This experience is centered on the historic workshops that still give life to Testaccio, a district shaped by labor and craftsmanship. At its heart is a rare encounter inside a restoration atelier founded in 1987, where antique dolls are brought to life. Your host Irene will introduce you to her parents Gianni and Eliana - the founders - who share the delicate process of repairing porcelain faces and preserving the memories these objects carry.

The walk continues through the neighborhood and the stories that influenced its identity: the old slaughterhouse complex, the amphora-stacked hill known as Monte dei Cocci, and the covered market that still anchors local life. She was the first in Italy to publish a study on gentrification comparing her own neighborhood, Testaccio, with Astoria in New York. Olivier, whose career once took him around the world in science and business, always kept wine as his constant passion. In 2021 he embraced the dream of becoming a vintner, dedicating himself to reviving the potential of the estate and the historic French grape Côt (Malbec).

Chile

This half-day private mosaic experience takes place in the studio of the bilingual muralist, Shannon McEvoy. Under Shannon's guidance, you will design and fabricate your own mosaic masterpiece to take home as a memento of your time in Chile.  From the Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert, to the colorful hills of Valparaiso, to the Villarrica Volcano in Pucon, to the rock formations of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile is filled with breathtaking landscapes that are gorgeous to mosaic.

Shannon will work with you to help you bring your vision to fruition. After the activity concludes, Shannon will grout your mosaic tile and help you to arrange the pick-up from her studio 48+ hours later. During the workshop, you'll hear of the significance of mosaics in Chile—a country famed for its street art and murals. You'll hear about Shannon's role as a mosaic muralist working in Santiago, Puente Alto (the Mosaic Capital of the Southern Hemisphere), and beyond.

This experience invites you into the intimate studio of an artist in Santiago to create your own Chile-inspired mosaic artwork. This may be of an abstract style or inspired by Chilean landscapes. You may choose to collaborate with your travel partner and create one mosaic to take home, or create individual masterpieces.

Over the course of the workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of mosaic techniques as Shannon helps you assemble your artwork. As an artistic director, Shannon collaborates with Chilean muralists and champions the community aspect of creation—she believes that art is for everyone. During this activity, you'll have the opportunity to quiz Shannon about life as a bilingual expat artist in Chile, her current projects, and how you can bring more creativity into your life. This experience takes place in Shannon's studio in Providencia, Santiago de Chile. The exact address to is provided after booking. If traveling by metro, take Line 1 and alight at either Pedro de Valdivia or Manuel Montt. It's a 15-minute walk to Shannon’s studio from either station. Uber and Cabify rides are widely available in Santiago.

Shannon is a multimedia artist who loves exploring different languages and cultures, meeting new people, and listening to their stories. Originally from Minnesota, she studied abroad in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. The street art of Valparaíso influenced her so profoundly that she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and pursued a career as a muralist.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—but her talents don’t stop there. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography.

Shannon loves sharing her passions for art and language. To her, both are about expressing oneself and building meaningful connections. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she also speaks basic Portuguese.

Sanja Matsuri has roots dating back to the 7th century and is considered one of the largest and wildest festivals in Japan. It’s a rare opportunity to capture locals outside of everyday Japanese life — expressive, celebratory, and fully immersed in tradition.

Held on the third weekend of May every year (May 15-17 in 2026) at Asakusa Shrine, the festival takes over the neighborhood for three full days of parades, music, dancing and ritual. At the center are the mikoshi — portable shrines carried on the shoulders of teams of bearers, who shout and sway as they move through narrow streets.

You’ll be drawn to the raw energy of the crowds, the emotion on the faces of the mikoshi bearers, and the visual richness of the traditional wear — from happi coats to tabi socks. For over 40 years, Francesco has transformed threads of gold and silver into intricate jewelry, working entirely by hand with tools and techniques passed down through generations.

You'll learn how Sardinian filigree is created—from raw materials to the delicate process that gives each piece its unique character. In his studio, Francesco introduces the region’s iconic forms: traditional wedding rings, ornate buttons worn on bridal gowns, and pendants that tell stories of Sardinia’s past. He also shares his family’s history, showing old photographs taken in the same space where his workshop now stands.

