experience that ends with the making of a modern pouch from a vintage obi.

She takes you on a journey through time, explaining the evolution of these garments and how advances in textile manufacturing shaped their design. You explore different types of kimono, learn about their occasions and etiquette and see up close the textiles — brocade, silk, hand-dyed patterns — that make each piece distinct.

Then comes the transformation: choosing from Clémentine’s collection of vintage obi, you design your own accessory — a pouch that breathes new life into traditional textile, letting you carry a piece of Japan with you.

While kimono remain an important part of Japanese tradition, many are worn only once — at weddings or formal events — then stored away and forgotten. Clémentine’s workshop - inside a traditional Japanese house - honors these garments and the artisans behind them by giving the fabric new purpose.

Her practice is rooted in upcycling, but it’s more than sustainability: it’s about artful transformation. She selects obi with patterns too bold or ornate for modern daily wear, and turns them into striking, functional accessories. In doing so, she reconnects this heritage craft with everyday life.

A trained designer with a deep reverence for Japanese textiles, Clémentine approaches each piece with care. She believes this process honors the artisans who created the textiles, allowing their art to be seen, admired and used once again. By guiding you to create something beautiful and personal, she invites you to participate in a living tradition — one shaped by both preservation and creativity.

Clementine has a background in fashion design and has become an expert in Japanese traditional textiles while living in Japan for over a decade. She will welcome you into her lovely studio located in a quiet Kyoto neighborhood, where you can enjoy learning, making, conversing, and discovering at your own pace.

Italy

In the heart of Mamoiada, behind a solid façade from the late 1800s, an ancestral granite cellar opens its doors for rare, intimate wine experiences. Once the home of Luca’s maternal grandparents, the house was carefully restored in the early 2000s, preserving its original Sardinian architecture.

Inside, thick stone walls embrace rooms filled with solid wood furniture, faded family portraits, and the scent of time. A small display of traditional winemaking tools tells another story—the press, the granite grinder, the wooden vat.

Here, you’ll taste two of Luca’s wines made from Cannonau and Granatza grapes, paired with local cheese and cured meats. As you sip, he shares family memories and village tales, tracing the bond between his roots and this land.

This is much more than a tasting—it’s a quiet conversation inside Mamoiada’s soul, where wine carries the weight of time and stories linger in every corner.

Stepping inside Luca's old family home—now, cellar—is a privilege. In a village known for both its wines and the longevity of its people, this feels like part of its rhythm—rooted, enduring, alive.

“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”

This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Peloponnese, Greece, is home to the legendary Mycenae Archaeological Site, one of the most important ancient sites in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the heart of the powerful Mycenaean civilization (1600–1100 BCE), this ancient citadel was famously linked to King Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks in Homer’s Iliad. Today, visitors can walk through the remnants of this Bronze Age city, exploring its massive stone walls, royal tombs, and iconic Lion Gate, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding Argolid countryside.

1. The Lion Gate, adorned with a pair of stone lions, serves as the monumental entrance to the citadel and is one of the most iconic symbols of ancient Greek architecture.

2. The Treasury of Atreus (or Tomb of Agamemnon), a massive beehive-shaped tomb, impresses visitors with its monumental scale and perfectly preserved corbelled dome.

2. Head northwest toward Praia do Amado, one of the Algarve’s best beaches for surfing. Known for its rolling waves and unspoiled shores, Amado attracts surfers and sunbathers from around the world. 

3. Continue into this expansive nature park, which stretches from the Algarve to the Alentejo region. This protected area is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare coastal plants and nesting seabirds. Drive along the coastal roads, stopping at viewpoints to soak in views.

Lagos West Coast Self-drive

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night. 

Gigantes Islands

Istria, Croatia, is home to the enchanting Grožnjan Artists’ Village, a medieval hilltop town transformed into a vibrant hub for painters, sculptors, and musicians. Known as the “Town of Artists,” Grožnjan is filled with cobbled streets, stone houses, and breathtaking views of the Mirna River Valley, making it one of the most picturesque spots in Istria. With its numerous art galleries, charming cafés, and lively summer music festivals, this hidden gem offers a magical blend of history, creativity, and inspiration.

1. Wandering through the village, dozens of art studios and galleries showcase local and international artists, featuring everything from paintings and ceramics to handmade jewelry and sculptures.

2. The medieval stone-paved streets, ivy-covered houses, and hidden courtyards create a fairy-tale atmosphere, making Grožnjan a dream destination for photography lovers.

Zelve Open-Air Museum

Trieste, Italy, is home to the Risiera di San Sabba, a former rice mill turned Nazi concentration camp during World War II.
