The experience starts in Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage city shaped by more than two millennia of history. Founded as a Roman colony in 46 BC and developed under Augustus, it preserves remarkable Roman monuments such as the Amphitheatre and the Théâtre Antique. Walking through the old town, you pass the Hôtel de Ville, Place du Forum, and views of the Rhône. The city also carries a deep connection with Vincent van Gogh.

After lunch in Arles, you continue south into the Camargue, following the Rhône toward the Mediterranean. At the Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau, you walk through wetlands that host many bird species, including the region’s pink flamingos, within a landscape shaped by natural dynamics as well as ongoing human activity.

The route then leads to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a small coastal town where narrow streets and the seafront open onto a place closely tied to Romani communities, who gather here each year for a major pilgrimage.

The experience takes you from Arles to one of Europe’s rare inhabited and productive delta landscapes, where rice farming, salt production, and the breeding of Camargue bulls and horses are still active parts of the territory. Venice’s history is inseparable from its bond with the water that surrounds it. This experience begins where the lagoon meets the entrance of the Grand Canal, reading the skyline of San Giorgio and Punta della Dogana as a way into the city’s past.

The navigation continues around Punta della Dogana and the Basilica della Salute, following lines that reveal stories of commerce, devotion and resilience. From here the route moves toward islands that marked important moments in the life of the Republic. San Lazzaro highlights its Armenian heritage, while Lazzaretto Nuovo, once part of the city’s quarantine system, recalls the measures that protected the Republic.

The passage through the Arsenale opens a view of Venice as a maritime power, with basins and gateways that still convey its scale. The loop around San Michele, Venice’s cemetery island, brings a different register, with its walls and cypress trees marking the city’s relationship with memory before returning toward San Marco.

Guided by a master artist, you’ll first delve into the historical, cultural and spiritual depth behind Ebru’s fluid designs, then experience a live demonstration of foundational techniques. You'll learn how to hold the brush, apply vibrant natural pigments, and guide the floating colors into intricate shapes like "battal" (stone pattern) or "nightingale's nest." As the pigments dance on water, you’ll gain insight into the meanings woven into each pattern. With hands-on guidance, you’ll create two marbled paper designs to take home—a lasting piece of Turkish art and culture, made by you.

What makes this experience truly special is the host Nesime, a master artist who has been practicing Ebru for over a decade. You’ll be welcomed into her private gallery. She will guide you through the technical foundations—holding special brushes, applying pigments, using the “tekne” (water tray), and shaping intricate patterns—explaining the symbolism of each design. You’ll learn how Ebru uses natural pigments that float on a thickened liquid, allowing for a unique interplay of color and texture. Argentina

This four-hour walking tour unravels the political history of Buenos Aires. Taking place in Recoleta and Retiro, Silvina's route passes the city's most elegant boulevards, encountering majestic palaces once frequented by the high society of Buenos Aires. Silvina spotlights the architects behind each building and share the secrets of the people who resided within, as well as those honored in statues and other monuments. You'll tilt your neck at what was once the tallest skyscraper in Latin America and learn how revolution and wars shaped the city we see today.

With a sharp eye for detail, Silvina draws your attention to hidden architectural elements and reveals the significance behind them. She details the rise of Peronism under Juan Domingo Perón and Eva "Evita" Perón, as well as the Anti-Peronism movement. The outing concludes at Recoleta Cemetery, circuiting notable graves including the resting place of Evita. A mid-experience coffee stop provides a moment of contemplation.

The Nada Gogo area of Kobe City holds special significance in the sake brewing world. Sake brewing began here nearly 700 years ago, predating the commercial production of sake by three centuries. With its refined knowledge of sake production, Nada Gogo eventually provided 80% of the commercial sake consumed in the old capital of Edo, now Tokyo.

You’ll begin your tour with an elegant lunch in a preserved traditional house before visiting three of Nada Gogo’s outstanding breweries to learn how to appreciate the taste of sake. Peru

Have you ever wondered about the daily life of an archaeologist and what they do behind the scenes? This workshop lifts the lid on the care that goes into the preservation of archaeological finds. And doing so in Cusco places you within one of the most archaeologically layered regions of the Andes.