You'll hear about the area’s centuries-old link to gold and silver mining and the ancient repoussé and chasing technique that Francesco still practices. While rooted in tradition, he also explores contemporary designs.

Each year, over 2 million wildebeest, zebras and antelope migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of water and fresh grazing . Experiencing this during July-October is an absolute spectacle.

The Mara Triangle is particularly great for watching river crossings in August and September - perilous for the animals as the river is packed with wily Nile crocodiles.

We stay with this herd of zebras for 3 days - waiting for them to decide to cross. It’s a matter of life and death for them - so they are understandably cautious  The zebra get to the banks more than 20 times, giving up at the very last minute, often spooked by a territorial hippo or a sneaky crocodile.

Finally, a brave zebra leaps forward into the water. And a second one follows fast. Suddenly it’s mayhem with hundreds of zebras and wildebeest splashing into the river.

I am completely fascinated by Buddhist prayer wheels. Our guide tells us that we should walk clockwise, turning the wheel and chanting, “Om Mani Padme Hum”. “Will that give me extra strength to climb up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery tomorrow?”, I ask him. “Absolutely”, he says earnestly. Well, at least one of us has faith, I think to myself.

Paro Taktsang - or Tiger’s Nest monastery - hangs off a cliff at a dizzying 10,240 feet over the Paro Valley. It’s a 5 hour climb, punctuated with lunch. Not too tough, as it turns out. I must be fitter than I think. But the guide reminds me - “See, I told you so”. 

The hike (including getting to the trailhead) takes about 6-7 hours, depending on how much time you spend at the monastery. 4 miles round trip on a wide dirt trail. At the halfway point is a cafeteria - and for most people, getting to this point is the toughest part of the hike. Beyond this, both the scenery and the difficulty of the climb are in your favor.

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the most stunning examples of Marinid-era Islamic architecture. Built in the 14th century by Sultan Abu Inan Faris, this madrasa (Islamic school) served as both a center of learning and a place of worship. Established within the walls of the former Merced Calzada Convent from the early 17th century, this museum showcases an unparalleled collection that spans from the Gothic era to the 20th century, with a special focus on the Sevillian school of the 17th century. Its comprehensive collection features masterpieces by artists such as Murillo, Valdés Leal, Zurbarán, and El Greco, alongside works from foreign painters like Jan Brueghel the Elder, Pieter Aertsen, and Cornelis de Vos​​​​​​​​. We cannot recommend it enough - for these reasons:
1. The museum is renowned for its Baroque art, particularly highlighting the Sevillian School's golden age with works by Murillo and his contemporaries. It is a testament to the flourishing of arts in Seville during the Siglo de Oro, Spain's Golden Century​​.
2. Beyond its art, the museum itself, originally a monastery, is a masterpiece of Andalusian Mannerist style. Its structure, centered around three patios and connected by a grand staircase to the church, showcases the architectural legacy of Seville.
3. You can marvel at iconic works such as "The Annunciation" by Alejo Fernández, a seminal piece of the Sevillian Renaissance, and Zurbarán’s "Saint Hugh in the Refectory". The museum's collection spans several rooms, each dedicated to different periods and styles, from medieval jewels to Baroque compositions and Andalusian costumbrism​​​​.
4. The museum serves as a cultural crossroads, where the religious themes of early works give way to the secular, vividly depicting Andalusian life in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with scenes of local customs, bullfighting, and fairs, offering a window into the soul of Andalusia​​.

Catania's fish market, known locally as "A Piscaria," is the heart of the city. It’s loud, it’s surprising, it’s humbling, it’s real. Colours, fragrances, and market place shouting.

A visit to Catania's fish market allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, adding a unique and flavorful element to your Sicily travels.

The fish market comes to life in the early morning, around 5.30 a.m., when the fishmongers arrive. But from around 7.30 a.m., the market offers a more calm environment; it's easier to roam among the booths, and soak up the environment.

Best of Melbourne Tour

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!
