This private workshop offers hands-on access to one of Spain’s oldest and most iconic ceramic workshops: the Fajalauza factory. Founded in 1517 and still operated by the Morales family, Fajalauza has been shaping the visual identity of Granada for over 500 years.

You’ll begin with a private tour through its original production site and museum—home to ancient kilns, hand-thrown molds, and decorative pieces that reflect the fusion of Islamic and European styles. As you explore, you’ll learn how Granada’s ceramic language evolved across centuries, adapting to dynasties and shifting cultural forces while staying rooted in the local soil.

Then comes your own initiation into the craft. Guided by master artisans, you’ll sit at the potter’s wheel for a “baptism of clay,” shaping a vessel from scratch. The session includes Andalusian tapas and a drink, served on-site. Your finished piece will be fired and available for pickup in a week, or can be shipped to you for a supplementary fee.

This private, rare-access workshop lets you go behind the scenes of Fajalauza—Granada’s most iconic ceramic tradition, practiced since 1517. Run by the Morales family for generations, this factory is the last of its kind still producing glazed and hand-painted pottery using methods rooted in Islamic and Mozarab craftsmanship.

At the Fundacion Fajalauza factory in Granada, carretera Murcia 166. RED gate. There is a private parking space if you are driving. The factory is a 9 minute drive from the city center or a 25 minute walk. 

You’ll be welcomed by Chemi Márquez Morales or one of his talented colleagues from Fundación Fajalauza. The Morales family has led Fajalauza since its founding in 1517, shaping Granada’s ceramic identity for over five centuries. Chemi, a direct descendant, now guides its creative and cultural direction—working to preserve its legacy at a critical turning point in its history.

Fajalauza is a national institution. Its works have appeared in international exhibitions, design circles, and documentaries, recognized as the soul of Granada’s ceramics tradition. The Fundación Fajalauza now works to safeguard the historic site, protect traditional methods, and share the knowledge held by the last generation of master artisans.

This full-day tour begins in Bilbao and takes you by private car through the landscapes, towns and cultural memory of Basque Country — from industrial past to prehistoric art, from coastline to forest.

You start at the Bizkaia Bridge in Getxo, a UNESCO World Heritage site and symbol of the region’s industrial legacy. From there, continue inland to Guernica, the town made famous by Picasso's legendary anti-war painting - find out how the area was impacted by the Civil War.

Your first stop will be to the Puente Bizkaia, one of the area's most iconic industrial monuments. This is a great starting point for understanding the Basuqe Country's industrial history and character. From the top, you'll also get stunning views of the river and surrounding valley. In the town of Getxo (which the bridge takes you to) you will see examples of 19th mansions, built by the wealth accumulated by the area's industrial magnates.

Next, you'll be driven to Guernica, the subject of Picasso's anti-war and anti-fascist painting which hangs in Madrid's Reina Sofia. Here, you'll be taken on a walking tour through the town and into the assembly house. This provides the perfect excuse to find out more about Basque culture, history, and language. 

This experience brings together the two forces that have most shaped the Basque Country: industry and politics. Bilbao History 101

The Bay of Biscay is famous for its beautiful coastline, beaches, and food. At Mundaka you'll stop off for a panaromic view, which changes dramatically between low tide and high tide. You'll then be taken to the historic town of Bermeo for a walking tour.

Heading inland you'll find two examples of Basque artistry. Santimamiñe is a cave that contains Paleolithic paintings and engravings dating back 14,000. These depictions of bison, horses, and deer give us a glimpse into a prehistoric world. This cave is only accessible April-October. Meanwhile, nearby, in the Bosque de Oma you'll find pine tress painted by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola in the 1980s.  The geometric shapes, eyes, animals, and colorful forms you'll find here change depending on where you're standing, playing with your perspective in the forest.

This journey captures the essence of the Basque Coast in a way that blends scenery, culture, and cuisine. Mundaka is legendary for being home to one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world, making it a pilgrimage site for wave-riders. Yet the experience doesn’t stop at natural beauty—the town of Bermeo adds a vibrant cultural layer.

The cave and forest add another dimension completely. Here, you'll see art 14,000 years old, as well as paintings on living tress. Maritime and Inland Cultures

Before being taken back to Bilbao, you'll go to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge, home to a 10th century hermitage. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe was made famous thanks to its use as a location for the Season 8 of Games of Thrones.

This region is legendary for its cuisine. M'Angel will take you to a hand-picked spot, either inland or by the coast, depending on the season, where you'll enjoy beautiful wines and regions dishes of the highest quality. 

You'll get to enjoy some choice regional wines and pintxos at a txakoli winery. Txakoli wine tends to be white and is known for its citrusy and herby palate.

This experience blends cinematic landscapes with the region’s distinctive wine culture. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the most breathtaking sights in northern Spain—a craggy island crowned with a hermitage that has stood for over a thousand years. Your day begins in Vila Real with a visit to Mateus Palace, an 18th-century Baroque estate known for its grand architecture, reflective pools, and manicured gardens. From there, you’ll head to the Sabrosa area for a tasting with a local beekeeper, sampling honeys shaped by the native flora of the region—acacia, chestnut, rosemary, and heather among them. Lunch follows at a vineyard estate, where traditional Douro dishes are paired with local wines in a quiet setting surrounded by vines. Your journey continues at Casa de Mateus, the Baroque manor just outside Vila Real, completed in the 1740s by architect Nicolau Nasoni. This National Monument estate includes the main house with ornate interiors. Outside, the formal gardens — planted in the 1700s and later refined — are centered around a reflecting pond and a statue by João Cutileiro.

Starting with a sensory journey through the La Vega and Mercado Central food markets, you will procure the freshest ingredients for the grand finale. But before then—a rendezvous at the former address of Chile's most famous denizen of the past. Now a museum, La Chascona was where Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda worked magic both as a writer and gourmand.

The main course of the experience is served at the home of your host in Barrio Bellavista, where the morning's haul is transformed into Caldillo de Congrio (conger chowder), accompanied by premium Chilean wines. This aromatic fish soup was the dish Neruda prepared to welcome guests at his private residences in Santiago, Valparaíso, and Isla Negra. In fact, you'll be conjuring Caldillo de Congrio Nerudiano, true to the poet’s take on this time-honored recipe.

Much like Neruda, Julio is a gourmand who delights in feeding family and friends. His experience is curated to take you through every stage of the process—from chatting with a fishmonger who has run her stall for 50 years in Santiago’s oldest fish market to sautéing the oil and layering flavor into the chowder. During the cooking process, Julio will recite Neruda’s Ode to Conger Chowder—a lyrical poem rich in rhythm and emotion that also doubles as a step-by-step guide to preparing the poet’s signature dish.

Beyond the authenticity of speaking with longtime vendors, touring La Chascona with a Neruda expert, and preparing a meal infused with verse, this experience is marked by warmth. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Ecuador

Visiting Quito, a detour should be made to the “ACTUAL Equator” museum. Only a 50 meters from where it was thought the equator passed, this used science to actually find the equator. The tour guide explains a bit about Ecuador and then shows why this is the center of the earth, with a few fun examples. The water really does flush in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere and apparently this is due to the Earth’s centripetal force.

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

Today, the walk is a favorite for both locals and tourists looking for relaxation and a touch of Seville’s past.

1. Torre del Oro: Begin your walk near this iconic 13th-century tower. Its golden glow and rich history make it a perfect starting point. From here, enjoy views of the river and the surrounding monuments.
