This private workshop offers hands-on access to one of Spain’s oldest and most iconic ceramic workshops: the Fajalauza factory. Founded in 1517 and still operated by the Morales family, Fajalauza has been shaping the visual identity of Granada for over 500 years.

You’ll begin with a private tour through its original production site and museum—home to ancient kilns, hand-thrown molds, and decorative pieces that reflect the fusion of Islamic and European styles. As you explore, you’ll learn how Granada’s ceramic language evolved across centuries, adapting to dynasties and shifting cultural forces while staying rooted in the local soil.

Then comes your own initiation into the craft. Guided by master artisans, you’ll sit at the potter’s wheel for a “baptism of clay,” shaping a vessel from scratch. Andrea Fassi is the great-grandson of the founder of Palazzo del Freddo. A graduate in Political Science, Andrea pursued his passions for writing and travel before stepping into the family business. His global travels, where he connected with diverse cultures and gained valuable experience in the restaurant industry, have profoundly shaped his approach to gelato-making.

Andrea’s focus on intuition and artistry over rigid formulas sets him apart in the gelato world. As executive director of Palazzo del Freddo, he blends his deep love for the craft with business expertise, holding a Master’s in Food and Beverage Management from Il Sole 24 Ore.

In 2019, Andrea co-founded the Genius Writing School, hosted within the Palazzo, further cementing his commitment to creativity and cultural exchange. He passionately shares his family’s legacy while continually exploring the boundaries of gelato artistry.

Our journey begins with a taste of freshly baked goods sourced directly from small family-run stalls. Melina, a native speaker of German and Spanish and a passionate polyglot, holds a degree in Translation and Interpretation as well as a Master's in Language Teaching. She has traveled and lived in various parts of the world, including Spain, Australia, Germany, and Portugal, but the irresistible charm of Sardinia captivated her, leading her to settle on this Mediterranean island in 2015. This experience offers a full immersion in the world of washi — Japanese handmade paper — woven into Kyoto’s architecture, rituals and daily life. For over a 1000 years, this humble material has carried story, structure and spirit across generations. Kyoto has long been a center of washi artistry, supplying paper to temples, palaces and traditional arts.

You’ll begin in the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, where you’ll learn about plants that form the base of washi and how the fibers are transformed by hand. From there, Emilie will guide you to artisan studios, offering a close look at traditional techniques and the lived artistry behind them.

Later, you’ll step inside a historic noble residence, where washi-lined walls and shoji screens show how paper softens light and defines space in Japanese design. The walk ends in a curated selection of shops in Demachiyanagi offering handmade washi — a way to see the best in the craft today, and an invitation to take home a piece of enduring culture.

Washi may be everywhere in Kyoto, but without context, it’s easy to overlook. Emilie, a researcher of traditional crafts, helps you see what’s hidden in plain sight — how paper threads through rituals, interiors, and craftsmanship. Her fluency in the language, culture, and material open doors you wouldn’t even know to knock on, translating not just words but values, processes, and small gestures. A four-hour private guided experience through Kyoto with Emilie, including curated visits to washi-related sites. 

Where possible, you’ll walk between stops, as the city itself is part of the experience. Short taxi rides and any ticket or entry fees (if applicable) are covered.  

A stop for a drink and small snack is included, in a space where washi plays a role in either the interior design or presentation.

Kyoto-based artist Rachel takes you on a relaxing journey exploring the breathtaking scenery of Kyoto's Higashiyama area where at each destination, she will teach you how to capture the elegant beauty of Kyoto using Japanese watercolors.

You will stroll through neighborhoods featuring temples, shrines, parks, and rustic buildings in search of inspiration, but at a gentle pace that allows you to see authentic life in Kyoto that you might miss by trying to maximize the number of highlights you can visit in one day. In fact, Rachel lets you set the pace for the day, whether you prefer to visit more locations to do some quick sketches or just a few doing in-depth sketching.

As you explore, Rachel will explain the rich history and culture about the places you will visit, paying close attention to the details and nuances a casual visitor might overlook. During your walk, you'll have time to enjoy a snack featuring a local Kyoto specialty, and of course, a tea to go along with it.

Drawing from her experience as a long-time resident artist of Kyoto, Rachel has selected an area with a variety of sketchable locations that are completely customizable based on seasons, weather, and your skills and interests. Whether it be the majestic Gion Weeping Cherry Tree in the Spring, stone-lined streets of Nene-no-Michi in Autumn, or a snow-dusted Yasaka Pagoda in the Winter, Rachel’s helpful instructions will have you creating a unique watercolor keepsake of your memories of Kyoto. She’ll also provide a bit of history and cultural context of the places you visit that will enrich your Kyoto experience.

