In a 3.5-hour tour in Alfama and Mouraria — two of Lisbon’s oldest areas, among the few spared by the 1755 quake — you walk through the urban layers of the city’s origins before Portugal existed as a kingdom. You start at the Roman Theatre, viewing the ruins at street level. Then you move through cobbled streets, hills, alleys, courtyards — shaped by medieval and pre-medieval planning — to experience the city’s history.

You see how Phoenician traces fade into Roman foundations, then Visigoths, Muslim urbanism, Jewish quarters, and Christian rule. Mouraria was named for the Moors and holds the memory of coexistence and marginalization. You climb to viewpoints, slip around key structures, and pause for coffee and pastry. The walk ends near Santo Domingos Square, where the medieval tangle of Alfama and Mouraria meets the rational grid of Baixa’s post-quake planning. Then, ascend to Cerro Concepción aboard a 100-year-old funicular to witness the improbable geometry of a city built on 42 hills. Growing up amid the windswept dunes of Concón and the bohemian streets of Valparaíso kindled David's appreciation for photography, nature, and art. He graduated from the University of Playa Ancha and went on to work as a Software Engineer, while flexing his skills behind the lens.

He works with a Canon DSLR, using 50mm and 18-55mm lenses for regular shots and a 300mm lens to capture distant subjects with clarity and depth.

Mexico

You begin the day with pickup from your accommodation in San Miguel de Allende and travel through the scenic highland countryside – with a stop at a historic hacienda - before arriving in Guanajuato, which is shaped as much by geology as by history. Once a major silver-mining center of New Spain, it developed vertically — its narrow streets, stairways, and underground tunnels responding to steep terrain and seasonal rivers.

Accompanied by local guide Cesar Nistal Gonzalez, you explore the city through plazas, alleyways, and former river tunnels that now function as roadways. Cesar explains how mining wealth, colonial power, and later independence movements shaped the city’s physical form.

You visit Diego Rivera Museum, located in the artist’s birthplace, and trace connections between Guanajuato’s working-class history and Rivera’s political and artistic outlook. The pace is unhurried, allowing time for questions, observation, and context, before returning to San Miguel de Allende.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Guanajuato developed as a silver-mining center constrained by steep terrain and seasonal flooding, and much of the city’s infrastructure exists below street level. The route deliberately moves between surface streets and the tunnel system — originally engineered to control the Río Guanajuato — so you understand how geology, mining wealth, and engineering shaped everyday life through the city.

Cesar connects national history to specific sites, including the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, where early fighting in the 1810 independence movement unfolded, and the Diego Rivera Museum, where Rivera’s early environment helps explain the political and social focus of his later work. Mount Srđ

Paisagem Protegida Local da Fonte da Benémola and Rocha da Pena are two of Portugal’s hidden natural treasures in the Algarve region. Both areas offer an escape into the countryside, ideal for walks through diverse ecosystems and picturesque trails that showcase a different side of the Algarve’s beauty beyond its famous beaches.

1. Fonte da Benémola is a lush, river-fed landscape where springs and wetlands create a cool, green oasis. Along the gentle paths, you’ll see a unique mix of vegetation like oleanders and tamarisks, and may even spot wildlife such as turtles, kingfishers, and otters. The relatively flat trail makes it a family-friendly spot to experience the Algarve’s natural wonders.

2. Rocha da Pena, known for its impressive limestone cliffs, provides a more challenging hike with breathtaking panoramic views. The trail ascends to a plateau at about 480 meters, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping vistas over the Algarve countryside. Rocha da Pena also holds historical significance, with ancient fortifications and caves that were once inhabited by prehistoric people.

3. Both areas support a rich variety of plant and animal life. From Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme to rare orchids, these landscapes are a haven for biodiversity. Birdwatchers, in particular, can enjoy spotting species like eagles and falcons soaring high above.

4. Informational signs and well-marked trails in both locations enhance the experience by highlighting the natural and cultural importance of these landscapes.

5. These peaceful areas also make perfect picnic spots. Shaded areas near the Fonte da Benémola springs or the Rocha da Pena plateau provide scenic and serene locations to relax with a meal.

Both areas are accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer especially pleasant weather.

Algarve’s Picturesque Trails

The Vasari Corridor, an elevated kilometer-long passageway, is a symbol of the Medici family's influence in Renaissance Florence. Commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici in 1565, this corridor connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace, offering a unique journey through Florence's history, art, and architecture. Top 5 reasons to take this stroll:
1 - Designed by Giorgio Vasari, the corridor was constructed to allow the Medici family to move freely and safely between their residence in Palazzo Pitti and the government headquarters in Palazzo Vecchio. This architectural marvel, completed in just five months, includes small windows overlooking the streets and the Arno River. 

