Join professional photographer Gianmario on an immersive photo journey through one of Sardinia’s most surreal landscapes. Set around Monte Pulchiana, Europe’s largest granite monolith and a designated natural monument, this experience leads you across a terrain shaped by wind, water and time. This is a day trip journey from Guadalajara to the Western Sierra, focused on coffee, artisans, myth, and mountains, guided by an anthropologist, exploring people and place. 

You leave Guadalajara early, tracing the road west into the Western Sierra — scenic landscapes of red earth and pine slopes. Your first stop is Amacueca. Here, farmers show how cherries are hand-picked, pulped, roasted — the scent is warm and nutty. You taste a cup brewed on the spot.

The route continues to Tapalpa, a Pueblo Mágico of whitewashed walls and timber balconies. You wander its plaza and visit selected artisans. 

Later, at the Enigma Valleys, giant stones stand scattered. Alejandro shares local legends — of spirits, giants, storms — that have made this site both sacred and mysterious. You understand why these boulders are more than geology: they’re reminders of endurance.

It’s a full day — mountain air, conversation, cultural heritage, and a sense that Jalisco belongs to those who live its rhythm.

The first stop is Amacueca, a tranquil highland town nestled in Jalisco’s Western Sierra known for its pitayas –(cactus fruit), centuries-old Catholic heritage (the oldest Catholic temple and convent in western Mexico), and emerging coffee culture. Here, faith, agriculture, and artistry have intertwined for generations.

You’ll walk through the cobbled streets to a family-run coffee farm and roastery, where the scent of roasting beans mingles with the mountain air. Here, you explore small-scale coffee plots, learn about hand-picking and roasting, and see how altitude and microclimate influence flavor.  Of course, you’ll sit for a cup brewed fresh from the local roast.



The Western Sierra de Amacueca region produces shade-grown arabica coffee with mild acidity and chocolate/nutty notes. It is one of western Mexico’s most authentic coffee regions, its small farms overshadowed by Jalisco’s more famous agave fields but no less remarkable in craftsmanship. In this stop, you step directly into that continuity — from colonial spirituality to contemporary agricultural artistry.

Your guide, an anthropologist, ties these threads together: how the first missionaries built the convent that still anchors the town; how Catholic rituals merged with indigenous cycles of rain and harvest; and how today’s farmers use traditional shade and hand-roasting techniques to sustain biodiversity and quality.

The route winds toward Tapalpa, a Pueblo Mágico whose name means “land of colors.” Set among pine forests and rolling valleys, Tapalpa is known for its colonial streets lined with whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs, its balconies bright with geraniums, and the scent of wood smoke drifting through cobbled lanes.

Here, you walk the town’s narrow streets with your host, meeting local artisans and craftspeople who work with leather, clay, and woven maguey fiber — materials drawn directly from the surrounding land. Tapalpa was one of the first towns in Mexico to receive Pueblo Mágico status (2002) — an honor recognizing not only its preserved architecture but its living culture.

Crafts in a Pueblo Mágico

The road from Tapalpa climbs gently toward the Valle de los Enigmas, also known as the Valle de las Piedrotas — this is the highlight of the tour. Here, colossal monolithic Giant Stones stand as silent guardians in a vast natural amphitheater, inviting visitors to marvel at their intriguing shapes and legends. Each is the size of a house, weathered into shapes that seem both natural and intentional.

No one knows for certain how these stones arrived here. Geologists suggest ancient volcanic activity — basalt expelled and sculpted by erosion. Locals tell other stories: that the rocks were meteorites, or that giants once played here, leaving the stones as toys abandoned mid-game.

As you walk among the stones, Alejandro shares both science and legend — oral histories passed down through local families, theories from archaeologists, and the meanings that still endure in the stories told today. It’s an arresting final stop — a conversation between land, myth, and time itself.

Portugal

A full-day expedition from Lisbon to Évora and back in the tradition of a “grand tour”. Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, rich in Roman, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture is a living museum that encapsulates over twenty centuries of Portuguese history. The city blossomed into its golden age as the residence of Portuguese kings during the 15th and 16th centuries and is a showcase of portuguese architectural evolution. Here, you can traverse time, from the enigmatic prehistoric cromlech to the imposing Roman Temple, medieval Évora Cathedral, and the contemplative Bones Chapel. The city harmoniously blends its architecture, with low whitewashed houses adorned with azulejos and wrought-iron balconies, set in narrow medieval streets. The Roman Temple, a well-preserved 1st-century structure, offers a window into Évora's ancient Roman past. This temple, often mistakenly associated with the goddess Diana, is a significant symbol of Roman influence in the region. Its Corinthian-style columns and the architectural design reflect the city's historical importance and one of the few archeological remains of that period. Surrounding the Roman Temple there are several Palaces from different periods, a small romantic garden with a great view and several cultural institutions, such Évora Museum, the Public Library, the Enoteca and Eugénio de Almeida Foundation.

