Much more than a flea market, professional dealers tastefully set out chandeliers, linens, paintings, furniture and fragments of domestic history along canal-side streets. The town dates to the 12th century, when fishermen built huts on stilts above marshland. By the 18th century, canals lined with giant water wheels powered silk factories and paper mills.

“But in the Kalahari, it's always Tuesday, or Thursday if you like. Or Sunday. No clocks or calendars tell you to do this or that.” - The Gods Must be Crazy

Walking with the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen of the Makgadikgadi Plains in the Central Kalahari, quintessential hunter-gatherers, I learned several things that I hope never to have to use - how to pronounce first names that are laden with clicks, collect plants for medicinal recipes, dig for scorpions, and make a fire with twigs and leaves.

Makgadikgadi means 'dry, dry', but the bush men and women know how to live in harmony with the land. Family and cultural ties are strong.

Thanks to Jack’s Camp for organizing this visit, they have longstanding connections with the local people.

Walking with Zu/’hoasi

Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, is home to the Alcázar of Jerez, a stunning Moorish fortress that stands as a testament to the city’s rich Islamic and Christian heritage. Originally built in the 11th century by the Almohads, this well-preserved fortress features imposing defensive walls, serene courtyards, and intricate Islamic architecture. Later expanded by the Christian rulers, the Alcázar seamlessly blends Moorish, Gothic, and Baroque influences, making it one of Jerez’s most fascinating historical landmarks.

Hawaii’s Big Island has a lot to offer, including the view from the Southern most point in all of the United States. Unfortunately, there is no real marker for the location. The waters are gorgeous and there is a place to jump in from a height.