Rachel believes the analog process of sketching during travel helps people connect better with their destination and teaches them to observe details more closely. Watercolor Memories of Kyoto

Price includes professional artist instruction as well as all supplies, including an ultra-compact watercolor sketchbook kit (paints, water brush, and sketchbook) that’s yours to keep, featuring high-quality Japanese watercolors and paper. 

All necessary art supplies are included, but please come dressed comfortably for a morning walking around outdoors, including seasonally appropriate clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and a compact umbrella. Although you will have a short snack and beverage break, a water bottle might also be nice to bring along in case you get thirsty.

You will meet Rachel at the South Gate of Yasaka Shrine, where we'll be within 5-10 minutes walk of various locations with many sketch options.

Rachel is an artist and instructor based in Kyoto, Japan. Combining her formal Western art training with her ongoing studies of Eastern art traditions (such as sumi-e ink painting), her work is focused on expressively capturing the scenery of Kyoto en plein air.

Her watercolor paintings of Kyoto have been featured in the Kyoto Journal and her sumi-e paintings displayed in the Nippon Suibokuga Art Association's annual shows.

An experienced educator, she has offered on-site sketching and painting classes in Kyoto for over 7 years, working with a full range of ages and experience levels. Her instruction style is personalized and supportive, aimed at giving participants both the practical skills and confidence to continue creating art of their own.

Her philosophy is that by taking time to sketch and paint, whether while traveling or in daily life, one can forge a special relationship with one's surroundings and make unforgettable memories.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts) nestled in the historic Plaza del Museo, is Andalusia's crown jewel and Spain's second most prestigious art museum after Madrid's Prado. Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is home to the Bosques de Palermo, the city’s largest and most beautiful green space, often compared to Central Park in New York or El Retiro in Madrid. Officially known as Parque Tres de Febrero, this urban oasis covers over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) and features serene lakes, lush gardens, and tree-lined walking paths, making it a favorite spot for locals and visitors to relax, exercise, and enjoy nature.


1. Rosedal (Rose Garden) – A stunning rose garden with over 18,000 roses, charming white bridges, and elegant statues, offering picture-perfect scenery.

2. Lago de Regatas (Boating Lake) – Visitors can rent paddle boats or rowboats to explore the peaceful waters while admiring the city skyline.

3. Jardín Japonés (Japanese Garden) – One of the largest Japanese gardens outside Japan, featuring koi ponds, red bridges, and tea houses for a tranquil escape.

4. El Planetario Galileo Galilei – A futuristic dome-shaped planetarium, offering interactive astronomy exhibits and stunning night sky projections.

Bosques de Palermo

What does the southern end of the world look like? After five and a half l-o-n-g hours from Punta Arenas, out of the blue appears Hotel Explora Salto Chico - and it’s breathtaking. With a stunning, modern countenance, views-to-die-for of Torres del Paine (the Towers) and Cuernos del Paine (the Horns), and the sound of the Salto Chico waterfall as we linger over amazing food and excellent Chilean wine.

The Explora guides ensure they get us out of bed. My favorite experience - a day-long hike to Grey glacier. And when we get really close, our guides hop into a little boat to fetch thousand-year-old ice from the glacier for little drinks of Pisco Sour! 

Patagonia’s Parc Nacional Torres del Paine has picture postcard views everywhere. If you are a keen hiker, try the Circuit or the W. I stick to day hikes as a rule - if you are like me, try Grey Glacier, French Valley Glacier or Base of the Paine Towers.

Going to Extremes

Pula, Croatia, is home to the Pula Arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. Built in the 1st century AD under Emperor Vespasian, this impressive limestone structure once hosted gladiator battles and could accommodate up to 23,000 spectators. Today, it remains a stunning testament to Roman engineering and serves as a unique venue for concerts, film festivals, and historical reenactments. With its majestic arches, underground tunnels, and breathtaking coastal backdrop, the Pula Arena is a must-visit landmark for history lovers and photographers alike.

1. Walking through the grand stone arches, visitors can admire the arena’s remarkably  ell-preserved structure, which still retains its original seating and towering outer walls.

2. The underground chambers, once used by gladiators and wild animals before battles, now house an informative museum displaying ancient artifacts and the history of Roman amphitheaters.

3. Every summer, the Pula Film Festival transforms the arena into a spectacular open-air cinema, offering a one-of-a-kind experience of watching films under the stars in an ancient Roman setting.

4. Throughout the year, live concerts and reenactments of gladiator fights bring the amphitheater to life, allowing visitors to experience its historical grandeur in an interactive way.

