An Andalusian Fairytale

A day inside Seville's Feria de Abril (Apr 12–18, 2027) — its dance, dress, carriages — and a rare invitation into the private casetas where the Feria is actually lived. At your accommodation, a bailaora teaches you the first copla of sevillanas, the paired dance sung and clapped in every caseta, while stylists prepare hair and makeup in the fashion the day demands: bun with flower, mantón on the shoulder. A horse-drawn carriage with liveried coachmen then collects you, crosses the river, and stops first at a private caseta where a Sevillano host receives you for an Andalusian lunch — pescaíto frito, jamón ibérico, tortilla. Afterwards, you join the Paseo de Caballos in your carriage — the procession of some 1,400 carriages and riders moving along the numbered streets — and for 90 minutes you are inside the Feria's most photographed spectacle. Then you stop at a caseta or two for what the evening becomes: sevillanas danced to guitars and palmas, in the company of the host's friends.

Seville's storied Feria, founded 1847, is Andalusia's largest annual celebration — 1,050 casetas across 15 streets, rebuilt each year. For a week, it fills with 1,400 carriages, mounted riders, and every color of traje de flamenca. But most of what brings the communal spirit to the Feria happens inside private casetas. Fewer than twenty casetas are public. The rest belong to families, social clubs, businesses and hermandades, with memberships held for generations. The lunches, the dancing, the social life — all happen inside spaces you can only reach if you are invited. Reyes says: "Value for being invited into a caseta is not measured in money, but in generosity — in the time and the attention they offer, and the privilege of being welcomed into their celebration as one of their own." What Reyes has built is one of the rare paths to the full color and communal joy of Feria de Abril — and one where the people who welcome you are honored partners. The exchange runs both ways.

Reyes García is a cultural curator whose festival experiences share one principle: the parts of Andalusian celebrations worth traveling for are entered by invitation, through relationships built patiently over years. For the Feria, she works with a Sevillano host who lives in the city and moves in its social world. Your host accompanies you through the day, opens doors at the private casetas, translates language and custom where needed, and ensures you are received as a personal guest wherever you go. The bailaora and stylist are both working professionals in Seville. Reyes will introduce your hosts closer to the date. Dress. Ladies wear a full-length traje de flamenca, solid or polka dot; if you don't have one, Reyes can advise on sourcing (dresses are made to measure). Gentlemen wear a suit and tie; many men carry the tie and put it on only when entering a caseta. Shoes. Comfortable — you'll be on your feet for hours. Space at your accommodation. The sevillanas class and styling both happen at your hotel or apartment. The styling needs light and a chair; the dance class, a few square meters of space.
