The Venice Carnevale has deep-rooted origins dating back to the era of the "Serenissima." Your journey into Thessaloniki’s flavors begins in a historic neighborhood with a welcome glass of mastiha served in a long-standing local venue. Over Northern Greek meze and a first glass of wine, you are introduced to regional grape varieties, drinking customs, and the food identity of a port city shaped by trade, migration, and exchange.

Then, you will gather around the communal table in Andrea's studio, where she will share a curated selection of mezcals. For each mezcal you taste, you’ll learn about its region, agave variety, the people who make it, the cultural significance, and the production techniques behind it.

This photography experience takes you front and backstage at an iconic tango show in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires. Hosted by a professional photographer, the activity starts with an introductory talk in a San Telmo cafe where you'll learn about the camera settings and techniques required for shooting moving objects in low light. After this, you will walk a short distance to the theater where the rest of the evening plays out over photography, art, dance, and conversation.

Once seated at a premium table with a clear view of the stage, you will photograph the dancers and orchestra without obstructions. Premium beverages and ice cream is served during the show, while Bernardo mentors you through the photography and shares cultural insights into tango culture. At a convenient moment, you will access the backstage area for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and photograph the tango dancers while they prepare their make-up and costumes ahead the show.

Known locally as the Entrudo, this vibrant celebration brings people together dressed in ancient folk masks, dancing to traditional music, and taking part in a one-day gathering rooted in centuries-old customs.

Your day begins with a scenic drive from Coimbra to the village. Once there, you’ll wander through the cobblestone streets and visit the interpretation center, where you’ll learn about the cultural heritage of Portugal’s schist villages and their Carnival traditions.

You then join villagers as they parade through the streets wearing handmade cork masks, teasing the crowds with humorous verses. After the festivities, you’ll share lunch with locals celebrating alongside you before returning to Coimbra.

This is a rare invitation to step inside a living ritual. Aigra Nova is part of the Aldeias do Xisto, a network of schist villages where life is shaped by a tight-knit community and a strong connection to the land. Here, rural traditions are still kept alive, including the Entrudo — a rare form of Carnival that has survived through memory and the villagers’ enduring spirit.

Alexandra introduces you to the masked villagers and explains the meaning behind their handcrafted cork masks, made from the village’s own oak trees. She takes you through local houses and the interpretation center, talking you through the customs preserved across Portugal’s schist villages, while giving you time to take in this once-a-year celebration.

In the past, it was mostly men who took part in the masquerade. As many residents migrated to the cities, women and girls began joining in to keep the tradition and ensure its continuity.

remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Catalonia: Barcelona & Beyond

7-day itinerary in Catalonia through Barcelona, Priorat, Siurana, Ebro Delta, Girona, and Cadaqués.

Iceland

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.

Ice Caving

Just 30 kilometers from Marrakech, Ourika Valley is a refreshing retreat into the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, offering scenic landscapes, rushing waterfalls, and traditional Berber villages. The valley is known for its cool mountain air, lush greenery, and riverside cafés, making it a popular getaway from the heat and bustle of the city. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing day trip or an active hiking adventure, Ourika Valley is the perfect blend of nature and culture.

1. A hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls takes visitors along rocky trails and wooden bridges, leading to a series of cascading falls surrounded by lush greenery and mountain views.

2. A traditional Berber market in Tnine Ourika, held every Monday, fills the village with colorful stalls selling fresh produce, handmade crafts, and fragrant spices, offering a lively glimpse into local life.

3. A visit to a women’s argan oil cooperative showcases the traditional methods of extracting Morocco’s famous argan oil, with opportunities to sample and purchase natural beauty products.

4. A scenic riverside lunch at a local café allows visitors to enjoy Moroccan dishes like tagine and mint tea while dipping their feet in the cool, flowing water of the Ourika River.

5. A drive through the valley in spring reveals cherry and almond blossoms in full bloom, creating a breathtaking contrast against the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for mild temperatures and lush scenery. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended for hiking the waterfalls. Arriving early in the morning helps avoid crowds, especially on weekends. Bringing cash is useful for shopping in markets and small villages, where card payments are rarely accepted.

Ourika Valley

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the vibrant Coyoacán Neighborhood, a bohemian district known for its cobblestone streets, colorful colonial architecture, and rich artistic history. Once a rural village, Coyoacán has retained its small-town charm despite being part of the sprawling capital. It’s famously associated with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, whose legacies are deeply embedded in the neighborhood’s cultural fabric. Today, it’s a lively hub for art lovers, foodies, and anyone seeking a more relaxed, authentic side of Mexico City.


