Bruno Berthier is a painter with a background in sociology and experience in diplomacy. His work is characterised by thick brushstrokes and a bold use of colour. Coming from a family of painters of Italian origin, he grew up in Mexico City’s Coyoacán neighborhood and is passionate about Mexican and international contemporary art. He has a passion for travelling and spent many years couchsurfing and meeting people across Europe and Asia. He is a member of the Quinto Piso Collective, composed of numerous contemporary artists working in CDMX. This collective works to support each other and promote Mexico City’s exciting contemporary art scene. 

This half-day private mosaic experience takes place in the studio of the bilingual muralist, Shannon McEvoy. Under Shannon's guidance, you will design and fabricate your own mosaic masterpiece to take home as a memento of your time in Chile.  From the Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert, to the colorful hills of Valparaiso, to the Villarrica Volcano in Pucon, to the rock formations of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile is filled with breathtaking landscapes that are gorgeous to mosaic.

Shannon will work with you to help you bring your vision to fruition. After the activity concludes, Shannon will grout your mosaic tile and help you to arrange the pick-up from her studio 48+ hours later. During the workshop, you'll hear of the significance of mosaics in Chile—a country famed for its street art and murals. You'll hear about Shannon's role as a mosaic muralist working in Santiago, Puente Alto (the Mosaic Capital of the Southern Hemisphere), and beyond.

This experience invites you into the intimate studio of an artist in Santiago to create your own Chile-inspired mosaic artwork. This may be of an abstract style or inspired by Chilean landscapes. You may choose to collaborate with your travel partner and create one mosaic to take home, or create individual masterpieces.

Over the course of the workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of mosaic techniques as Shannon helps you assemble your artwork. As an artistic director, Shannon collaborates with Chilean muralists and champions the community aspect of creation—she believes that art is for everyone. During this activity, you'll have the opportunity to quiz Shannon about life as a bilingual expat artist in Chile, her current projects, and how you can bring more creativity into your life. This bilingual mosaic masterclass is the perfect opportunity to practice your Spanish and pick up some essential "Chilenismos" (Chilean slang) for your onward travels.

This experience takes place in Shannon's studio in Providencia, Santiago de Chile. The exact address to is provided after booking. If traveling by metro, take Line 1 and alight at either Pedro de Valdivia or Manuel Montt. It's a 15-minute walk to Shannon’s studio from either station. Shannon is a multimedia artist who loves exploring different languages and cultures, meeting new people, and listening to their stories. Originally from Minnesota, she studied abroad in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. The street art of Valparaíso influenced her so profoundly that she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and pursued a career as a muralist.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—but her talents don’t stop there. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography.

Shannon loves sharing her passions for art and language. To her, both are about expressing oneself and building meaningful connections. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she also speaks basic Portuguese.

Polanco is known for its cultural institutions, embassies, and upscale hotels — but also for its long-standing culinary reputation. Since its founding by Mexico’s Spanish elite, the neighborhood has become a national byword for elegance and luxury. In the 1940s, it attracted Mexico’s first haute cuisine restaurants — and now, street food and fine dining live side by side.

Affectionately known as Polanquito, it holds some of the city’s most beloved food traditions. On this walking tour, you’ll explore iconic spots serving classics like tacos de cochinita pibil from Yucatán-style stalls, rich duck tacos inspired by Puebla, and a torta de chile relleno — a dish somewhere between a stuffed pepper and a Mexican omelet.

Grand Bazaar Behind-the-Scenes

Enter the Spice Bazaar, still thick with scent and sound since 1660. Walk beneath its vaulted ceilings lined with saffron, sumac, and dried hibiscus sold by families who've worked the same stalls for generations. Climb toward one of Istanbul’s architectural high points—Süleymaniye Mosque, designed by imperial architect Mimar Sinan in the 16th century. This was once a civic hub. Visit the former caravanserai, the soup kitchen (imaret) that fed the poor, and the medical clinic (darüşşifa) that served travelers and locals alike. As you move through the complex, you’ll see how Ottoman ideals of charity, urban planning, and commerce were woven together. Pause in the courtyard to take in panoramic views of the Golden Horn, then, if time allows, sit for helva and tea at a nearby terrace café still frequented by porters and theology students.

Süleymaniye is a beautiful site. The route will stay in the courtyard and grounds and the include the incredible views. Your guide will explain how this is also a working model of Ottoman urban design. This part of the tour reveals how empire-era Istanbul was structured to serve body, soul, and society through tightly interlinked institutions. You’ll see how infrastructure shaped public life. And you’ll appreciate how Istanbul’s waterways shaped its character — from commerce to culture — and enjoy a stunning panorama of Sinan’s masterpiece mosque, dating to 1550‑57.

Masaccio's 'Expulsion from the Garden of Eden' and 'The Tribute Money' are particularly notable for their use of perspective and chiaroscuro, techniques that added a new dimension and realism to painting. These works had a profound influence on later artists, including Michelangelo and Raphael.
2 - The frescoes are a result of the collaboration between Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi. While Masolino initiated the project with a softer, more Gothic style, Masaccio's contributions introduced a more naturalistic approach. Catalonia, Spain, is home to the medieval village of Siurana, a hidden gem perched on a dramatic limestone cliff overlooking the Siurana Reservoir and the rugged Prades Mountains. Known for its breathtaking views, cobblestone streets, and tragic legends, Siurana was the last Muslim stronghold in Catalonia, falling to Christian forces in the 12th century. Today, it’s a paradise for hikers, rock climbers, and photographers looking to immerse themselves in history and nature.

Medieval village of Siurana

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.

Real Madrid: Santiago Bernabéu

Yves Saint Laurent gifted Jardin Majorelle to Marrakech, the city that adopted him and his partner in the 60s. They bought an electric-blue villa and its garden, preserved the vision of its original owner (landscape painter Jacques Majorelle), and opened it to the public. 

What makes this feel like a psychedelic mirage in the desert?

Hot pink bougainvillea bursting from terracotta planters. Architectural cacti in lemon-yellow planters. Bamboos growing against cobalt-blue walls. Colorful birds flitting through palm trees. Saint Laurent’s gorgeous collection of Moroccan art, that I totally covet. 

It also has a museum that features jewelry in a setting that our guide Khadija keeps referring to as “a dream”. A dark room with a star-spangled ceiling and low voltage spotlights shining on stunning jewelry sets.

Khadija’s right. Please let all my dreams be like this place.

Australia

Kakadu National Park is half the size of Switzerland and a real adventure. If you rent a car, you could drive along the road for weeks, camping in different places and experiencing nature in a way you can't anywhere else.

After leaving Darwin in a rented 4x4 jeep, we made the long drive to Kakadu National Park. Take plenty of drinks and snacks with you, as there aren't many stops on the road. Along the way, we visited several refreshing waterholes and waterfalls, had an open-air barbecue, and saw many birds, snakes, anthills, and farmland along the way.

At night we mostly stayed at campsites that provided tents, and the beauty of the night is incomparable. You can hear, smell, and see countless species of animals, from alligators swimming in lakes at night to dingoes howling, to weirdly chirping insects.

We hiked to a hidden waterfall and discovered some hundreds-of-years-old wooden paintings done by the ancestors of Australia's indigenous people. A must-see in Australia for sure!
