This private ceramics experience invites you to create a mate drinking gourd from scratch. Over the course of 3.5 hours, you will learn about the entire process of modeling and decorating ceramics, culminating in a one-of-a-kind keepsake to take home and relive your time in Mendoza with every sip. While you shape and create your personalized gourd, you will sip on mate chosen by Lucila. Sharing mate (a caffeinated herbal beverage) is an integral component of Argentine culture and you'll come to understand why. The experience is further complemented by a spread of facturas and chipá (local pastries). 

No previous pottery experience is needed—all you need is a desire to enjoy, learn, and share. As the finished ceramic gourd must be fired after the workshop, you will need to collect it one week later or arrange to have it shipped. This cost is not included in the price of the experience. 

Engaging with such as artisanal process as ceramics provides a rare opportunity to connect with an ancient tradition. You may also be surprised by the feeling of wellness the experience creates—Lucila's goal is to inspire a sense of serenity. 

Designed by a local artisan in Mendoza, this craft experience focuses on the culture of mate as much as the pottery aspect; you'll make a mate gourd of your own while sipping the drink cherished by Argentinians from all corners of the country and all walks of life. As you taste mate, hear its significance, and sculpt your own little gourd, you'll graze on facturas Mendocinas and come to recognize how these pastries differ from region to region. Lucila Quevedo is a ceramic artist from Mendoza who has been teaching classes in her workshop for 7 years. She is passionate about the craft of ceramics and focuses on artisanal techniques. Through her work and teachings, she seeks to transmit the essence of this art form and inspire others to explore their creative side. 

Please bear in mind that the workshop is hosted in Spanish. Travelers can take this as an opportunity to practice their Spanish in a warm, creative environment. Non-Spanish speakers are invited to use Google Translate or DeepL as a means of supporting communication with Lucila.

Medellín Market is one of Mexico City’s most culturally layered food hubs. Bosa’s Easter celebration reaches its emotional peak with S’Incontru (The Encounter), a procession that takes place at dawn on Easter Sunday. In this experience, you’ll discover that ham carving isn’t just a technique — it’s an art form, practiced with care and reverence. At a family-run business, master carvers will demonstrate how each cut affects the flavor, texture, and aroma. As they work with precision and passion, they’ll explain the different parts of the ham and the history and tradition behind it.

Your expert host will explain why true Iberian ham can only be produced in Spain, highlight its distinctive characteristics, and explore the different quality levels, from natural grain-fed ham to the prized 100% Iberian acorn-fed ham — and why each deserves its place on the plate.

This experience takes place in a family business in Madrid’s historic Austrias neighborhood. It’s run by the third generation of the Arroyo family, whose grandfather founded the business 65 years ago. They still source their jamón ibérico from the same farms — small producers who raise black Iberian pigs on oak-covered dehesa. The slow, natural process gives the ham its marbled texture and depth of flavor. 

Iberian ham has been part of Spanish culinary tradition for over 2,000 years. In this experience, you’ll learn how the carving itself becomes a craft — it takes years to learn how to follow the grain, anticipate the cut, and honor every part of the ham.

Varvakios Central Market

I am completely fascinated by Buddhist prayer wheels. Our guide tells us that we should walk clockwise, turning the wheel and chanting, “Om Mani Padme Hum”. “Will that give me extra strength to climb up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery tomorrow?”, I ask him. “Absolutely”, he says earnestly. Well, at least one of us has faith, I think to myself.

Paro Taktsang - or Tiger’s Nest monastery - hangs off a cliff at a dizzying 10,240 feet over the Paro Valley. It’s a 5 hour climb, punctuated with lunch. Not too tough, as it turns out. I must be fitter than I think. But the guide reminds me - “See, I told you so”. 

The hike (including getting to the trailhead) takes about 6-7 hours, depending on how much time you spend at the monastery. 4 miles round trip on a wide dirt trail. At the halfway point is a cafeteria - and for most people, getting to this point is the toughest part of the hike. Beyond this, both the scenery and the difficulty of the climb are in your favor.
