The itinerary spans four locations in downtown Santiago, each accessed by metro during this outing.

Upon meeting your host, Flor, at La Moneda Cultural Center you will view the current textile exposition installed at the gallery before continuing onwards to the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center. These centers serve as an introduction to traditional weaving styles still prevalent in modern Chilean and Andean cultures. Flor will then take you to her go-to yarn store, the ultra-funky Revesderecho, and explain about different fibers while sharing the historical development of store items for context. The experience concludes at the Los Dominicos Craft Village in Las Condes where Flor will facilitate conversations with artisans.

Flor has curated this experience as an opportunity to learn about Chilean textiles in a relaxed context. While visiting two cultural centers, a modern yarn store, and an artisan village, you will "unravel" the history and cultural significance of textile design and learn how techniques are woven into the fabric of modern-day Chile. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Flor has authored several books packed with vibrant pattern inspiration and projects. Her nature motifs are translated into floral crochet designs published in a British magazine and she has penned a children's story which inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in the youngest of budding designers. 

Morocco

Capture the essence of Essaouira on a photo walk led by Zack, a photographer who knows the city intimately. His quiet, observational approach helps you slow down, see clearly, and connect with the people and places around you. As you move through the medina’s alleys, you'll photograph daily life—craftspeople at work, shopkeepers in motion, light shifting across stone.

Essaouira is visually rich. For centuries, its economy centered on murex, a sea snail that produced a deep purple-blue dye. Today, that color still coats the boats, shutters, and doors that define the city’s palette. It's a natural setting for black and white photography—where contrast, texture, and light take the lead.

The walk includes a visit to Zack’s small, charming atelier, where his black and white prints hang beside books and journals that shaped his work. While the session focuses on black and white photography, Zack is happy to guide you if you prefer to shoot in color—using digital or film.

This experience is about learning to see differently. Zack guides you to focus on light, shape, and timing, rather than technicalities or gear. His black and white approach suits Essaouira, where the textures of stone, sea and shadow carry the story.

The route covers some of the city's most photogenic areas—archways, fishing docks, carved doors, and open courtyards. You'll capture scenes that reflect Essaouira’s past and present: street vendors, old facades, the pause before a gesture. Greece

This historical walk traces Thessaloniki’s development from antiquity through Byzantine and Ottoman periods, using its religious and civic architecture. You begin at Trigoniou Tower, along the northern walls, where the city’s layered geography is visible from above. Then you follow the line of Byzantine fortifications toward the Monastery of Vlatadon, traditionally linked to the presence of Saint Paul.

The route then descends into the historic city. You visit the small church of Hosios David, known for Christian mosaics, before passing the Ottoman Alatza Imaret and continuing to the Church of Saint Demetrios, Thessaloniki’s most important Byzantine monument. 

From there, the walk continues through the Roman Forum and the Rotunda, originally built as a Roman monument and later adapted for Christian worship. A short pause for coffee marks the transition from the upper city to the modern center. The walk goes past Arch of Galerius, Navarinou Square, and statue of Alexander the Great.

With over 350 vendors, the market can feel overwhelming. Your host will help you navigate, translate and connect with the artisans. Along the way, she’ll photograph you in candid portraits, using the colors and textures of the market as a vivid backdrop.

Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Hidden in the High Atlas Mountains, Telouet Kasbah is a stunning yet often-overlooked fortress that once served as the stronghold of the powerful El Glaoui family. Built in the 19th century along an ancient caravan route, this kasbah was a symbol of wealth and influence, adorned with intricate zellij tilework, carved cedar ceilings, and grand courtyards. Though partly in ruins, its lavishly decorated interior and dramatic mountain backdrop make it one of Morocco’s most fascinating historical sites.

A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the scenic but bumpy road leading to the site. Bringing a camera is essential to capture the kasbah’s detailed interiors and stunning mountain views.

I am completely fascinated by Buddhist prayer wheels. Our guide tells us that we should walk clockwise, turning the wheel and chanting, “Om Mani Padme Hum”. “Will that give me extra strength to climb up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery tomorrow?”, I ask him. “Absolutely”, he says earnestly. Well, at least one of us has faith, I think to myself.

Paro Taktsang - or Tiger’s Nest monastery - hangs off a cliff at a dizzying 10,240 feet over the Paro Valley. It’s a 5 hour climb, punctuated with lunch. Not too tough, as it turns out. I must be fitter than I think. But the guide reminds me - “See, I told you so”. 

The hike (including getting to the trailhead) takes about 6-7 hours, depending on how much time you spend at the monastery. 4 miles round trip on a wide dirt trail. At the halfway point is a cafeteria - and for most people, getting to this point is the toughest part of the hike. Beyond this, both the scenery and the difficulty of the climb are in your favor.

