Likely meaning “place of coyotes,” Coyoacán was originally a village founded by the Tepanec people in pre-Columbian times. In 1521, it became the first capital of ‘New Spain’ and remained a settlement distinct from Mexico City until the 1850s. Now located in the south of Mexico City (CDMX), Coyoacán is perhaps best known today for being the home of the Frida Kahlo Museum and the impressive colonial-era architecture.

Chile

This full-day excursion to Laguna del Inca (Lake of the Incas) in the Cordillera de los Andes takes you to a place of mystical beauty, where you'll enjoy a 1.5-hour private boat ride across a lake formed by melting glaciers. The experience is followed by wine tasting and lunch near the lagoon.

Located 2,800 m above sea level, Laguna del Inca is an emblematic point on the Inca Trail, a sacred site dedicated to Pachamama. A part of Portillo Valley, a very scenic mountain resort, its name comes from a local legend involving Inca royalty and a lost love.

Spain

La Madrugá is the most intense night of Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Seville. During the week leading to Easter, the city fills with processions organized by religious brotherhoods — traditions dating back to the 16th century.
Around midnight on Maundy Thursday into the early hours of Good Friday, Hermandad de la Macarena — founded in 1595 and one of the most revered brotherhoods — leaves its basilica and moves slowly through the city in a procession that lasts up to fourteen hours.

You witness the Virgen de la Esperanza — her 17th-century image with glass tears — carried beneath a canopy of candles. Trumpets sound, drums pulse, incense drifts through the streets. At times a saeta — a raw flamenco lament sung from a balcony — falls into the silence. This experience places you at street level at a few emblematic points in the passage of La Macarena through Seville. With a knowledgeable local Seville guide, you’re in the flow of the procession — at close range to the nazarenos and pasos.

 For many, La Macarena is a symbol of Seville itself, generations have brought their prayers, fears and hopes to her. She is worshipped as the protector of bullfighters, recipient of emerald brooches, and bearer of three mantles worn in succession. Her float advances at the pace of the men beneath it, their feet visible below draped velvet.

You’re positioned close by and sometimes within the procession as you cross from one point to another, and experiencing its rhythm. In Alcobaça, hand-painted ceramics developed in a monastery town that became an important pottery center from the 18th century onward, known for exuberant floral forms and richly glazed surfaces. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. Tucked inside a former 1920s textile factory in Colonia Doctores, Laguna is one of Mexico City’s most vibrant creative hubs — and one that few travelers even know exists. Renovated in 2018 by Mexican firm Productora, the building is now a hybrid urban factory, housing studios, galleries, showrooms, and cultural spaces — but from the street, you'd never guess what’s inside.

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

The Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) is one of Seville’s most iconic landmarks, situated along the banks of the Guadalquivir River. This 13th-century dodecagonal tower was originally built by the Almohads as a military watchtower and was later used to control access to the river. Its name, “Tower of Gold,” is believed to stem from the golden gleam it once reflected off the river or possibly from the gold brought from the New World that was stored in its vaults. Today, the Torre del Oro is a maritime museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Seville's rich naval history.
 Highlights of Torre del Oro:

1. Panoramic Views: Climb to the top of the tower for stunning 360-degree views of Seville’s skyline, including landmarks like the Giralda and the cathedral. The vantage point also offers a unique perspective of the Guadalquivir River.

Chile’s Puritama Hot Springs are a hidden oasis in the Atacama Desert, offering a series of geothermal pools surrounded by lush vegetation in an otherwise arid landscape. Located about 30 km (19 miles) from San Pedro de Atacama, these natural thermal baths are rich in minerals and maintain a soothing temperature between 28–33°C (82–91°F). With wooden walkways connecting the pools and breathtaking canyon views, Puritama provides a relaxing and rejuvenating experience in the heart of the desert.
