The Japanese art of visible mending is sashiko, a technique that combines the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi with the always en vogue concept of sustainable practices. In her charming studio among the winding streets of a western Tokyo neighborhood, your host Keiko has been practicing sashiko and teaching students from all over the world the techniques used to make beautiful patchwork on clothing and other textiles.

In this three-hour experience, you’ll enjoy making a Fernwayer exclusive sashiko pouch designed by Keiko as you chat with Keiko and learn about the fascinating art of sashiko mending. The pace of the workshop is relaxed to allow for plenty of one-on-one coaching, and there is a private experience option for those who want a truly exclusive experience. Mexico

You are invited into a private house in charming San Miguel Chapultepec, where the rooms reveals facets of Mexico’s textile traditions, conceived as lived context. This visit traces materials and fibers — cotton, wool, ixtle — alongside weaving techniques that predate the Spanish conquest and continue today, including the backstrap loom still used in weaving communities across Mexico. You explore natural dyes such as cochineal and indigo, along with regional patterns and histories.

With your hosts at Onora, you examine how motifs, colors, and structures communicate community identity across Mexico — signaling origin, status, and cosmology. Textiles move beyond decoration into language and symbol — present in ceremonial dress, domestic life, and intergenerational knowledge. Some pieces require months of hand-weaving, their complexity visible only through close observation. The house becomes a setting in which contemporary design and ancestral weaving practices are placed in dialogue.

This is a curated visit that invites you to appreciate Mexican textiles and materials, and understand how they function within today’s lived environments. Lorena and her colleagues work in long-term, horizontal partnerships with a network of more than 725 artisans from 183 communities across 28 Mexican states — relationships built on respect, transparency and shared creativity. These collaborators are involved in design conversations and credited for their work — an approach that reframes craft as shared authorship rather than anonymous tradition.

Rather than presenting textiles as aesthetic objects alone, the experience situates them within worldview and practice. Each piece is discussed in relation to the region that produced it — the dyes, fibers, techniques, and cultural meanings embedded in its structure. Lorena de la Piedra studied sociology and textile art and is a weaver herself, but what really defines her work is time spent alongside artisans. Since 2013, she has been working directly with makers, learning through shared processes, conversations, and everyday practice. After living in Oaxaca for eight years and working at the Textile Museum of Oaxaca, she developed a deep connection to the region’s textile traditions and the communities who sustain them.

She invites visitors to slow down, get their hands involved, and experience craft from the inside. Whether through textiles or ceramics, the focus is on learning directly from artisans – understanding materials, techniques, and the stories behind them. Each experience is designed as a space for exchange, curiosity, and meaningful connection. Her colleagues at Onora collaborate with artisans from across the country to create contemporary textiles and objects, using traditional techniques that reflect their cultural identity.

Argentina

This private, 4-hour ceramics experience invites you to create a decorative piece while enjoying a few glasses of wine and empanadas. Mendoza is as celebrated for its thriving arts community as it is for its world-renowned Malbec wines. You will learn about the artisan process of ceramics, from modeling to decoration, culminating in a unique piece to take home as a reminder of your time in Mendoza. This may be a plate or a cup; Lucila will discuss the options with you prior to starting.

In addition to exploring your creativity, you will also sample wines from local Mendoza wineries and enjoy delicious locally made empanadas, making this a full experience for the senses. No previous experience is needed—just a desire to enjoy and learn.

During Semana Santa, you watch one of Seville’s most important traditions unfold from a private balcony.

This exclusive annual experience is offered during Holy Week (March 29 – April 5, 2026) with limited availability each day.

Semana Santa in Seville dates to 16th century and blends social gathering with deep religious devotion. Solemn processions wind through narrow streets, organized by 70 of Seville’s church brotherhoods carrying large pasos — elaborate floats depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ or honoring the Virgin Mary. Candles, music, incense and the steady rhythm of processions transform the city throughout the week. In Seville, it has long been customary for local families to watch the processions from private balconies along the route.

The experience lasts about 90 minutes. From this vantage point, and depending on the day, you observe one or two processions pass below while a Sevillian host explains the traditions, symbolism and structure of the processions.

Semana Santa is a deeply rooted tradition. The pasos carried through the streets contain sculptures that are centuries old. Beneath them walk costaleros, who train throughout the year to carry the heavy structures while remaining hidden beneath the float. Around them move the nazarenos, penitents in tall hoods whose presence has been part of the procession for over five centuries. Watching from a balcony is a unique experience. From above you see the formation and choreography of the procession, and its rhythm of movement.

