Marcela's home studio overlooks one of Concón's quaint fishing hamlets and sets the scene for an afternoon of creativity and calm.

Before starting, Marcela will share anecdotes relating to Concón and Valparaíso. Under her guidance, you'll try your hand at crafting a monotype print inspired by Chile's landscapes and mythology. Marcela will support you through creating the design and nurturing your natural talent and proving that everyone has an inner artist. By the time the activity is complete, your print will be ready to take away. No prior experience or skills in drawing or printmaking are necessary. To conclude your trip to Concón, Marcela will serve a light "once" of tea and pastries as well as recommending local seafood restaurants in the "Gastronomic Capital of Chile".

The experience provides rare access to the home studio of a professional Chilean artist. Marcela's portfolio spans lithography, painting, and folk art and she will share rich insight into Chile's artisanal legacy and culture while you create—storytelling lies at the heart of this activity. Marcela's studio stands above the Higuerillas fishing hamlet in Concón, a short drive from Viña del Mar or Valparaíso. This quiet area is rarely visited by international tourists which means you'll experience a truly local community. 

In terms of inspiration, you only need glance outside where dunes tumble to meet the waves of the Pacific and seals cling to rocky crags. This residential neighborhood is alive with flora and avifauna while Marcela, well-versed in Chilean mythology, has further visual prompts to kindle your creativity. Refreshments and pastries are provide—if you're lucky, you may get to try "pancito amasado" bread baked by Marcela's father, a retired lighthouse keeper.

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist. Born in 1965, Marcela grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis, USA, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at Casa Plan in Valparaíso.

Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of Hans Lucas, the French international photo agency, as well as the Women Photographers History collective.

In this experience, she combines her photography skills with her passion for welcoming people to her home city and helping visitors discover the best it has to offer. With Marie, you won’t just receive a collection of beautiful portraits from your time in Mexico City—you’ll also get to know the city more deeply and feel at home.

Japan

This rare-access experience is a private photoshoot with a real Maiko — a young woman apprenticing to become a Geisha. Maiko are renowned for their colorful kimono, elaborately styled hair, and refined manners. Most visitors are lucky to catch even a fleeting glimpse of them as they move quickly through Kyoto’s streets between appointments. Recent regulations protect Maiko from unwanted attention from tourists. But in this experience, you’ll have the privilege of spending relaxed, uninterrupted time photographing and engaging with a Maiko.

The photo shoot takes place at Chionsha, a one-of-a-kind heritage house in Kyoto – the perfect, atmospheric backdrop for the session. Under the guidance of a professional expert photographer, you’ll learn how to use both natural and artificial light to create evocative portraits. You'll also practice how to work with a live subject — learning and practicing how to pose and frame your subject to evoke emotion and tell a story through your lens. 

This fully private session offers an extraordinary opportunity to interact with a Maiko while learning professional portraiture techniques. An entire historic house in Kyoto is reserved exclusively for your session — offering creative freedom to explore light, setting and subject. You’ll learn techniques unique to photographing a Maiko, and portraiture skills you can apply to other subjects in the future. This is a guided after-dark walk and drive through Guadalajara’s historic center to see landmarks like the Cathedral, Teatro Degollado, and Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres—all beautifully illuminated. Portugal

This hands-on workshop offers rare access to one of Portugal’s most endangered crafts: Bisalhães black pottery, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In a small mountain village north of Vila Real, just a few remaining artisans keep this tradition alive.

You’ll step into a rustic, working atelier to see how local earth, fire, and ancestral technique come together to form these matte-black pieces. After a live demonstration of traditional hand-molding, you’ll take a seat at the wheel to shape your own, guided step-by-step by the master potter.

If weather allows, you’ll also witness the outdoor firing process—where pine needles and broom branches are used to stoke the open-air kiln. This method turns raw clay into its distinct black finish, a transformation unchanged for generations. Your completed piece is then fired, carefully packaged, and shipped to your home — a tactile memory of Douro, shaped by your own hands.

In Bisalhães, black clay pottery has been shaped by hand for centuries—but today, only a few master potters still practice this endangered art. This experience offers rare, personal access to one of them, in a setting far from the commercial workshops of larger towns.

Inside the workshop, you’ll learn how the clay is prepared, shaped and dried using traditional tools—some passed down through families—and how the outdoor kilns, fueled by pine and broom, are smothered post-fire with moss, earth and sand to lock in the signature matte-black finish. The method is entirely natural: no glaze, no paint, just earth and fire.

Under the artisan’s guidance, you’ll craft a piece using age-old techniques, then watch as it’s hardened by fire into a singular object. First documented in 1709 and inscribed in 2016 on UNESCO’s Urgent Safeguarding List, this practice is at risk—but alive. This photography experience takes place in the small coastal city of Concón, cocooned in the cliffs north of Valparaíso. You will explore three fragile ecosystems: the Concón Wetlands (Humedales de Concón), La Roca Oceánica (Ocean Rock), and the Dunes of Concón (Dunas de Concón). At each, you'll photograph flora and fauna under the mentorship of David, a local creative who grew up amid this windswept beauty spot. 

The experience takes place in the late afternoon and concludes with golden hour and sunset at the Dunes of Concón. Starting at the reed-lined wetlands, you'll encounter such birdlife as pelicans and perritos (white-backed stilts). Afterwards, you'll pause for coffee and empanada at Surf Beach (Playa La Boca). Frequented by local surfers—David included—this is an opportunity to flex your "moving target" skills! A small hike through the surreal dune system brings you to a vantage point from which you can take in panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Viña del Mar.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Iceland

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.