The Milano Duomo

The Temple of Debod is an authentic ancient Egyptian temple nestled in the heart of Madrid. This architectural marvel, dating back to the 2nd century BC, was originally constructed in Egypt but now stands as a striking monument in Madrid's Parque del Oeste. The temple was a gift from Egypt to Spain in 1968, symbolizing gratitude for Spain's assistance in saving the Abu Simbel temples during the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Top 5 Things to know:
1. The Temple of Debod was initially built by the Kushite king Adikhalamani in Nubia, close to the religious center dedicated to the goddess Isis. It was dedicated to the Egyptian god Amun and later expanded and dedicated to Isis during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
2. Throughout its history, the temple underwent several expansions and renovations. Prominent Roman emperors such as Augustus and Tiberius completed its decorations, adding to its historical and artistic significance.
3. In 1960, due to the Aswan High Dam's construction, UNESCO made an international call to save several historical monuments. As a token of gratitude for Spain's aid, Egypt gifted the Temple of Debod to Spain. It was meticulously dismantled, transported, and reconstructed in Madrid's Parque del Oeste, opening to the public in 1972.
4. The temple, surrounded by a pool of water, comprises three main reconstructed monuments. It retains its original stone-built enclosure wall, pylon gateways, and the sanctuary of Amun. The layout and decorations provide insight into ancient Egyptian religious practices and architectural styles.
5. The temple's continued exposure to the elements has been a subject of concern. In response, Madrid's city council decided in 2020 to accelerate plans to protect and preserve this unique historical monument.

Hawaii’s Big Island has a lot to offer, including the view from the Southern most point in all of the United States. Unfortunately, there is no real marker for the location. The waters are gorgeous and there is a place to jump in from a height.

For centuries, the Ponte Vecchio has captivated visitors with its unique array of jewelry shops. Meanwhile, Piazza della Signoria has remained the political heart of Florence, hosting significant events and showcasing monumental art and architecture. Things to look for:
1 - Ponte Vecchio's Timeless Appeal: This medieval stone bridge has spanned Florence's Arno River for almost 700 years. Its three shallow arches support a row of shops, creating a stunning reflection over the waters. The bridge has withstood floods, wars, and the passage of time, serving as a merchant's stage and a site of historical events, including the tragic murder of Buondelmonte de’ Buondelmonti in 1216, which fueled the feud between the Guelphs and Ghibellines​​. Today, the Ponte Vecchio is renowned for its fine jewelry stores and other offerings.

2 - Transformation Through Time: Initially, the Ponte Vecchio housed various trades, but by 1422, the Guild of Butchers monopolized the shops, turning the bridge into a market for meat, leather, and fish. This setup continued until the Medici era when Cosimo I de Medici, seeking to elevate the bridge's status, replaced the butchers with gold merchants, a tradition that endures to this day​​.

3 - A Political and Cultural Hub: Since the 14th century, Piazza della Signoria has been the focal point of Florentine political and social life. It houses the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, Neptune Fountain, and Loggia dei Lanzi, among other significant landmarks. 

4 - Symbolism and Artistry: Piazza della Signoria features several iconic sculptures, including a copy of Michelangelo's David, marking its original location. The Neptune Fountain, built to celebrate a Medici wedding, represents the family's ascent to power. 1. A well-marked trail to the summit winds through volcanic terrain, offering stunning views of Naples and the Bay of Naples as you ascend. The hike is moderately challenging but accessible to most visitors.

2. A crater viewpoint at the top provides a close-up look at the steaming vents and rugged edges of the volcano, a powerful reminder of its explosive history.

3. A 360-degree panorama from the rim stretches across the islands of Capri and Ischia, the Bay of Naples, and the surrounding countryside, making the climb well worth the effort.

Each year, over 2 million wildebeest, zebras and antelope migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of water and fresh grazing . Experiencing this during July-October is an absolute spectacle.

The Mara Triangle is particularly great for watching river crossings in August and September - perilous for the animals as the river is packed with wily Nile crocodiles.

We stay with this herd of zebras for 3 days - waiting for them to decide to cross. It’s a matter of life and death for them - so they are understandably cautious  The zebra get to the banks more than 20 times, giving up at the very last minute, often spooked by a territorial hippo or a sneaky crocodile.

Finally, a brave zebra leaps forward into the water. And a second one follows fast. Suddenly it’s mayhem with hundreds of zebras and wildebeest splashing into the river.

Ecuador

Visiting Quito, a detour should be made to the “ACTUAL Equator” museum. Only a 50 meters from where it was thought the equator passed, this used science to actually find the equator. The tour guide explains a bit about Ecuador and then shows why this is the center of the earth, with a few fun examples. The water really does flush in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere and apparently this is due to the Earth’s centripetal force.
