This full-day tour begins in Bilbao and takes you by private car through the landscapes, towns and cultural memory of Basque Country — from industrial past to prehistoric art, from coastline to forest.

You start at the Bizkaia Bridge in Getxo, a UNESCO World Heritage site and symbol of the region’s industrial legacy. From there, continue inland to Guernica, the town made famous by Picasso's legendary anti-war painting - find out how the area was impacted by the Civil War.

Next, the road turns coastal. You'll visit fishing villages and dramatic viewpoints along the Bay of Biscay — beaches beloved by surfers and headlands featured in Game of Thrones. A seasonal Basque lunch highlights local flavors.

Later, the magical Bosque de Oma where trees are adorned with paintings, awaits, as do the Santimamiñe caves, home to prehistoric art. End the day with txakoli tasting overlooking vineyards, as your guide helps reflect on how each stop brought you closer to Basque Country's unique spirit.

The Basques are among Europe’s earliest known inhabitants, with evidence suggesting people lived here over 200,000 years ago. This deep history makes the Basque Country unique within Spain and much of Europe. It’s most clearly seen in the Basque language, whose origins remain a mystery even to linguists.

This full-day trip through the Basque countryside and along the Bay of Biscay brings you closer to that long, proud history. Your experience is enriched by a host deeply knowledgeable about the region’s culture, art, and post-industrial evolution.

At each stop, history reveals itself through physical traces — a cave wall, a war-damaged town square, a transporter bridge still in use. You’ll meet local experts — like the guide at the winery — who bring their own perspectives to the story. This is the Basque Country as it’s understood by those who live here and offered to you through their lens.

Your first stop will be to the Puente Bizkaia, one of the area's most iconic industrial monuments. This is a great starting point for understanding the Basuqe Country's industrial history and character. From the top, you'll also get stunning views of the river and surrounding valley. In the town of Getxo (which the bridge takes you to) you will see examples of 19th mansions, built by the wealth accumulated by the area's industrial magnates.

Next, you'll be driven to Guernica, the subject of Picasso's anti-war and anti-fascist painting which hangs in Madrid's Reina Sofia. Here, you'll be taken on a walking tour through the town and into the assembly house. This provides the perfect excuse to find out more about Basque culture, history, and language. 

This experience brings together the two forces that have most shaped the Basque Country: industry and politics. The Puente Bizkaia is not just an engineering marvel, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site that represents the region’s transformation into an industrial powerhouse. Crossing into Getxo reveals another layer—the elegant mansions built from newfound wealth. 

The journey then turns to Guernica, a town synonymous worldwide with resistance, resilience, and Basque identity. Walking through its assembly house, where local governance has been practiced for centuries, connects you to deep-rooted traditions of autonomy and democracy. Few places allow visitors to see both the grandeur of industrial prosperity and the scars of political struggle in one day.

Bilbao History 101

The Bay of Biscay is famous for its beautiful coastline, beaches, and food. At Mundaka you'll stop off for a panaromic view, which changes dramatically between low tide and high tide. You'll then be taken to the historic town of Bermeo for a walking tour.

Heading inland you'll find two examples of Basque artistry. Santimamiñe is a cave that contains Paleolithic paintings and engravings dating back 14,000. These depictions of bison, horses, and deer give us a glimpse into a prehistoric world. This cave is only accessible April-October. Meanwhile, nearby, in the Bosque de Oma you'll find pine tress painted by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola in the 1980s.  The geometric shapes, eyes, animals, and colorful forms you'll find here change depending on where you're standing, playing with your perspective in the forest.

This journey captures the essence of the Basque Coast in a way that blends scenery, culture, and cuisine. Mundaka is legendary for being home to one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world, making it a pilgrimage site for wave-riders. Yet the experience doesn’t stop at natural beauty—the town of Bermeo adds a vibrant cultural layer.

The cave and forest add another dimension completely. Here, you'll see art 14,000 years old, as well as paintings on living tress. These are two dramatically different examples of art and culture interacting with nature, and provide an opportunity to witness the full length and breadth of Basque culture.

Maritime and Inland Cultures

Before being taken back to Bilbao, you'll go to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge, home to a 10th century hermitage. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe was made famous thanks to its use as a location for the Season 8 of Games of Thrones.

This region is legendary for its cuisine. M'Angel will take you to a hand-picked spot, either inland or by the coast, depending on the season, where you'll enjoy beautiful wines and regions dishes of the highest quality. 

You'll get to enjoy some choice regional wines and pintxos at a txakoli winery. Txakoli wine tends to be white and is known for its citrusy and herby palate.

This experience blends cinematic landscapes with the region’s distinctive wine culture. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the most breathtaking sights in northern Spain—a craggy island crowned with a hermitage that has stood for over a thousand years. Walking its stone bridge and climbing the winding steps feels like stepping into legend, an impression magnified by its role as a Game of Thrones filming location. 

From there, the transition to a txakoli winery highlights another Basque treasure. Unlike any other Spanish wine, txakoli is crisp, lightly sparkling, and uniquely tied to the coastal terroir. Enjoying a glass with views of rolling vineyards and the sea beyond offers a perfect, sensory way to end the day.
