Mexico

This hands-on experience invites you to learn the art of traditional basket weaving from a fifth-generation artisan in his home workshop. You'll learn about the origins of his creative practice and make your own piece to take home, with his expert guidance throughout the process.

Basketry was one of the earliest crafts in Mesoamerica, predating the domestication of crops and handmade ceramics. Because this practice uses biodegradable materials, few historical remnants remain—so its history lives on through family traditions and storytelling. By learning about the skill, time, and dedication involved in creating these baskets, you'll help support local artisans through both financial investment and cultural preservation.

Your basket-making workshop will last roughly two hours. Afterward, you’ll continue the carrizo theme with a meal at a restaurant that serves Oaxacan tlayudas on handwoven carrizo plates.

These artisans are living examples of the role storytelling plays in preserving ancestral artistry. While basketry declined with the introduction of plastic, it still holds an essential place in the rural economy. Through intimate conversations with these makers, you'll gain insight into the cultural importance of carrizo baskets and what they mean to their young family.

These pieces are crafted from an invasive river reed that was once plentiful and easy to access. But with climate change extending the dry months, access is now limited during certain times of the year. You'll learn how this shift directly impacts both the basketry and the livelihoods of those who, like generations before them, depend on this tradition.

You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the patience and skill this craft requires. A carrizo basket will no longer be just an object—it will represent family connection, resilience, and ongoing adaptation in changing times.

The Story In Every Basket

This experience accommodates a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 people. What’s Included: A guided visit to the workshop of this talented family, a short basket weaving course with expert instruction from the makers, and your finished piece to take home as a keepsake and reference. Full translation is provided when needed. Also included are a set meal and one non-alcoholic drink per person, and round-trip transport from the listed meeting point in Oaxaca.

We recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, water, and your camera or phone if you'd like to take photos. If you would like to purchase any art/craft pieces from the makers, it's always a good idea to bring some Mexican pesos, as cash is often preferred. That said, there's no pressure to buy anything during this visit.

Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

A unique culinary experience that combines a visit to the historic Santa Caterina Market with a hands-on tapas workshop. The adventure begins with a guided tour of the market, Barcelona's first covered market and a rich symbol of the city's heritage. Inaugurated in 1848, the market stands on land that was once home to the Convent of Santa Caterina. Its vibrant, modern appearance, characterized by a colorful, Gaudí-inspired roof, encases a bustling hub of fresh, regional produce. Here, you'll engage with local vendors, gain insights into the Mediterranean diet, sample local delicacies, and understand the importance of fresh, regional produce for your tapas. Following the market visit, you will walk to Canela Fina, where you will be greeted with a welcome drink and a brief explanation of the venue's history, strongly linked to Catalonia and its culture. This workshop offers a first-hand experience of all the steps involved in the creation of the emblematic tapas of Spain. You’ll see the journey of creating a selection of tapas from market to the table. You will prepare the tapas under the guidance of the chef, who will explain the geographical origin of each dish, and share interesting facts and creative possibilities for their preparation. The hands-on experience is a crucial element. Following the preparation, there's the joy of tasting the creations, paired with traditional Spanish wines. Coyoacán means “place of coyotes” in Nahuatl, and it’s long been one of Mexico City’s most distinct districts—first as an Aztec outpost, then a colonial center, and later the home of artists and writers like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Octavio Paz. Today, it’s a neighborhood where color, flavor, and history live side by side.

Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of the Women Photographers History collective.

Manuel is also a Mexican photographer from the city. He has worked with international media such as The New York Times and is currently contributing to The New Yorker. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, hosted by the U.S. Congress at the Capitol Building and funded by Amnesty International and the Open Society Foundations.

In this experience, they combine their photography skills with their passion for welcoming people to their home city and helping visitors experience the best it has to offer. With Marie and Manuel, you won’t just receive a collection of beautiful portraits from your time in Mexico City—you’ll also get to know the city more intimately and feel at home.

After a picnic lunch in a park near the mosaics of Puente Alto, you will travel to the Universidad de Chile metro station which houses the mosaic, "Alas de Amistad". 

