In this mindful bread-making session in Athens, you will recreate ‘pelanos,’ the sacred bread of the ancients, offered to honor the gifts of nature. This transformative journey takes you back to the Great Mysteries of Eleusis, where the myths of Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, and her daughter Persephone come to life.

According to the myth, when Demeter found Persephone, who had been taken by Hades, the god of the underworld, she gifted humanity with the grain of wheat and taught them bread-making to escape famine.

You will engage in hands-on bread-making, learning traditional techniques passed down from ancient Greece. Each knead and fold becomes an act of connection—with food, community and the earth.

You'll conclude the experience by sharing the bread with thoughtfully curated seasonal dishes, gathering in a circle to create a mindful ritual. This journey connects your body, the wheat, and the rich history of Athens and Eleusis, bringing ancient traditions into the present.

During the Mysteries of Eleusis, a sacred celebration honoring Demeter, it’s said that participants would fast as part of their rituals. Their sole nourishment was pelanos, a special bread made from barley and wheat. Prepared by the participants themselves, it served both as sustenance and as offering to the goddess, symbolizing gratitude.

This experience invites you to recreate pelanos, learning traditional techniques passed down through generations that were once integral to temple celebrations. This full-day expedition from Lisbon to Mafra, Ericeira and Sobreiro takes you through Portugal’s rich history, architectural beauty and vibrant coastal life. 

You will start at the awe-inspiring Mafra Royal Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its monumental Baroque architecture, and the biggest building in Portugal. Commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century during Portugal’s Golden Age of wealth from Brazil, this vast complex includes a Royal Palace, a grand Basilica, a convent for 300 friars, and one of the world’s most stunning library, home to over 35,000 rare books. 

Next, in the surrounding village of Sobreiro, you’ll step back in time at José Franco’s Traditional Town, a captivating display of regional life through life-sized buildings and animated ceramic miniatures.

The Mafra Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most important Baroque structure (and the largest building) in Portugal. It was commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century, funded by the wealth coming from Brazil. The complex is organized around central interior courtyards, where the Basilica, Convent, and Palace meet and intersect. This architectural complex represents one of the artistic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Portugal.

The Mafra Palace-Basilica-Convent is unique for its scale, sumptuousness, and quality of architecture and decoration. Some highlights include the Infirmary, the Throne Hall, and the Library, which holds about 35,000 rare books. The Basilica is adorned with a unique collection of Italian Baroque statues (the largest outside Italy), six historical pipe organs, and two carillons composed of nearly 100 bells.

The building is also a very important landmark in Portuguese history. It originally reflected the wealth and power of King João V but also represents the lives of several other kings who spent time there, in the surrounding gardens or the nearby royal hunting park. King Manuel II spent his last night in Portugal in one of its rooms before leaving the kingdom forever after the fall of the monarchy in 1910, departing from the nearby Ericeira village beach.

The Majestic Heart of Mafra

The Cerco Garden stands on one of the flanks of the Convent-Palace. Initially designed and inspired by Versailles, only a small part of the garden was completed. Despite this, it remains a very pleasant space, featuring a century-old irrigation noria, reflective water mirrors, a vegetable medicinal garden once used by monks, and a leafy park surrounding it.

Cerco Garden serves as the perfect transition between the vast, walled former Royal Hunting area, known as Tapada Real, and the monumental Convent-Palace. It beautifully combines nature, agriculture, and gardening. The forest and gardens span over eight hectares, offering shady corners, waterfalls, and even a unique vegetable garden—Horta dos Frades—where plants were once used to produce medicinal products during the Convent’s time.

Close to Mafra, José Franco's "Traditional Village" is a clay-built, miniature representation of traditional life in the region. Sculptor José Franco (1920–2009) dedicated his life to the art of modeling clay, creating a village that perfectly captures the essence of regional life. This life-sized village includes typical buildings and activities, such as a windmill, butcher's shop, water mill, blacksmith's forge, threshing floor, tavern, and carpenter’s workshop, all reflecting the architecture and trades of the past.

This half-day wine and gastronomy experience in Mendoza includes a wine tasting, olive oil factory tour and tasting, and a delicious lunch in the middle of the Argentine countryside. This links together three artisanal staples of Mendoza’s table — wine, olive oil, and bread. 

The first stop is a tour and tasting at a traditional winery carefully selected by Julieta. This winery is a small-scale affair and remains in the hands of the original family. She’ll take you on a journey through time, explaining the evolution of these garments and how advances in textile manufacturing shaped their design. You'll explore different types of kimono, learn about their occasions and etiquette, and see up-close the textiles — brocade, silk, hand-dyed patterns — that make each piece distinct.

Then comes the transformation: choosing from Clémentine’s collection of vintage obi, you’ll design your own modern accessory — a pouch that breathes new life into traditional materials, letting you carry a piece of Japan with you.

While kimono remain an important part of Japanese tradition, many are worn only once — at weddings or formal events — then stored away and forgotten. Clémentine’s workshop honors these garments and the artisans behind them by giving the fabric new purpose.

Her shop is rooted in upcycling, but it’s more than sustainability: it’s about artful transformation. She selects obi with patterns too bold or ornate for modern daily wear, and turns them into striking, functional accessories. In doing so, she reconnects this heritage craft with everyday life.

A trained designer with a deep reverence for Japanese textiles, Clémentine approaches each piece with care. She believes this process honors the artisans who created the textiles, allowing their art to be seen, admired, and used once again. By guiding you to create something beautiful and personal, she invites you to participate in a living tradition — one shaped by both preservation and creativity.

 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. “In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. Travelers are interested in how we live, how we spend the day, what we do.” This itinerary is João’s answer to that challenge: an immersive route where nature, food, craft, and memory guide the pace.

If you're looking for an unconventional neighborhood with art galleries, parks to hang out in, and lots of young, trendy people, Newtown is the place for you. I basically spend all my weekends there, drinking coffee, going to book clubs, working at the community kitchen Lentil as Anything, and having a beer at one of the lively bars at night. 

Australians love vintage – which makes Newtown the heaven for vintage clothes, cameras, vinyl records, and much more. I’ve got some new sandals, a polaroid camera, and jewelry, all unique pieces at an amazing price. Worth the hype!

You can easily get there by train, it's just a ride from Town Hall, or simply stay a few days in one of the hostels in Newtown.

San Spiridione Church is a testament to the city's multiculturalism. This magnificent Serbian Orthodox church, dedicated to Saint Spyridon, a Greek Cypriot saint, showcases a splendid Byzantine style that dates back to 1869, reflecting the city's unique position at the crossroads of Europe's major ethnic and religious communities. Having a background in biology, coming to the Galapagos was absolutely a bucket list trip. The trip is worth going if you have three to seven days, depending on how much you want to see. I was there for three days and I could have discovered more islands. 

It is important to have a tour guide as you are not allowed to venture outside the town without one. 

Definitely worth a visit!
