Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. Antalya, Turkey, is home to the magnificent Hadrian’s Gate, a 2nd-century Roman triumphal arch that serves as the grand entrance to the city’s historic Kaleiçi (Old Town). Built in 130 AD to honor Emperor Hadrian’s visit, this three-arched marble gateway is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in Turkey. With its intricate carvings, towering Corinthian columns, and ancient road beneath, Hadrian’s Gate is a must-see for history lovers and photographers alike.


1. The ornate marble façade, adorned with intricate floral and geometric carvings, showcases Roman craftsmanship at its finest.

2. The three grand archways, framed by towering Corinthian columns, create a dramatic entry into Antalya’s charming Old Town.

The charming, well-preserved streetscapes of the heritage town in Old Lijiang Is perfect for getting lost  The winding streets lure you in - and shops selling Tiquanyin tea, handmade paper, musical drums, souvenirs and food vie for the attention of tourists. 

The Naxi people of Lijiang are proud, artistic and musically talented. It's a matriarchal society, one that I relate well to, and I enjoyed my interactions with the wise women I meet.

In the market square in Lijiang Old Town, groups of Naxi women get together to perform a few dances. There is no clear structure for their activity, and the women seem to be on their own schedule - some leave after a couple of dances, others hang around. Besides their traditional costume, what is common among them is their energy and zest for life.

It’s a new day in Sossusvlei. And I am rising towards the sky, timed perfectly with the rising sun, in a wicker basket attached to a hot air balloon. It’s my first balloon ride!

The sand dunes of the Namib desert are taking their time turning orange in the glow of dawn. Our pilot tells us that in Namibia, the only time one can fly a balloon is the sunrise hour. She can’t steer the balloon but she can control the altitude, and depending on the wind channels at each altitude, choose her preferred “course”. 

It’s more peaceful than I imagined. The sound of quiet is unnerving, but no one in the gondola wants to break the peace. In fact, the only sound to be heard is the feverish clicking of cameras. I could get used to seeing the world from this perspective.

Visiting Quito, a detour should be made to the “ACTUAL Equator” museum. Only a 50 meters from where it was thought the equator passed, this used science to actually find the equator. The tour guide explains a bit about Ecuador and then shows why this is the center of the earth, with a few fun examples. The water really does flush in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere and apparently this is due to the Earth’s centripetal force.

The Wine Museum Koutsoyannopoulos, located in Vothonas village, is a fascinating underground museum that tells the story of Santorini’s rich winemaking heritage. Set in a natural cave eight meters below ground and stretching 300 meters long, this family-run museum offers a unique journey through the history, culture, and traditions of winemaking on the island. It’s an immersive experience perfect for wine lovers and anyone curious about Santorini’s unique volcanic terroir. 
1. The underground museum takes visitors through a series of exhibits showcasing winemaking equipment, tools, and scenes from the daily lives of Santorini’s vintners from the 17th to 20th centuries. 
2. Life-sized dioramas and audio guides (available in multiple languages) bring the history of winemaking to life, with engaging stories and vivid details.

The Accademia Gallery in Florence, renowned for housing Michelangelo's David, is a treasure trove of art, history, and culture. As the second most visited museum in Florence, it offers a collection that includes a $16 million dollar violin and significant works of the Renaissance and beyond​​. Go on a journey of discovery through various art periods, techniques, and cultural histories. Here are our top recommendations:

1 -  As the focal point of the Accademia, Michelangelo’s David is a representation of strength, beauty, and human achievement. Created from a single block of marble, this masterpiece symbolizes the Renaissance ideals of humanism and is renowned for its anatomical precision and the portrayal of David before his battle with Goliath.

2 - The Hall of Prisoners features unfinished works by Michelangelo, known as "Prisoners" or "Slaves". These sculptures were intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II but were never completed. They offer a unique insight into Michelangelo's process, where the figures seem to be struggling to free themselves from the marble, embodying the concept of the "unfinished" in art​​​​.

3 - The Gipsoteca is a collection of plaster casts by the 19th-century sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini. This room showcases the creative process of sculpting, with numerous busts and models used by Bartolini and his students.