Hosted by local archaeologist Delsi and her sister, Yessika, you gather at a workstation around an assortment of artifacts sourced from the valleys around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You learn about the pre-Colombian cultures of the region and how archaeologists use identifiers to place ceramic relics into historical contexts. Delsi then guides you through identifying ceramic types and approximating the age of vessels using simple metrics. You learn about excavation techniques in the region and how finds are cleaned, identified, and registered.

After lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum, where the knowledge gained earlier provides a new lens for reading the objects on display.

This archaeologist-led workshop offers rare access beyond the display case, allowing you to discover ancient pottery techniques used in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You'll hold centuries-old fragments in your palm and use a microscope to identify materials used by pre-Colombian cultures in the manufacture of pottery. This may lead to a discussion of how pigments were produced for decoration and how vessels were used. From even a small fragment of pottery, you learn how archaeologists determine which part of a vessel it came from, estimate its size, and infer its function using systematic methods. In some cases, there is time to reassemble fragments, revealing how broken pieces come back into form through careful analysis.

After a local lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum with Delsi, applying what you’ve learned to objects on display. This museum visit, with an archaeologist at your side, allows for deeper engagement with Cusco’s archaeological heritage.

Irish-born Daniel O’Shea and Peruvian-born Delsi Espinoza are the co-founders of an archaeology venture that contributes to preserving the cultural heritage of Cusco and Sacred Valley. The couple have teamed up on archaeological projects across Cusco's Southern and Sacred Valleys. They run conservation, artifact registry, and site mapping projects — primarily designed for volunteers and students. Daniel and Delsi’s Fernwayer experiences are uniquely curated for curious explorers seeking to step into the shoes of an archaeologist for a day.

Delsi, a fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco, hosts this experience alongside her sister, Yessika. Since graduating from the Universidad San Antonio Abad Cusco in 2014, Delsi has led regional excavation projects, maintenance programs, and educational initiatives. She has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks parks including Machu Picchu. 

Scattered across Rome’s buildings, small street shrines known as Madonnelle depict the Madonna in modest frames of marble, terracotta, mosaic, oil or fresco. Once numbering in the thousands, around 500 remain today. Many include handcrafted frames or painted details—subtle traces of the artisans and caretakers who shaped the city’s spiritual landscape.

Their origins trace back to ancient Rome’s Lares Compitales—guardian spirits of crossroads—later transformed through Marian devotion into symbols of everyday faith. For centuries, locals kept them lit with candles or lanterns, maintaining them as acts of care and protection. Before modern streetlights, they lit the city’s darker corners, blending function and belief.

These shrines are more than historical detail. They are silent witnesses to Rome’s evolution—markers of intimate devotion, persistence, and community. Embedded in walls and corners, they reflect how faith and daily life remain quietly intertwined in the fabric of the city.

This walk invites you to engage with a centuries-old tradition still alive in the streets of Rome. The Charming Soul of Lisbon

5 days in Lisbon with palaces, tiles, fado, markets and a day trip to the mountains and villages.

