Just across the water from Piazza San Marco lies San Giorgio Maggiore, once known as Cypress Island. Palladio’s luminous church seems to float on the lagoon, housing Tintoretto’s dramatic canvases. This walk through Chartrons traces Bordeaux’s wine-trading past, culminating in a tasting inside the historic négociant museum. The walk begins at Esplanade des Quinconces, where Victoria introduces Bordeaux as a city shaped by its river and by centuries of maritime commerce. The Chartrons quays, a stretch of 18th-century façades, once framed the work of wine merchants and brokers linked to the Port de la Lune.

Turning inland, Rue Notre-Dame shows how trade and domestic life overlapped: cellars below, families above, and today antique shops that echo the district’s merchant past. The church of Saint-Louis des Chartrons and nearby market square mark a neighborhood built around exchange, storage, and early structures of Bordeaux’s wine economy.

Calaveras, ceramic skulls, and ofrenda elements are discussed both as vessels of memory, shaped by local belief and family practice, as well as artistic objects of exceptional craft.

Lorena de la Piedra studied sociology and textile art and is a weaver herself, but what really defines her work is time spent alongside artisans. Since 2013, she has been working directly with makers, learning through shared processes, conversations, and everyday practice. After living in Oaxaca for eight years and working at the Textile Museum of Oaxaca, she developed a deep connection to the region’s textile traditions and the communities who sustain them.

She invites visitors to slow down, get their hands involved, and experience craft from the inside. Whether through textiles or ceramics, the focus is on learning directly from artisans – understanding materials, techniques, and the stories behind them. Each experience is designed as a space for exchange, curiosity, and meaningful connection. Her colleagues at Onora collaborate with artisans from across the country to create contemporary textiles and objects, using traditional techniques that reflect their cultural identity.

Argentina

This four-hour walking tour in Buenos Aires focuses on three iconic neighborhoods: Recoleta, Retiro, and San Telmo. While renowned landmarks shape the route, it’s the quiet treasures only locals know that form the heart of this experience. You drive to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, surrounded by a moat of flowing water. Renowned for its brocantes - over 300 antique dealers trading year-round - it draws collectors, designers, and food lovers. Much more than a flea market, professional dealers tastefully set out chandeliers, linens, paintings, furniture and fragments of domestic history along canal-side streets. The town dates to the 12th century, when fishermen built huts on stilts above marshland. By the 18th century, canals lined with giant water wheels powered silk factories and paper mills. 

Midday, you pause for lunch, then continue to Avignon, UNESCO World Heritage city and capital of the Vaucluse. Within its medieval walls, streets narrow beneath pale stone façades and open onto shaded squares. The Palais des Papes rises above the rooftops. You explore the historic center, old streets such as Rue des Teinturiers, the cathedral, and historic gardens overlooking Rhône Valley, the Vaucluse and the Luberon before returning.

Peru

Come and explore the history of Lima’s Pueblo Libre district through its food. This central area is where Peru’s independence from Spain took shape in the early 19th century, which led to its renaming from Magdalena Vieja to “Free Town.” Désirée will explain the events leading up to July 28, 1821, and how this part of Lima was first settled by pre-Columbian cultures. She will take you to Quinta de los Libertadores, which served as residence and political headquarters for independence leaders such as José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar, as well as to the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology, and History of Peru.

There’s a lot of history to absorb, which is why Désirée has designed this walking tour as a food odyssey. She will accompany you to a local market to taste juices, fruits, Andean breads, and to learn about medicinal herbs still used today. You’ll watch ceviche being prepared at the market before tasting it, and stop at a traditional tavern for pisco and local bites.

This historic district is one of the least visited in Lima, despite having staged some of Peru’s most important political moments. Pueblo Libre played a key role during the independence period, hosting leaders who shaped the new republic decades after the rebellion of Túpac Amaru II had challenged colonial rule. It was in this context that the motto “Firme y Feliz por la Unión” (Firm and Happy for the Union) emerged, reflecting early efforts to define national identity and cohesion after independence.

Désirée grew up in Pueblo Libre and sheds light on these moments of history through food. Beyond monuments, she introduces you to families who have run market stalls for decades. We arrive by RIB boat from Longyearbyen, dressed in survival suits, across a choppy Arctic Sea, with puffins and seals for company.

Isfjord Radio on Cape Linné, is an abandoned strategic communications station, with a decidedly interesting past, now converted into a stylish expedition lodge. 

Nothing could have prepared me for the extreme sense of isolation and wilderness. 

Imagine sitting all alone at latitude 79 degrees north and watching polar bears prowling outside the kitchen window. Two days ago, that is exactly what the staff at Isfjord Radio did.  After all, Svalbard’s travel slogan reads: “3000 polar bears, 2500 humans”. 

Hiking into the middle of nowhere, or along the coast looking for 1500-kilo walruses, is done with licensed guides, a couple of mandatory rifles for protection and huskies for company. It is a beautiful, stark landscape, filled with mystery and a sense of the unknown.

The Coffee Triangle - which includes the pueblo towns of Salento and Filandia - has its own culture, diversity, food and of course, coffee.

I was told that I would find the best cup of coffee in the world in Colombia’s Zona Cafetera. I found some of the tastiest beans in little vintage cafes with vintage coffee machines. The coffee plantations nearby offered tasting sessions too. Part of the fun Is to climb on the back of a colorful Jeep to get to the plantations.

On the Coffee Road, in the colorful town of Salento, the biggest attraction - besides the coffee and the arepas - is its traditional architecture of one- and two-story buildings, with walls painted white, and doors and window frames in the brightest of candy colors.
