Capileira, Village of Charm

Capileira | Spain
About
What is this?
Capileira is a small, picturesque village in La Alpujarra, perched 1,436 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Its narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, wooden balconies, and striking mountain vistas give it an atmosphere that feels both traditional and timeless. Visitors come for its quiet beauty, local craftsmanship, and the chance to wander through a village that still reflects centuries of rural life.
What makes this unique?
Capileira is known for its handmade woven textiles, or jarapas, produced in small family workshops that carry on an old Alpujarran craft tradition. The village and its surroundings are also sources of local cheeses, honey, and cured meats. This area forms part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its blend of cultural heritage and natural landscape. The terraced farming and Moorish irrigation channels (acequias), still in use today, offer a living connection to the region’s history.