The Square of Condes de Vila Flor is a time capsule regarding different historic-artistic periods. In the center of the square, there's one of the iconic images of Évora -  the Roman Temple, from 1st century BCE. Surrounding it, some preserved medieval walls from the old castle area, but also, the Cadaval Palace, the Lóios Palace, the Vimioso Palace and the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation -  former Inquisition Palace.

The Palácio Dom Manuel I, originally a convent transformed also into a royal palace, showcases a blend of Gothic, Manueline, Mudéjar, and Renaissance styles. It's known for its elegant Manueline porch and Mudéjar-style loggia. Today host the Évora interpretive center, exploring the city rich history through distinct chronological periods.

The palace, a significant late medieval and renaissance structure, played a vital role during the 15th-16th century Portuguese Discoveries Age, hosting cultural and political activities, when Évora was one of the Kingdom main city. It's a living testament to the vibrant intellectual life of Évora during its golden age.

Renaissance King Manuel Palace

The Church of Misericórdia founded in early 16th century by the King D. Manuel I, will be rebuilt and enlarged in1554, as we can see today. The church, with a single nave and sober proportions, features a majestic set of baroque decoration, with tiles and gilded carvings from the 17th and 18th centuries, making it one of the most beautiful churches in the city of Évora.

The white church appears austere and simple from the outside, but inside, it's covered in magnificent tile decoration designed by the Lisbon workshop of master António de Oliveira Bernardes, one of the most famous of that time period.  Seven panels of tiles with blue cobalt and white decoration represents the Works of Mercy  and Spiritual Qualities.

The nave has a group of seven baroque paintings by the Eborense painter Francisco Xavier de Castro. On the main altar, we can see one of the largest set of gilded altarpiece in Évora.

Giraldo Square, the heart of Évora, is surrounded by medieval arches, a historic fountain, and 19th-century elite houses. The square's Renaissance white marble fountain, built in 1571, and S. Antão Church symbolizes the once city's richness and political relevance. Giraldo Square has been a focal point for social and cultural activities for centuries, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Évora throughout history, connecting the present to its past.

Praça do Giraldo is an icon of homage to the medieval christian warrior Geraldo Geraldes, the Fearless, who conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167 and became its ruler. The square has architectural references from numerous historical periods: the arcades that adorn it on the side are from the medieval period, the beautiful marble fountain and the Church of Santo Antão, from the 16th century, and the neoclassical and romantic mansions of the Eborense elite are from the 19th century. Nowadays, it's the vibrant center of the city, with its restaurants, cafes, terraces and comercial, religious and cultural activities.

The Évora Cathedral, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles, is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal. It stands as a symbol of the Christian reconquest and showcases the architectural transitions of the time. Featuring a huge gothic cloister and a unique rooftop walk, the cathedral showcases the blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. 

The Medieval Évora Cathedral was built entirely with austere dark granite- including the  Cloister, but will be  altered in different historical periods - from the 12th to the 18th century, resulting in immensely rich and heterogenic colorful decorated interiors.

The Cathedral terrace is the highest point in the city. From there you can see the entire city, whether the historic city within the walls, with all its heritage, or the new city made up of several neighborhoods all around. Furthermore, there is a vast horizon where you can see the extensive plain and some other historical locations.

The Évora Cathedral is one of the oldest and biggest in Portugal, hosting a spectacular Cloister.

The University of Évora was founded in 1559 by Cardinal D. Henrique - last portuguese king of 2nd dinasty, being the second university to be founded in Portugal,  after the University of Coimbra (1537). The university - established by the Jesuits, as the nearby Espírito Santo Church, once positioned Évora as Portugal's second city in terms of intellectual prominence. The university's architecture and the church's design reflect the city's academic, religious and artistic significance during different historical periods.

The spectacular building of the Old University of Évora is based on a quadrangular plan that surrounds a grand cloister, also known as Pátio dos Gerais. In the center there's a fountain, surrounded by colonnaded galleries, with the beautiful facade of the former chapel of the Colégio do Espírito Santo rising in the center. The various class-rooms of the school were covered with beautiful baroque tiles alluding to the subjects taught there – Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics and Fine Arts – forming one of the most important Baroque sets with secular themes found in Portugal. But there's also other decorative themes and techniques, such as paintings, inlaid stones and sculptures around the different rooms.

Chile

Try your hand at making a "lucky" clay pig known as a Chanchito in the intimate studio of a local artist near Valparaíso. No prior experience is necessary and this 1.5-hour crafting experience is perfect for children and adults of all ages. 