Inaugurated in 2024, this mural celebrates the bicentennial of friendship between the United States and Chile. It was a collaboration with the United States Embassy in Chile. As one of the co-artistic directors, Shannon will reveal how it came to be and talk you through the symbolism.

We will stop and admire the mosaic on the front of the Municipality Building of Puente Alto. This is where Shannon participated in an international mosaic event in 2014. This was organized by the artist Isidora Paz Lopez – the same artist who organized the rest of the project we have viewed. Nearby, we also have the opportunity to view the spectacular mosaics at the end of Puente Alto’s monumental metro project.

Shannon McEvoy participated in the mosaic installations on the Municipality Building in Puente Alto in a two-week international invitational event in 2014. Due to Shannon’s first-hand experience, this part of the tour is where you will hear some of the most in-depth stories behind the mural process.

We conclude our artist-guided viewing of the stunning mosaics in Puente Alto.

Municipality of Puente Alto 

Our first stop is near the first metro station in Puente Alto. From here, we will follow the route of the metro line from the outside. Along the way, we will admire a total of 4 metro stations and 84 monumental pillars adorned with the beautiful mosaics of Isidora Paz Lopez and her team from the 2014 intervention. 

Covering over 4,000 square meters, this project is considered the largest mosaic intervention in Latin America and the third largest in the world. We will walk at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to take photos. Water, electrolytes, and snacks will be provided for the walk.  

Our mosaic trek concludes at the Municipality Building of Puente Alto.  

Shannon McEvoy participated in some of the mosaic installations in Puente Alto and is knowledgeable about the others. Her walking tour focuses on the stories behind the murals: how artists collaborate and what public art represents to a local community and the overall identity of a city.

Originally from Minnesota, multimedia artist Shannon McEvoy studied in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. Inspired by the street art of Valparaíso, she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and later became a muralist herself.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—though her talents extend far beyond. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography. As an artistic director, she has overseen several monumental public art installations in Santiago and beyond.

Florencia Campos Correa, or Flor, is a Chilean-Spanish textile designer and author based in Santiago. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Flor has authored several books packed with vibrant pattern inspiration and projects. Her nature motifs are translated into floral crochet designs published in a British magazine and she has penned a children's story which inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in the youngest of budding designers. 

Argentina

This thoughtfully curated walking tour explores Buenos Aires through the lens of its Belle Époque architecture. Between 1880 and 1930, the city experienced a wave of economic prosperity and elite cosmopolitanism, giving rise to grand buildings inspired by the opulence of European capitals. Hosted by Gabriela, a native Porteña with deep roots in the city, you’ll uncover the historical context, stylistic influences, urban legends, and unforgettable stories from this “beautiful era.”

The host, Şeyma Çınar, is a master artist specializing in miniature art, Tezhip (Islamic illumination), and floral designs since 1998. With formal certification from Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, she has dedicated over 25 years to studying and teaching the intricate techniques of Ottoman miniature painting. Having participated in multiple exhibitions and published work on Islamic art, she brings both technical expertise and cultural depth to the workshop, ensuring participants leave with a rich understanding of this ancient craft. She will be accompanied by a translator, allowing everyone to fully engage with her insights and expertise.

This is a guided journey through the streets of Marrakesh, where storytelling and sacred geography meet. You’ll follow the route of the city’s seven revered saints—an ancient pilgrimage known as the Ziara of the Seven Men—accompanied by a professional storyteller who brings each saint’s legacy to life at the very places they are honored.

From hidden shrines to quiet alleys, you’ll uncover layers of history, faith, and folklore that rarely make it into guidebooks. The experience combines live storytelling with a walking tour to the zaouias (shrines), celebrating the seven men who gave the city its nickname: The City of the Seven Saints.

At each site, you’ll pause to see and listen—encountering tales of healers, mystics, scholars, and rebels who shaped the spiritual identity of Marrakesh. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

A short hike gets you to the picturesque pique which is gorgeous. Very pretty and worth seeing if on Maui.