In Seville, balcony viewing during Semana Santa developed because the streets are extremely narrow, the processions move slowly, and crowds became difficult to navigate—even for locals. Families along the route began opening their balconies to relatives and guests. Today many of those same buildings still host balcony viewing along the official procession route. With access to one of these private balconies, you’re able to take part in this long-standing tradition.

His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

In the heart of Fes, the Chouara and Sidi Moussa tanneries stand as enduring relics of the Middle Ages, their practices largely unchanged since that era. Here, the ancient art of leather tanning transforms raw hides into beautifully supple fabrics through a strikingly colorful yet arduous process. As you navigate the narrow alleys leading to the tanneries, the air grows thick with a pungent aroma, a hallmark of this traditional craft. Things to look for:

1. The Chouara Tannery, perhaps the most famous in Fes, alongside Sidi Moussa, offers a rare glimpse into the labor-intensive process of leather production. Hundreds of workers from multiple generations of families toil from sunrise to sunset. They labor over open vats filled with a vivid mosaic of natural dyes and pigeon dung, an essential component in softening the leather. This spectacle of color and effort unfolds beneath the Moroccan sun, casting a palette that feels almost surreal against the earthy tones of the Medina.

2. Visitors are handed a sprig of mint to ward off the overwhelming smells. The sensory overload is part of the experience!

3. Guides explain the dyeing process, pointing out the use of natural ingredients like saffron, poppy flower, indigo, and henna. 

4. After dyeing, the leathers are laid out to dry on the nearby rooftops, creating an iconic and photogenic scene that defines the visual landscape of the tanneries. 

5. A visit to the tanneries is an education in the tenacity and skill of the Moroccan artisans who maintain these centuries-old techniques. Despite modern advancements, these methods have resisted change, preserved by the artisans’ dedication to their heritage. 

As you leave, the sight of the vibrant leathers, the sound of workers chanting in rhythm, and the smell of natural tannins linger, leaving a lasting impression of a craft preserved in time. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes as the area can be wet and slippery.

The Tanneries of Fes

A road trip through Spain is literally the best option for those looking for a local, less touristic experience. You can basically rent a car anywhere you want – we started in Barcelona, heading down the coast, and taking stops in Ebro Delta and Denia and other sleepy beach towns down the road. One of our highlights was the Spanish town of Cartagena – a historical hub with beautiful angled roads, traditional culture to explore (expect to be invited to some Cerveza by the locals), and history lessons about Phoenician traders, Roman soldiers, and Christian Reconquistas. If you have some days left, visiting Andalusia is a must. It's by far the most beautiful region in Spain and is known for its majestic horse breed, pristine beaches, hot weather, and super friendly culture. 
All in all, it took us two weeks to get down the coast – but you can make it in a week as well – though you might have less time to explore, sunbathe, and learn about the history of Spain

On the epic Ring Road drive (A1) in East Iceland, there’s a black sand beach called Stokksnes, just a few kilometres from Höfn. 

A gravel road gets you to a tiny cafeteria - where you can pay a small fee to drive further in till the edge of the water.

Patagonia – the land where the earth ends – must be one of the most unique places to visit in this world. I definitely felt this way, when I visited the glaciers, mountains, and rivers around. It’s a stunning place, and even though it’s quite hard to get there, the whole trip is completely worthwhile.

Patagonian hares, hawks, red foxes, geese, black-necked swans, flamingos, woodpeckers, skunks, pumas, condors, and the near extinct huemul deer – this place is for nature lovers. We’ve spent 1 month in Patagonia, exploring the fauna and flora, zipping warm chocolate next to the chimney of our bed and breakfast, and breathing the fresh air.

Save packing lightly for another trip – visiting the snowy landscape in Southern Argentina, you want to come as prepared as possible. Scarves, gloves, a winter jacket, boots, and lots of exchange clothes are a must.

Visit a rare phenomenon

Granada, Spain, is home to the Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte, an open-air museum that offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional cave dwellings of the Sacromonte district. 3. Spectacular panoramic views of the Alhambra, Albaicín, and Sierra Nevada mountains make this museum one of the best spots in Granada for photography.

4. Regular workshops and cultural events, including pottery demonstrations and flamenco performances, provide an interactive way to experience local traditions.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the late afternoon for the best lighting and stay for a flamenco performance in the caves nearby to experience the soul of Sacromonte after dark.