1. Visit the iconic Frida Kahlo Museum (La Casa Azul), where the legendary artist was born and lived, showcasing her personal artifacts, paintings, and studio space.

2. Explore the Jardín Centenario and Plaza Hidalgo, the neighborhood’s central squares, surrounded by vibrant markets, cafés, and stunning colonial-era churches like San Juan Bautista.

3. The Coyoacán Market offers traditional Mexican street food, including tostadas, elotes, and the famous churros, alongside handcrafted souvenirs and local art.

4. Discover the Leon Trotsky Museum, the former home of the Russian revolutionary who spent his final years in exile in Coyoacán.

5. Colorful murals, quirky shops, and cobbled alleyways make this area a haven for street photography and offer endless creative inspiration.

Visitor Tip: Visit on weekends for the liveliest atmosphere, but arrive early to beat the crowds at popular spots like La Casa Azul. Don’t miss trying a traditional café de olla (Mexican spiced coffee) from a local café.

Coyoacán Neighborhood

Essaouira, Morocco, is home to its bustling Port of Essaouira, a vibrant hub of the city’s maritime culture and a must-visit destination for food lovers and photographers. Famous for its bright blue fishing boats, the port offers an authentic glimpse into the city’s seafaring traditions, with fishermen hauling in fresh catches daily. Adjacent to the port, the Fresh Seafood Market tempts visitors with displays of just-caught fish, shrimp, octopus, and lobster, all ready to be cooked on the spot by local vendors.

1. Watch the colorful blue fishing boats return from sea, creating a picture-perfect scene and offering plenty of opportunities for vibrant photography.

2. Stroll through the fresh seafood stalls, where vendors display their catch of the day, from sardines and sea bass to exotic shellfish.

3. Enjoy a true local experience by choosing your seafood and having it grilled to perfection at one of the nearby market stalls—served simply with lemon, bread, and local spices.

4. The port’s historic ramparts and Skala de la Ville offer panoramic views of the ocean, fishing boats, and bustling market activity below.

5. Get a glimpse into daily life as fishermen mend their nets or haggle with buyers, offering an authentic look at Essaouira’s maritime traditions.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the morning to catch the fishermen returning with their fresh catch, and bring cash for small purchases. Don’t forget to try grilled sardines—Essaouira’s most iconic seafood snack!

Port of Essaouira

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!

Walking Tour: Sagrada Familia

The Brancacci Chapel, tucked away in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, is renowned for its frescoes. These masterpieces, primarily by Masaccio and Masolino, mark a pivotal moment in the history of art, showcasing the early Renaissance's break from Gothic conventions - a must-visit for art lovers: 
1 - The Brancacci Chapel's walls are adorned with frescoes that revolutionized Renaissance art. Masaccio's 'Expulsion from the Garden of Eden' and 'The Tribute Money' are particularly notable for their use of perspective and chiaroscuro, techniques that added a new dimension and realism to painting. These works had a profound influence on later artists, including Michelangelo and Raphael.
2 - The frescoes are a result of the collaboration between Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi. While Masolino initiated the project with a softer, more Gothic style, Masaccio's contributions introduced a more naturalistic approach. Lippi, completing the chapel after Masaccio's untimely death, brought his unique touch, bridging the gap between the early and high Renaissance styles.
3 - A Tale of Redemption: The frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel depict scenes from the life of St. Peter, serving as a visual narrative of sin and redemption. This thematic focus reflects the religious and cultural values of the era, offering visitors a glimpse into the spiritual and artistic climate of early Renaissance Florence.
4 - The Brancacci Chapel underwent extensive restoration in the 1980s, bringing back the vibrancy and detail of the original frescoes. This restoration work also makes the chapel an interesting study in art conservation, highlighting the challenges and techniques involved in preserving priceless artworks.

Brancacci Chapel

Buenos Aires is one of the southernmost capitals in the world and also an exciting city. Although there are many ways to explore Argentine city life, biking is the most fun.

Biking is free in Buenos Aires, at least for a few hours. Using an app I downloaded to my phone, I spent the next few days biking around the Botanical Gardens, the best museums, art galleries, El Caminito, the riverfront, and the city's largest flea market (on weekends only!). While you’re at it, you can also visit one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world in Recoleta.

