The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established traditional Japanese restaurant before heading to the Ifuji Ningyo Shop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher will be a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

Step into a historic bookbinding workshop near Cagliari, Sardinia, where Gaia will welcome you into her family’s 50-year-old artisan space. In this hands-on experience, you'll craft your own travel notebook using traditional bookbinding techniques and authentic Sardinian fabrics.

You'll explore different types of kimono, learn about their occasions and etiquette, and see up-close the textiles — brocade, silk, hand-dyed patterns — that make each piece distinct.

Then comes the transformation: choosing from Clémentine’s collection of vintage obi, you’ll design your own modern accessory — a pouch that breathes new life into traditional materials, letting you carry a piece of Japan with you.

This experience offers a rare opportunity to explore Cappadocia’s rich artistic traditions while engaging directly with local artisans. Granada, Spain, is home to the Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte, an open-air museum that offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional cave dwellings of the Sacromonte district. Nestled in the hills overlooking the Alhambra and the Darro Valley, this unique museum showcases the history, culture, and lifestyle of the Granada Gitano (Roma) community, who have lived in these caves for centuries. Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the Antalya Museum, one of the country’s most important archaeological museums, showcasing thousands of years of history from ancient civilizations that once thrived in the region. Covering spanning prehistoric, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras, the museum is a treasure trove of artifacts, statues, and mosaics, many of which were discovered in nearby sites like Perge, Aspendos, and Termessos. With its well-curated exhibits and stunning sculptures, the Antalya Museum is a must-visit for history lovers.


1. The Hall of Gods displays an incredible collection of Roman statues of deities such as Zeus, Hermes, and Aphrodite, many unearthed from the ancient city of Perge.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the day to explore the museum at a leisurely pace without crowds. Combine your trip with a visit to the nearby Konyaaltı Beach for a relaxing break after your history-filled experience.