Santa Maria del Mar, known as the "Cathedral of La Ribera" in Barcelona, is a sterling example of pure Catalan Gothic architecture, distinguished by its harmonious proportions and serene ambiance. Completed rapidly for a medieval church, between 1329 and 1384, it maintains a stylistic purity rare for the era due to its construction within just 55 years. The church's interior, marked by its vast, open spaces and the widest column spacing of any Gothic church in Europe, creates an impression of sublime width, height, and airiness​​​​. It’s our favorite church in Barcelona, here’s why:
1: The church's interior is notably sparse in imagery, a result of damage from a fire in 1936 during anticlerical disturbances. Despite this loss, including the destruction of the Baroque retable by Deodat Casanoves and Salvador Gurri, some stained-glass windows from various periods have survived, contributing to the church's luminous atmosphere​​.
2: The basilica's design boasts very tall slender columns that are 13 meters apart, supporting three naves of equal height. This unique structural approach contributes to the church's feeling of spaciousness, with its maximum height matching its total width at 100 medieval feet​​​​.
3: Rooftop Terrace Tour: Available from May to October, the tour offers insights into the church's construction, history, and the surrounding La Ribera neighborhood. 
4: Santa Maria del Mar is a beacon of Barcelona's rich maritime and mercantile history. Its pure Catalan Gothic style, and the communal effort symbolized by the 'bastaixos' carved on its doors, speak to a deep connection between the city's people and this venerable basilica. 
The church is located in La Ribera and welcomes visitors daily, with cultural visits and guided tours available in multiple languages.

Santa Maria del Mar

Staying at the Inn at Death Valley, we thought we would be able to get up just before sunrise and make a dash over to Zabriskie Point. In hind sight, we should have woken up a good 60 minutes earlier, since the viewpoint was packed with people as we got there. 


The stunning views of the badlands slowly fill up with yellow, orange, purple and brown colors - and every hue in between - as the sun comes up, totally makes up for the early rise. Once the sun has finished painting the badlands, it reaches out to color in the Panamint Range across the valley with gorgeous pinks and purples. If you want to avoid the crowds, do the 2.5 mile Badlands Loop hike. Right after the walk, you can drive the short 3 mile Twenty Mule Team Canyon loop drive before returning to Stovepipe Wells for breakfast. 

We had been told that the Death Valley National Park is all about extremes - and the Zabriskie Point is a visual representation of that.

Painting with Light

Miramare Castle, overlooking the Adriatic Sea near Trieste, is a stunning embodiment of 19th-century eclecticism. Built as the residence of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria and his wife Charlotte, this castle blends Gothic, Medieval, and Renaissance elements, offering visitors a glimpse into a royal past. Reasons to visit:
1 - The castle, designed by Austrian engineer Carl Junker, stands as a testament to the eclectic style of its era. It features more than 20 rooms including Maximilian’s bedroom, designed like a ship’s cabin, and the grand Throne Room. Visitors can follow a pre-established itinerary to explore these rooms, adorned with original furnishings, artworks, and decorative objects from the mid-19th century.
2 - Miramare Castle has witnessed significant historical moments, including the tragic story of its original inhabitants. Archduke Maximilian lived in the castle for only a few years before moving to Mexico, where he was appointed emperor and later met a tragic fate. The castle’s interiors reflect the life and tastes of this period, with poignant artworks like "The Last Moments of Maximilian" adding depth to the visit.
3 - The castle is surrounded by Miramare Park, a 22-hectare area featuring a mix of Northern and Mediterranean botanical elements. This English-style garden, conceived by Maximilian himself, is a harmonious blend of forest-trees, bushes, ponds, and sculptures, offering a serene escape and a contrast to the Baroque garden tradition.
4 - Inside the castle, visitors can marvel at an array of art and cultural treasures. From paintings and sculptures collected by Maximilian during his travels to the marine life museum housed in the restored stables, Miramare Castle is a trove of artistic and historical significance.
Visitors can explore on their own or opt for guided tours or audio guides. The park, with its diverse flora and tranquil ponds, is freely accessible, offering a perfect setting for leisurely walks.

Disko Bay is the Iceberg Factory for 10% of Greenland's icebergs. Sadly, production has increased in recent years, with Spring melts as early as April.

Nothing prepares you for the disorientation - and wonderment - of the brilliance of a midnight Sun. Especially when surrounded by massive icebergs that reflect and mirror the sky and the sea.

I don't remember seeing this yesterday, I tell the boat captain, is this a new work of art? He laughs, and tells me that everyday is  a bit different. 

The midnight boat trip in end-July - as the sun sets just for a few minutes - is the best time to see the sky’s amazing colors reflected on the icebergs.

Iceberg Factory
