Originally from Toronto, Canada, Eric has been living in Kyoto for over 22 years. He first came to Kyoto to complete his Master’s degree in Japanese Art History and now works as a teacher and translator. Since 2022, he has been running a monthly pop-up restaurant, serving Cantonese-inspired dishes. Well connected with the art and culinary communities in Kyoto, he is eager to share this wonderful city with visitors. 

Pass through the torii gate into the sacred grounds of a historic Kanazawa shrine for a private 90-minute immersion in Shinto. Guided by Yuki-san, a Shinto priest whose lineage has cared for shrines in Kanazawa for over a thousand years, you experience the shrine during the stillness of the early morning or the soft glow of the late afternoon, outside regular visiting hours.

In addition to a brief grounding in core Shinto beliefs, you walk the grounds, among the branch shrines and ancient architecture, hearing the stories connected to them. In the main building, you learn the symbolic significance of priest and miko attire, as well as ritual instruments used in ceremonies and festivals. You take part in a short purification and blessing ceremony in the worship hall. Meet Yuki-san at the entrance of the shrine or at the shrine office of Yasue Hachimangu Shrine. 

Yukimasa Atsumi is a 26th-generation Shinto priest at Yasue Hachimangu Shrine in Kanazawa where his family lineage has cared for shrines in the city for over a thousand years. Through dialogue, ritual and storytelling, he helps people encounter the spiritual, cultural and human dimensions of Shinto in a way that feels personal, thoughtful and grounded.

A former schoolteacher who has also lived in Australia and Sweden, Yuki-san speaks excellent English. Through the International Administration of Jinja Honcho (Association of Shinto Shrines), he has guided foreign diplomats and ambassadors to Ise Grand Shrine and shrines across Japan and has participated in international religious conferences.

With deep roots in shrine life and an international perspective, he shares Shinto not as an abstract subject, but as a living part of Japanese daily life. Through his work, he takes part in important moments in people’s lives, from prayers for safe childbirth to weddings and seasonal festivals.

The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established restaurant with a vast doll collection heading to a master’s workshop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher is a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

The experience starts in Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage city shaped by more than two millennia of history. Founded as a Roman colony in 46 BC and developed under Augustus, it preserves remarkable Roman monuments such as the Amphitheatre and the Théâtre Antique. After lunch in Arles, you continue south into the Camargue, following the Rhône toward the Mediterranean. Lagos West Coast Self-drive

Portugal’s Marvão Castle, perched atop the Serra de São Mamede at 860 meters (2,821 feet) above sea level, offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Portugal. Located near the Spanish border in the Alentejo region, this medieval fortress was a key defensive stronghold, guarding the frontier for centuries. With its well-preserved walls, cobbled streets, and sweeping vistas, Marvão is a must-visit for history lovers and photographers seeking a true hidden gem.

Marvão Castle

Shibuya Crossing, or Shibuya Scramble Crossing, is a popular scramble crossing in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.[1] It is located in front of the Shibuya Station Hachikō exit and stops vehicles in all directions to allow pedestrians to inundate the entire intersection. The statue of Hachikō, between the station and the intersection, is a common meeting place and almost always crowded.

Three large TV screens mounted on nearby buildings overlook the crossing, as well as many advertising signs. The Starbucks store overlooking the crossing is also one of the busiest in the world. Its heavy traffic and inundation of advertising have led to it being compared to the Times Square intersection in New York City and Piccadilly Circus intersection in London.

The Twelve Apostles is located on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. It’s a stunning coastal drive that is accessible with any type of vehicle. 

The Great Ocean Road stretches over 250km and there are many beautiful stops along the way.

Greece

Timeless Vista: Aljezur Castle

Pinacoteca di Brera is one of Milan's most prestigious art galleries, housing a significant collection of Italian and foreign art from the 13th to the 20th century. Located in the Palazzo di Brera, which dates back to the late Baroque period and was built on the remains of a 14th-century monastery, the Pinacoteca shares its space with the Academy of Fine Arts. Why is this a cool place to visit?
Historical Significance: The gallery was born out of a political action, distinct from other major Italian museums that originated from private collections of monarchs or noble families. The Brera Gallery was officially established in 1809, although its first collection existed from 1776 alongside the Accademia di Belle Arti, instituted by Maria Theresa of Austria. 

Notable Masterpieces: The Pinacoteca di Brera's collection includes several world-renowned masterpieces.
