At the edge of Granada’s Albaicín neighborhood stands a factory where Fajalauza has been making pottery the same way for over 500 years. Fajalauza is a living record of Granada’s artistic identity, tracing its techniques to the Al-Andalus period and the workshops once clustered near Puerta de Fajalauza. This ceramic tradition blends Islamic, Iberian, Andalusian influences into a style known across Spain: white enamel, cobalt blue and green glazes, and patterns that echo the Alhambra.

This tour, led by a member of the Fajalauza Foundation, opens parts of the site normally closed to the public: kiln rooms, workshop floors, the small museum where archive pieces sit beside recent works. The glazes echo those used for centuries, often inspired by the Alhambra.

Ceramics here were created for daily use: vessels to carry water, preserve food, identify homes, mark graves. Even now, their forms remain largely unchanged. Few places in Spain hold time, rhythm, and tradition in such balance.

Fajalauza is one of few surviving craft lineages in Spain with unbroken continuity from Post-Reconquista era to the present. Fajalauza tiles replaced originals in Patio de los Arrayanes. Still run by the Morales family since the 19th century, its techniques and motifs—heraldic eagles, grenadine sprigs, blue-green latticework—have remained largely unchanged. The factory’s location, firing techniques, and visual language have endured war, exile and mass production. It is here, in the factory, where each piece begins—still shaped by wheel, hand, story.

The Morales family now runs the Fajalauza Foundation which preserves its legacy. This experience offers access not only to the factory but to the people preserving it. The Foundation’s members guide you through kilns, archives, workshops, sharing their stories. The tour is about heritage—but also part of a larger effort to preserve and convert it into a cultural center and school. You become part of that.

Japan

On this fascinating photowalk of a lesser-known Tokyo neighborhood, photographer Lee Chapman guides you through the changing streets he has been documenting through his photographs for over a decade. Far from the steel and glass monuments of Shinjuku and Shibuya, this low-lying neighborhood in the shadow of Tokyo Skytree has been slowly evolving away from its working-class identity.

Lee introduces you to the main characters of his story, buildings and businesses that have survived decades in this neighborhood. Others survive only in memory, memorialized by Lee's beautiful images that he shows you as you walk, sometimes standing in front of the place that no longer exists.

Take a short break in a tiny local restaurant or coffee shop where Lee knows the owners by name to enjoy a refreshing drink or an inexpensive meal as Lee shares his memories and thoughts about the changing neighborhood.

If time allows, finish the tour at a location made famous in Wem Wenders's film, "Perfect Days."

Lee is well-known in the neighborhood from his consistent presence over the years, so you'll be greeted by friendly locals who know Lee and have likely been photographed by him. Every interaction is wonderful and unrehearsed, a tribute to the people of this incredible "disappearing" city.

Lee tells a story of both sadness and hope. Although much of Tokyo's past will disappear and never return, there is a growing movement among young entrepreneurs to bring life back to this neighborhood and save important places from destruction. Over 20 years ago, Maestro José lost his sight to glaucoma. What could have been an end became a beginning. Relying on touch, intuition and memory, he continued sculpting—his hands guided by a sense of form that doesn’t require vision. Today, he’s internationally recognized not only for his work, but for the spirit behind it. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

Jamaica

The Man Who Built the Coolest Bar in the World. That would be a Jamaican fisherman from Saint Elizabeth called Floyd who thought it would be nice to have a place where he and his buddies could hang out to and from their fishing ventures. He built the bar on a sandbar a mile off the coast in Parottee Bay out of driftwood (the wood was restored after Hurricane Ivan in 2004). In between dips in the turquoise water, you can sip a Red Stripe, eat freshly grilled snapper and play dominoes. Or catch up with Floyd at the bar. Someday, I’d like to watch the sunset from there.

Phaistos Palace

My sister and I flew into Las Vegas to then see the Grand Canyon. We woke early to get picked up at our hotel and the tour took us to the Hoover Dam, a stop on Route 66 (where the Cars movie took place), and finally the Grand Canyon. We did an easy hike but it took about 4 hours. We stopped multiple times for pictures. It was amazing. The pictures don’t do it justice. 

My sister and I wish we had spent more time there and maybe hiking a different trail.
