Chile

This sunset and stargazing experience takes place under some of the clearest night skies on Earth. After picking you up from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama, Vicente drives you to a secluded spot in the Salt Mountains, where you watch the sunset over a warming mug of vino navegado (a traditional beverage of hot Chilean red wine with orange, cinnamon, and cloves). Here, you observe how the sky changes during twilight, learn about the different stages of visibility, and understand what to expect once you reach the stargazing location.

Once at the camp, you settle into reclining chairs and are offered an assortment of local wines, cheeses, and fruits as the sky ignites above. Vicente invites you to observe nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters using his state-of-the-art smart telescope, capturing images of the night sky that will be shared with you the following day. He also takes portraits of you beneath the glowing skies before returning you to your hotel.

In this session, held at a private studio in the Fatih District, you’ll learn the core techniques that define this delicate art form.

Guided by Şeyma Çınar, a master artist with over 25 years of experience, you will gain insight into the historical significance of Tezhip before creating your own illuminated piece. This version of the workshop focuses on classical techniques, allowing you to appreciate the elegance of Tezhip in its purest form. As a self-taught photographer, David has honed his talent working with both landscapes and portraiture. He has an experimental style and a keen eye for spotting easily-missed details He has a special ability to see the potential in the simple aspects of local reality and culture, and always seeks to capture them in an original way through his photography. He works with a Canon DSLR, using 50mm and 18-55mm lenses for regular shots and a 300mm lens to capture distant subjects with clarity and depth.

David draws upon his extensive archive of travel photography experiences while mentoring those visiting Valparaíso on how to capture the beauty of a city and why you should look beyond what's at eye level.

Japan

Step inside a working Buddhist temple in Osaka and spend several hours following the rhythms of a monk’s day. You’ll meet your hosts - a practicing monk who also works as an architect, and Zane, who has spent ten years in Japan studying religious and cultural traditions. Then you’ll change into the traditional robes of a monk and begin a series of mindful rituals.

First, a guided meditation and the practice of shakyo: hand-copying sutras in the form of kanji characters using brush and ink. This is a daily ritual for monks, intended to steady the mind before service. Later, you'll assist with the daily temple tasks, from preparing for festivals to sweeping the temple grounds.

Midday, you’ll share a shojin ryori meal: a simple, seasonal vegetarian lunch prepared in the Buddhist tradition. Zane provides translation, insights and context throughout.

At the end of the day, you’ll receive either a goshuin (temple stamp) or omamori (amulet)—a small marker of your day as a monk in Osaka.

Most introductions to monastic life in Japan take place in rural retreats. This temple is an active religious site in the grid of central Osaka. You’ll speak with the monks about their lives, explore the overlaps and tensions between secular and spiritual paths, and observe how Buddhist tradition is preserved and adapted in a modern context.

The monk who leads the experience also works as an architect. His approach integrates design with ritual. His wife prepares the mid-day meal using principles of shojin ryori passed down through temple tradition. Zane, who has spent a decade in Japan, helps translate both language and context, offering interpretation that clarifies without interrupting the cadence of the day.

Your co-host is Zane, a resident of Japan for 10 years originally from New York. Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.