5. Perched near the Adriatic Sea, the arena offers stunning views of Pula’s coastline, making it an excellent spot for photography, especially at sunset when the stone walls glow in golden hues.

Greece

The Varvakios Central Market in Athens is a sensory feast and a bustling hub of local life. Located in the heart of the city, this vibrant marketplace is the place to explore the culinary traditions of Greece. Known for its lively atmosphere, Varvakios offers fresh produce, seafood, meats, and spices, making it a paradise for foodies and curious travelers eager to experience authentic Athenian culture. 
1. The seafood and meat halls are the market’s centerpiece, offering a wide variety of fresh catches and quality cuts displayed with the flair of a true marketplace spectacle. 
2. The fresh produce stalls are brimming with colorful fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices, showcasing the flavors of the Mediterranean. 
3. Traditional Greek delicacies and pantry items like olives, cheeses, honey, and dried herbs make this an ideal spot to shop for souvenirs or ingredients. 
4. The market is surrounded by small eateries and tavernas, where visitors can sample authentic dishes like souvlaki, grilled fish, or hearty stews. 
5. The lively atmosphere is enriched by the sounds, sights, and interactions with local vendors, who often engage in lively banter with customers. 
Visitor Tip: Allocate 1–2 hours for a visit, and come in the morning to experience the market at its liveliest. Bring cash, as many vendors don’t accept cards, and wear comfortable shoes for navigating the bustling halls.

Visit the icon Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park. Eat great Chicago classics like Portillos hotdogs and Lou’s pizza. Enjoy views from the Willis tower or spend a day on Navy Pier!

Wander the city

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Aljezur Castle offers a unique window into the past and panoramic views that stretch over Aljezur and its pristine coastline. This ancient fortress, believed to originate from the Iron and Bronze Ages, stands as a testament to various epochs, including the Visigothic, Roman, and Moorish periods, culminating in its Christian fortification in the 13th century. Top reasons to visit include its historical depth, architectural remnants, and the breathtaking vistas it offers.
1. Begin your exploration at the heart of Aljezur's history. The castle's ruins whisper tales of Moorish legacy and Christian conquests, inviting visitors to step back into a time where knights and sieges were the orders of the day.
2. No visit is complete without seeing the Moorish walls and towers that have withstood the tests of time. These ancient structures not only offer insights into medieval military architecture but also frame the stunning landscape of the Algarve.
3. The castle's summit reveals a breathtaking panorama, where the beauty of the Aljezur plain and the distant Monchique highlands unfold before your eyes. It's a perfect moment of wonder and a must-capture for photography enthusiasts.
4. Amidst the ruins lies a well-preserved cistern, a crucial water source during sieges, serving as a stark reminder of the castle's strategic importance in ancient times. This feature symbolizes the ingenuity and resilience of its former inhabitants.
5. Events and stories, such as the legend of a Muslim maiden's love for a Christian knight, enrich the visit with romance and mystery.
 For the most enjoyable experience, visit during the cooler hours of early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Remember, the journey to the castle is part of the adventure, with its location atop a hill offering not only strategic views but also a rewarding challenge for those who make the ascent.

Chania’s Old Venetian Harbor is a captivating blend of history and culture, featuring narrow, cobblestone streets lined with Venetian and Ottoman architecture. This picturesque harbor, with its iconic lighthouse and colorful waterfront buildings, is a must-visit for travelers exploring Crete.
1. The harbor’s Venetian lighthouse, built in the 16th century, is a landmark offering stunning photo opportunities.
2. The area is rich with Venetian and Ottoman influences, seen in its architecture and historic landmarks.
3. Narrow alleyways are filled with charming cafes, shops, and art galleries.
4. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants with beautiful views.

Istria, Croatia, is home to the breathtaking Brijuni National Park, an archipelago of 14 pristine islands known for their unspoiled nature, rich history, and fascinating wildlife. Once a private retreat for Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito, Brijuni is now a protected paradise where visitors can explore lush Mediterranean landscapes, ancient ruins, and diverse ecosystems. With its turquoise waters, archaeological sites, and safari park, Brijuni National Park offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

1. On Veliki Brijun, the largest island, visitors can explore Roman villas, Byzantine fortresses, and a 13th-century church, revealing the island’s long and storied history.

2. A unique safari park is home to exotic animals such as zebras, elephants, and llamas, originally gifted to Tito by world leaders, alongside native species like deer and peacocks roaming freely.

3. Along the coastline, crystal-clear waters and hidden coves make Brijuni a fantastic spot for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing by the Adriatic Sea.

4. The dinosaur footprints imprinted in the island’s limestone date back over 100 million years, offering a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric times.