Chanchitos are three-legged pigs which are typically made in the village of Pomaire in Chile. This art experience uses a special type of clay which is easy to work with and dries quickly, meaning the finished Chanchito is ready to take away on the day. Over the course of the workshop, you will hear the history of the Chanchito and their significance in Chile. 

You'll also enjoy an inspirational view of the Pacific Ocean from Marcela's private terrace while enjoying soft refreshments and local pastries. If you're lucky, you may even get to sample "pancito amasado" bread baked by Marcela's father, a retired lighthouse keeper.

This fun pottery activity is relaxed and accessible to novice sculptors and potters of all ages. The finished Chanchito is small enough to slip into even the smallest bag and may be kept for yourself or gifted to a loved one back home to bring them luck. While you work, Marcela will explain the history behind these three-legged pigs typically made in Pomaire. She will share further insight on the development of Chilean art and crafts from pre-Columbian times to the modern day as well as mythological stories. While in her studio, you can check out what she is currently working on and hear about her artistic achievements.

Marcela's studio is attached to her home above the Higuerillas fishing hamlet in Concon, a short drive from Viña del Mar or Valparaíso. This area is often skipped by international tourists which means you get to experience a truly local community. To conclude your trip to Concon, Marcela will recommend local seafood restaurants in the "Gastronomic Capital of Chile".

You will meet at Marcela's art studio in the Higuerillas hamlet in Concon, near Valparaíso. The exact location is provided after booking.

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

This is an emotional journey through the Holy Week traditions of Cuglieri, a timeless village in Sardinia. As you join the procession, you'll observe powerful symbols of faith and the heartfelt involvement of the townspeople. A standout feature of Cuglieri's Easter celebration is the liturgical songs performed by the choir "a cuncordu," offering a touching and unforgettable experience that will resonate long after the event.

At the heart of Cuglieri’s Holy Week are traditions that blend raw spirituality with centuries-old rituals. During the solemn Mass, the choir "a cuncordu" performs the Miserere, their voices weaving an ancient polyphonic tapestry of devotion. This distinctive singing style, carried by four male voices (bassu, contra, mesa boghe, and boghe), resonates deeply in the sacred silence, offering unforgettable, evocative moments of connection to a tradition passed down through generations.

The experience reaches its emotional peak during the Procession of the Dead Christ, a solemn parade through the village’s narrow streets. Statues of the deposed Christ and the Madonna Addolorata are carried with reverence, the flicker of candlelight illuminating faces etched with devotion.

Then, a traditional lunch is shared with the Cantori (singers). It’s an immersion into a living tradition that binds faith, culture, and community in a warm and communal atmosphere, with a deep sense of belonging.

Immerse yourself in the enchanting Carnival of Tempio Pausania, or Carrasciali Timpiesu, on Sunday, February 15. The highlight of this vibrant celebration is a grand parade featuring the whimsical, symbolic marriage of Re Giorgio (the king of Carnevale) and Mannena (a beautiful local woman). 

After meeting your local guide, Gianmario Pedroni, you’ll enjoy a typical lunch learning about the Carnival traditions, before joining the parade at 3 PM. Re Giorgio eagerly awaits Mannena, accompanied by the lively Tempio City Band and a dazzling array of allegorical floats.

As the streets come alive with colorful floats from both local and visiting towns, you'll be treated to a unique spectacle of performers embodying famous characters in a humorous and irreverent style. Revel in the colorful costumes and masks that reflect Sardinian heritage.

After honing his skills in England, he specialized in advertising, fashion, and design, working with prominent photographers and brands. This experience invites you to read Herculaneum as a city caught mid-life by the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius. You follow basalt streets, pause at corner fountains, and look into shops where stone counters still hold recessed jars. Wood endured here as charcoal—doors, beams, even furniture outlines—so kitchens, stairways, and upper floors remain readable. Worn thresholds and bakeries with mills and ovens make daily habits visible, while pyroclastic surges and mud sealed what they touched.

You'll trace the ancient shoreline, now inland, including the vaulted boat sheds (known as the fornici), the site’s starkest memory, the place where people sought refuge in a last desperate attempt to escape. Nearby, the Baths show pools, mosaics, changing rooms, and underfloor heating. You'll also discover the House of Neptune and Amphitrite with its mosaic, the College of the Augustales with painted panels, and the House of the Wooden Partition with its sliding screen.

Unlike Pompeii, buried by ash and lapilli, Herculaneum was overwhelmed by pyroclastic flows—a surge of gas, ash, and steam that settled meters deep—so wood, upper floors, and everyday objects were sealed in place. Michele links these clues to the present, weaving echoes into today’s remains. You leave with scenes you can picture and a city that lingers after you step outside.
