What is this?
Discover Versailles through the life of Marie Antoinette, who ruled from the Palace of Versailles for two decisive decades before the Revolution. Guided by Adeline, a licensed guide and historian specialized in the eighteenth century, you begin at the Palace of Versailles, reading its grand spaces through the Queen’s daily routines, social codes, and expectations placed upon her.
From there, the focus shifts away from the spectacle of the Palace toward the Petit Trianon and the Hamlet — places of refinement and retreat where Marie Antoinette sought intimacy, autonomy, and a degree of control within an unforgiving court system.
Walking through these settings, you explore the tension between ceremony and seclusion, reputation and reality. The flow of the day connects architecture, personal choice, and political consequence, offering a portrait of a Queen whose pleasures, scandals, and private decisions became inseparable from the tensions of late eighteenth-century French court life.
What makes this unique?
This experience focuses on how Marie Antoinette, crowned in 1774 at nineteen, lived, chose, and withdrew within Versailles itself. You follow the Queen between public power and private desire, tracing a life marked by pleasure, scandal, and an extravagant lifestyle that shaped both her legend and her fate. Adeline’s expertise as a historian of the eighteenth century gives depth and structure to this approach.
Beyond the personal fate of Marie Antoinette, the experience situates her within the glamorous world of aristocratic life and the inequalities of the Ancien Régime. Court leisure and excess are considered alongside privilege and social imbalance.
What makes this experience distinctive is its focus on ambiguity rather than myth. Marie Antoinette appears neither as icon nor caricature, but as a figure shaped by expectation and contradiction. Her desire for freedom, intimacy, and space becomes a lens through which to understand Versailles and its society.
What is the profile of the host?
Adeline Verspieren is a licensed guide based in Paris. She was born and grew up in the Upper Marais, a creative, trendy, and historic district of the city, and now lives near Parc Monceau, where she chose to raise her three children.
She holds a master’s degree in 18th-century French history from the Sorbonne, focusing her studies on the Grand Tour, an aristocratic rite of passage. She has worked in tourism since 2010, guiding travelers from around the world through Paris.