The bike paths are well developed, and if you follow the signs, you'll find the main points quickly. Be careful, helmets are not available. If you want to be on the safe side, rent one in one of the bike rentals.

Cycling through Buenos Aires

Colombia

Fruity, dry, red, white, sweet, sparkling — wine is delicious, and the best way to discover what this powerful potion has to offer is to take a bike tour through the vineyards (yes, on a bike). Mendoza is the best place to choose one of the hundreds of tour operators. 

Mendoza is the most popular wine-growing province in Argentina. And Bodega Tempus Alba has a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes, and the majestic Andes Mountains provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful pictures of vineyards to be found anywhere in the world.

Whether you're biking or not, a proper tasting tour will give you enough wine to come home tipsy. That's why I recommend eating well before your tour and taking a break when the magic of wine goes to your head.

I also spent some time hiking in the area, exploring the small villages in the area, and eating the best Argentine empanadas around. A trip for the senses, for sure.

Vineyards and boozy tours

Stand in awe of the colossal machinery that once powered the city, now standing as silent witnesses to Rome's industrial past. Rome’s Power Plant to Museum

The Guadalquivir River Walk in Seville offers a peaceful yet vibrant way to experience the city’s charm while enjoying scenic views along one of Spain’s most historic rivers. Stretching along the banks of the Guadalquivir, this popular promenade links some of Seville’s most famous attractions, offering a blend of history, culture, and leisure activities. The river itself played a key role in Seville’s development, once serving as the main conduit for trade with the New World. Today, the walk is a favorite for both locals and tourists looking for relaxation and a touch of Seville’s past.

Highlights of the Guadalquivir River Walk:

1. Torre del Oro: Begin your walk near this iconic 13th-century tower. Its golden glow and rich history make it a perfect starting point. From here, enjoy views of the river and the surrounding monuments.

2. Triana Bridge and Market: Cross the picturesque Puente de Triana to visit the traditional Triana neighborhood, known for its flamenco roots and lively market. The market is a great spot for fresh produce, local crafts, and authentic tapas.

3. Parque de María Luisa: Along the river, you'll find this lush park, perfect for a rest amidst palm trees, fountains, and beautiful gardens. Nearby is the iconic Plaza de España, another must-see.

4. River Cruises and Water Activities: If walking isn’t enough, hop on a riverboat cruise for a different perspective of the city. Alternatively, rent a kayak or paddleboard for a more active experience on the water.

Tip: Visit during sunset for a magical atmosphere, as the golden light reflects off the water, providing perfect photo opportunities.

Guadalquivir River Walk

Patagonia – the land where the earth ends – must be one of the most unique places to visit in this world. I definitely felt this way, when I visited the glaciers, mountains, and rivers around. It’s a stunning place, and even though it’s quite hard to get there, the whole trip is completely worthwhile.

Patagonian hares, hawks, red foxes, geese, black-necked swans, flamingos, woodpeckers, skunks, pumas, condors, and the near extinct huemul deer – this place is for nature lovers. We’ve spent 1 month in Patagonia, exploring the fauna and flora, zipping warm chocolate next to the chimney of our bed and breakfast, and breathing the fresh air.

Save packing lightly for another trip – visiting the snowy landscape in Southern Argentina, you want to come as prepared as possible. Scarves, gloves, a winter jacket, boots, and lots of exchange clothes are a must.

Visit a rare phenomenon

Technopolis City of Athens is a vibrant cultural complex located in the historic Gazi neighborhood, housed in a repurposed 19th-century gasworks facility. Combining industrial heritage with modern creativity, it has become one of Athens’ most dynamic venues for art, music, and innovation. With its industrial architecture and diverse events, Technopolis offers visitors a unique glimpse into Athens’ contemporary cultural scene. 
1. The Industrial Gas Museum, located within Technopolis, takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the history of Athens’ first gasworks, complete with preserved machinery and interactive exhibits. 
2. The venue hosts live concerts, exhibitions, and festivals, including the popular “Athens Jazz Festival” and various art and food fairs. 
3. The architectural charm of the site blends restored industrial structures with modern design, creating a striking backdrop for cultural events. 
4. Family-friendly spaces, such as the innovative play areas and workshops for kids, make it a great outing for visitors of all ages. 
5. The central courtyard and surrounding spaces often feature pop-up markets, food trucks, and outdoor performances, creating a lively and eclectic atmosphere.