2 - As you walk through the corridor, you are surrounded by an exquisite collection of artwork, mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a unique collection of artists' self-portraits. This collection, one of the most complete in Europe, was started by Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici in the 17th century. 

3 - The corridor has witnessed both tragic and triumphant moments in Florence's history. In 1993, a section of the corridor was heavily damaged by a terrorist attack commissioned by the Italian mafia, destroying several artworks. These damaged paintings have been pieced back together and displayed as a reminder of this dark chapter in the city's history​​.

4 - The section over Ponte Vecchio offers breathtaking views of the Arno River and the city. In 1939, Benito Mussolini ordered the enlargement of the corridor's windows for Adolf Hitler's visit, allowing an even more impressive vista. This panoramic view was reportedly so admired by Hitler that he ordered Ponte Vecchio to be spared from bombing during World War II​​.

5 - The corridor concludes with a view of the Church of Santa Felicita, where the Medici attended Holy Mass from a privileged vantage point.

The Caves in Negril offers a unique and exhilarating experience for those seeking adventure in a breathtakingly beautiful setting. Perched atop honeycomb cliffs formed by volcanic activity, The Caves is a gateway to thrilling cliff diving and cave swimming experiences.

The natural structure of the cliffs at The Caves makes them an ideal location for cliff diving. The walls of the resort are a veritable museum of ancient fossilized marine life and provide a variety of diving spots. 

As guests at The Caves, we were encouraged to take early morning dives from the cliffs, with jumps ranging from 8 ft to 30 ft, and there's even a jump inside a cave for the more daring. 

Despite the excitement of cliff diving, it's important to approach this activity with caution. The heights can be intimidating, and the water can appear menacing, especially when the weather is not ideal. So be careful and always go with a companion.

Visiting Western Australia's Nambung National Park and the Pinnacles Desert is a must.

Located at the southern gateway to Australia's Coral Coast, along the Indian Ocean Drive, the Pinnacles Desert of Nambung National Park is one of the major natural attractions in the region and are Western Australia's most visited attractions.

The park is located roughly 200km, or 2 hours' drive north of Perth, and covers an area of 17,487 hectares providing natural habitat for an extensive array of native animals and bird life.

The Pinnacles are amazing natural limestone structures, formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago after the sea receded and left deposits of sea shells. Over time, coastal winds removed the surrounding sand, leaving the pillars exposed to the elements. The Pinnacles range in height and dimension - some stand as high as 3.5m!

Argentina

The largest (not highest) waterfalls in the world are located in Puerto Iguazu, Argentina. It's a breathtaking spectacle to hear, see and feel the masses of water cascading down the landscape, and along the way, you'll see beautiful rainbows, coatis, and birds.
To get there, you'll fly to Puerto Iguazú and stay at one of the local hostels. We took this colorful train to the falls, and then you hike a bit on very accessible trails. Take your camera, because you'll want to show these views to your friends and family back home. Later in the evening you can watch the sunset and have a nice view of the three-country border – a river that separates Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil.
After visiting the Argentine side of the falls, you can take a trip to Brazil to experience the other side of the falls as well. On the Brazilian side, you can also visit a local botanical garden where you can observe mockingbirds, butterflies, monkeys, and other tropical animals.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

San Spiridione Church is a testament to the city's multiculturalism. This magnificent Serbian Orthodox church, dedicated to Saint Spyridon, a Greek Cypriot saint, showcases a splendid Byzantine style that dates back to 1869, reflecting the city's unique position at the crossroads of Europe's major ethnic and religious communities. Top highlights:
1 - The church's striking appearance, with its multi-domed structure, captures the essence of Byzantine architecture. Constructed from pearly white Istrian stone, the large central dome is flanked by four hemispherical cupolas. The front façade is adorned with nine statues by Milanese artist Emilio Bisi, each contributing to the church's grandeur and artistic significance.
2 - The interior of San Spiridione is a realm of tranquility and beauty. The iconostasis, adorned with mid-nineteenth-century icons painted in Moscow and later covered in pure silver and gold plate, signifies the church's historical and spiritual depth. 
3 - Highlights include a votive vigil lamp gifted by Paul I of Russia, a stunning crucifixion at the altar, and a shroud made in 1772 in gold embroidery on silk velvet canvas.
